Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start of with an easy one. What was little Victoria's title when she was born in 1819?

Answer: Princess of Kent

Victoria's father was Edward Augustus, Duke of Kent, fourth son of George III. Unfortunatley he died several months after Victoria's birth, so she never knew him. Victoria remained Princess of Kent until her accession.
2. Who was Victoria's mother?

Answer: Mary Louise Victoria of Saxe-Coburg

Bit of a trick, that one. Mary Louise was always known as Victoria. She was the widow of the Duke of Leiningen when she married Duke Edward, and she was the haughty, overbearing type. During William IV's reign, she demanded that, as mother of the heiress to the throne, she should be treated as the "Dowager Princess of Wales", and given an income befitting that status.

The King, who detested her, did not grant her wish.
3. Who were Victoria's half-siblings, the children of her mother and the Duke of Leiningen?

Answer: Charles and Feodore

Victoria was very close to Feodore, 12 years her senior. Feodore later married the Count of Hohenlohe-Langeburg and Victoria rarely saw her again.
4. When Victoria first met Prince Albert she was more taken with his brother. What was his name?

Answer: Ernest

Victoria and Albert were both sixteen at this time. When they met again they were a little older and Victoria barely noticed Ernest - she had eyes only for Albert!
5. Which of these names was NOT given to any of Queen Victoria's sons?

Answer: George

George was a traditional Hanoverian name, and Victoria did not want to associate that "immoral" dynasty with her own brood. Alfred was Duke of Edinburgh and became Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Albert('Bertie') was Prince of Wales and bacame Edward VII on his accession, Arthur was Duke of Connaught and lived to be 92, a record among male royals.

The other son was Leopold, a haemophiliac who died in his thirties. He was Duke of Albany.
6. Which of these was not one of Victoria's daughters?

Answer: Charlotte

Victoria ('Vicky') was Princess Royal and later German Empress. She is known to history as 'the Empress Frederick' after her husband. (A liberal, he reigned for one hundred days in 1888, after the death of Kaiser Wilhelm I. However, he died of cancer soon afterwards and was succeeded by the unstable Wilhelm II). Alice became Grand Duchess of Hesse-Darmstadt and Helena became Princess of Schleswig-Holstein.

The other daughters were Louise (later Duchess of Argyll) and Beatrice (Princess Henry of Battenberg.).
7. Many men served Victoria as prime minister. Which of these was not one of them?

Answer: Lord Bute

Bute served under George III, from 1761-63, towards the end of the Seven Years' War. Victoria was famously "unconstitutional" in her comments about her prime ministers. She once said, 'After an evening sitting next to Mr Gladstone, I would think he is the cleverest man in England. After an evening sitting next to Mr Disraeli, I would think I was the cleverest woman in England.' (!)
8. When Victoria died she had forty-odd grandchildren. The birth of so many was eventually greeted by the queen with boredom. The arrival of which grandchild was greeted with a short, brusque note in her diary?

Answer: Princess Victoria of Wales

Little Toria, as she was called, was Victoria's fourteenth granddaughter. No wonder the queen got a bit bored.
9. Queen Victoria and her family had many nicknames for each other. Whom did the call 'Liko'?

Answer: Prince Henry of Battenberg, Beatrice's husband

The origin of this name is not known. Alexandra was known as 'Alix', Helena as 'Lenchen', Alfred as 'Affie', Beatrice as 'Baby', Alfred's daughter Marie as 'Missy', Alice's daugters Elizabeth and Alexandra as 'Ella' and 'Alicky' respectively, the Duchess of Connaught as 'Looischen' ('Luischen'), the Prince of Wales' daughter Louise as 'Lulu' and many more besides!
10. Three of Victoria's nine children predeceased her. Who were they?

Answer: Alice, Leopold and Alfred

Alice died of diptheria aged 35 in 1878. Leopold was a haemophiliac and died after a haemorrage. Alfred died in 1900. Vicky died in 1901, six months after her mother, Edward VII n 1910, aged 69, Helena in 1923 aged 77, Arthur in 1942 aged 92, Louise in 1939 aged 91 and Beatrice in 1944 aged 87.
