Answer: Birchard

Born in Delaware, Ohio, Hayes' father passed away just before his birth. Birchard was his mother's maiden surname.
2. Rutherford Hayes' wife's first name was Lucy. What was her famous nickname?

Answer: Lemonade Lucy

The Hayeses were staunch supporters of temperance. Rutherford banned alcoholic beverages from the White House. Only one exception was ever made during Hayes' administration and that was when wine was served in 1877 to the Grand Duke of Russia, Alexei Alexandrovich.

Although Mrs. Hayes had the sobriquet of "Lemonade Lucy" put upon her, it was never used to refer to her during her lifetime.

She also won two Academy Awards - for "Airport" (1970) and "The Sin of Madelon Claudet"(1931). Helen Hayes and her husband Charles MacArthur adopted his illegitimate son, James. As a child star, James MacArthur appeared in several movies for the Disney Studios. Despite his western image, George Francis Hayes was born in a hotel owned by his father near Wellsville, New York. He was the third of seven children and didn't even know how to ride a horse until he was in this forties and had to learn for an acting role.

He played a character named "Windy" when working with William Boyd (Hopalong Cassidy). When he left Boyd's employ over a salary dispute, he was legally forbidden to use the name "Windy", so he started using "Gabby" as a nickname. He passed away in 1969 from cardiovascular disease at age 83.
