Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Modern Times (1936 movie)

Answer: Smile

"Smile" was written in 1936 by Charlie Chaplin as the theme song for the film "Modern Times". Originally an instrumental, lyrics were added in 1954 by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons. A 1954 cover by Nat King Cole rose to Number Ten on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart and to Number Two on the UK Singles Chart.
2. Casablanca (1942 movie)

Answer: As Time Goes By

"As Time Goes By" was originally written in 1931 for the Broadway musical "Everybody's Welcome". Herman Hupfield did double duty, contributing both music and lyrics. In "Casablanca", the character of Sam, played by Dooley Wilson, performs the chorus of the song. Dooley Wilson mimes playing the piano in the film with the piano melody played by pianist Elliot Carpenter.

The song and scene led to the famous non-quote from the film: "Play it again, Sam" by Rick (Humphrey Bogart). He actually says "You played it for her, you can play it for me."
3. High Noon (1952 movie)

Answer: Do Not Forsake Me, O My Darling

Singer and actor Tex Ritter performed "Do Not Forsake Me, O My Darling" also known as "The Ballad of High Noon" as the theme for the movie. Written for the 1952 movie "High Noon", Dimitri Tromkin composed the music and Ned Washington wrote the lyrics.

The song won the 1952 Academy Award for Best Original Song with Tex Ritter performing the song at the Awards ceremony. His recording of the song went to Number Twelve on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
4. Blackboard Jungle (1955 movie)

Answer: Rock Around the Clock

James E. Myers (under the name Jimmy DeKnight) and Max C. Freedman wrote "We're Gonna Rock Around the Clock Tonight" in 1952. Over the years, the title was shortened to its current form. Sonny Dae and his Knights recorded the song in 1954 a few weeks before Bill Haley and his Comets did.

In 1955, the latter version rose to Number One on both the German Singles and UK Singles Charts as well as several US Billboard Charts. The song was featured in "Blackboard Jungle" three times (including over the opening credits), one of the first movies to prominently include rock and roll in its soundtrack.
5. Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961 movie)

Answer: Moon River

"Moon River" was performed in "Breakfast at Tiffany's" by Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) accompanying herself on a guitar. The music was written by Henry Mancini and the lyrics by Johnny Mercer. Covered by many artists over the years, Jerry Butler had a Number Eleven hit on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1961 and Danny Williams had a Number One hit on the UK Singles chart in the same year. Perhaps the song is most associated with Andy Williams, who made it his unofficial theme song.
6. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968 movie)

Answer: Also Sprach Zarathustra

The instrumental piece "Also Sprach Zarathustra" was written by Richard Strauss in 1896. The "tone-poem" (as described by Strauss) was inspired by the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche. Strictly speaking, it is the opening portion, "Sunrise" that is used in "2001: A Space Odyssey" early in the movie. Eumir Deodato's 1974 cover of "Also Sprach Zarathustra" would reach Number Two on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and Number Seven on the UK Singles chart.
7. M*A*S*H (1970 movie)

Answer: Suicide is Painless

The song "Suicide is Painless" would also be the theme song for the television series "M*A*S*H", albeit an instrumental version. In the movie, the song is performed during the "Last Supper" sequence. Johnny Mercer composed the music and Mike Altman, the then 14 year old son of "M*A*S*H" director Robert Altman, wrote the lyrics. Ironically it is believed that over the years Mike Altman made much more in royalties from the song than his father did from directing the movie.
8. Superman: The Movie (1978 movie)

Answer: Can You Read My Mind?

"Can You Read My Mind?" occurs in "Superman: The Movie" when Superman is flying with Lois Lane. Margot Kidder, who played Lois Lane, spoke rather than sang the lyrics. One reason the producers gave for this decision was that they did not want to turn the movie into a musical. John Williams composed the music and Leslie Bricusse wrote the lyrics for the song.

In 1979, singer Maureen McGovern recorded "Can You Read My Mind?", which became a Number Five hit on the US Adult Contemporary chart.
9. Rocky III (1982 movie)

Answer: Eye of the Tiger

The song "Eye of the Tiger" was written by Frankie Sullivan and Jim Peterik. It references a concept that Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) uses when training Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) for his re-match fight with Clubber Lang (Mr. T). Performed by the band Survivor, "Eye of the Tiger" was a Number One hit on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart for six weeks.

The song was first intended to be used for the movie "The Karate Kid", but was later switched to "Rocky III".
10. The Bodyguard (1992 movie)

Answer: I Will Always Love You

Dolly Parton wrote and recorded the original version of "I Will Always Love You", which rose to Number One on the Billboard Hot Country chart twice, in 1974 and 1982. Whitney Houston's cover of the song for her movie "The Bodyguard" also reached Number One, albeit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Houston's cover of the song sold over 20 million copies worldwide as a single.

The soundtrack to "The Bodyguard" (which featured this song and four others by Whitney Houston) sold over 45 million copies worldwide.
