Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. An Emergency Medical Technician and a paramedic are the same.

Answer: False

An EMT can only give basic life support. This includes bandaging, splinting, CPR, oxygen administration, and other basic skills.
A paramedic can put breathing tubes in, administer medications, monitor and treat heart abnormalities.
2. An ambulance arrives at a call. What is an aide's first priority?

Answer: Scene safety

The first step when arriving on any scene is scene safety. The lead on an ambulance is responsible for the crew, therefore all dangers on the scene must be surveyed and assessed. Panic is obviously a joke. I hope that no trained professional ever panics.
3. What is the definition of 'anatomy'?

Answer: Study of body structures

All Emergency Medical Technicians must have a basic knowledge of anatomy. For example, if an ambulance arrives on the scene with a patient who is complaining of lower right abdominal pain the EMT must know what organs are involved in that area. The appendix is located in the lower right lower abdominal quadrant. Therefore one possibility could be appendicitis (inflammation of the appendix).
4. A fire truck and a fire engine are the same.

Answer: False

A fire engine is a piece of equipment that carries hoses and ladders. This enables personnel to fight a fire. A fire truck is basically a rolling tool box. It has rescue equipment, tools and ladders to assist in firefighting, and rescue duties.
The biggest difference in these two pieces of equipment is a ladder truck, it has a large extendable ladder. It also has many different sizes of ladders, not able to be carried on a fire engine.
5. There is a national organization which can help a person learn first aid. What is that organization?

Answer: American Red Cross

The American Red Cross teaches first aid to anyone who wishes to learn it.
As funny as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration response seems, it is the national organization that develops and administers first responder, EMT, and paramedic courses.
6. What does the term medial mean?

Answer: toward the middle

Medial is toward the middle
Lateral is towards the side
Caudal: Towards the feet
Cranial: towards the head
The reason EMTs need to know this is because when calling the hospital the staff need an accurate description of the location of the injury.
7. Do infants and children breathe at the same rate?

Answer: No

Infants breathe at an average of 44 breaths per minutes (bpm).
Preschool children average 20-30 bpm and adults average 12-20 bpm per minute.
This is very important for an EMT to know, because it assists us with assessment of the child.
8. If an unqualified person arrives first on the scene of an auto accident, and there is an unconscious victim, what is the first thing that person should do?

Answer: Telephone Emergency Services

If you ever come up to the scene of an accident, never move the victim. Even in a "minor" accident there can be significant neck, and/or spinal trauma. Calling Emergency Services (911 in the USA, 000 in Australia etc) is the correct answer. When an ambulance arrives on the scene a full spinal immobilization can be done.
9. What should you do if you witness a seizure?

Answer: Clear any dangers out of the way

If someone is having a seizure do not (contrary to popular belief) ever place anything in the persons mouth. There actually is a slim chance of a person swallowing their tongue. If the patient has had seizures before, after they stop seizing, comfort the patient, loosen any tight clothing, and roll into the coma position. If the patient has never had a seizure call 911. If the patient has had seizures before, there is no need to call an ambulance unless it lasts more than five minutes.
10. What is "the golden hour"?

Answer: The first 60 minutes after the occurrence of major multi-system trauma.

The more descriptive definition is:
If a patient can reach a trauma center within sixty minutes, they have a much better chance of survival. During the Korea, and Vietnam Wars, helicopter transports increased the life expectancy by 50% than that of soldiers in World War II.
