Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To which future king was Beau Brummel referring when he asked someone, "Who is your fat friend"?

Answer: King George IV

As Prince Regent, George, Prince of Wales, led a hedonistic life style. Although he was undoubtedly intelligent, witty and charming he was more interested in drink, food and women than politics. His gluttony was such that by 1824 his corset was measured at a 50 inch waist line.

He was constantly in debt because of his expensive tastes: we have only to look at the Brighton Pavilion as an example. He died in 1830 having suffered, in later life, from gout, arteriosclerosis and cataracts, all brought on by his lifestyle.
2. According to legend which King of England died from eating "A surfeit of lampreys"?

Answer: Henry I

Henry I died in 1135 whilst on a visit to Normandy to see his grandchildren. His death is generally accepted to have been due to food poisoning caused by eating too many lampreys, a type of eel, which he was very fond of. His body was transported back to England and he was buried in Reading Abbey, which he had founded some years before.

The Abbey was destroyed during the Reformation and no trace of his grave remains.
3. Which Hollywood actor, famous for his method acting technique, was also noted for his bizarre eating habits?

Answer: Marlon Brando

In the latter half of his life Marlon Brando put on a huge amount of weight. He would eat, at one sitting, six hot dogs, or a pound of bacon stuffed into an entire loaf of bread, or five gallons of ice cream. The costume staff for "Mutiny On The Bounty" claimed he split the seat of 52 separate pairs of pants during filming due to his weight gains, and that they had to resort to sewing elasticated fabric into his costumes to ensure that they still fitted him after lunch.
4. Which American president died of gastroenteritis after eating too many cherries with too much iced milk?

Answer: Zachary Taylor

Only 16 months after his election Zachary Taylor attended a 4th July celebration where he ate iced milk and cherries, as well as several other snacks. He fell ill that night and died five days later. For some time theories of assassination by poison abounded, and in 1991 he was exhumed and samples were taken. No trace of poison was found, and it was concluded that on a hot day he ate too many cool snacks of iced milk and cherries, which caused acute gastroenteritis.
5. Which author, who gave us the memorable character Becky Sharp, was a notorious glutton?

Answer: William Thackeray

Today William Thackeray's best known work is "Vanity Fair", but he was ranked second only to Dickens in popularity in much of the Victorian era. In the 1850s he began to suffer from ill health, and worsened matters by continually overeating and by drinking too much.

He was addicted to spicy peppers, which certainly did nothing to improve the state of his digestive system. He died from a stroke, almost certainly caused by his eating habits, at the age of 52.
6. Which operatic tenor was affectionately known as "Fat Lucy"?

Answer: Luciano Pavarotti

Pavarotti shot to stardom outside of the opera circuit when his recording of "Nessun Dorma" was used by BBC TV as the theme song for the 1990 World Cup. This was followed by the first, and probably best, Three Tenors Concert in Rome just before the World Cup final, which was watched by millions worldwide.

In his later years, with his weight at around 175kg. he sometimes had to sit to perform. His weight led to knee and hip operations as well as affecting his voice. He died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 71.
7. There is a possibility that Mozart died because he ate too many what?

Answer: Undercooked pork chops

Thanks to the film "Amadeus", most people think that Mozart was murdered by his rival, Salieri. There is however absolutely no evidence at all that Mozart was murdered. A letter that Mozart wrote shortly before his death which contained a reference to eating a lot of chops was compared, by Dr J.Hirschmann, to his symptoms and he concluded Mozart died from trichinosis, a disease caused by worms found in undercooked pork.

This is, however, only one of many theories as to the cause of his death, none of which can ever be disproved as, seven years after his death, his pauper's grave was dug up for reuse and his bones were scattered. (He died a pauper and was buried in a large communual grave).
8. When taking part in "Celebrity Fit Club" in 2006, which TV presenter revealed she had been fitted with a gastric band?

Answer: Anne Diamond

Anne Diamond appeared in series four of "Celebrity Fit Club". She started the programme some 61 pounds overweight and with high blood pressure. She failed to hit it off with one of the soldiers carrying out the training and stormed out of a training session in week four. The following week she revealed she had had a gastric band fitted. This not only attracted a lot of press attention, but also caused Carol Malone to brand her a cheat. She subsequently left the show before the end of the series.

Vanessa Feltz had a band of her own fitted in 2010.
9. Who is known to Swedish schoolchildren as "the king who ate himself to death"?

Answer: Adolf Frederick

Adolf Frederick was King of Sweden from 1751-1771. On the night of his death he is reported to have eaten lobster, caviar, kippers, sauerkraut and drunk champagne, followed by fourteen servings of his favourite desert, semla in hot milk. Semla is a traditional Scandinavian pastry. He died of digestive problems later that night.
10. Elvis Presley's favourite snack was a fried sandwich of bananas and ____?

Answer: Peanut butter

To make this properly you need two slices of lightly toasted white bread. Spread peanut butter on one slice, mashed ripe banana on the other, then deep fry the sandwich in butter until golden brown. This artery clogging snack comes in at around 30g of fat, and undoubtedly contributed to his weight gain and eventual demise every bit as much as the prescription drugs.

Recipe taken from "Are You Hungry Tonight" the cookbook of Elvis Presley's favourite foods.
