Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was unusual about Lady Katherine Grey and Lady Mary Grey's marriages?

Answer: Declared invalid

1) Katherine was married to Henry Lord Herbert, heir to The Earl of Pembroke in a dual ceremony with her sister Jane and Guilford Dudley. The plan was should John Dudley Duke of Northumberland's coup fail they'd quickly have her marriage annulled (which it was) to show their loyalty.

The planned coup was for Northumberland to exclude the dying King Edward VI's half-sisters Mary and Elizabeth and place Jane on the throne. Her second marriage to Edward Seymour Earl of Hertford took place without the permission of Queen Elizabeth I. Edward was off in Europe when Queen Elizabeth learned of the secret marriage of her cousin.

While he was gone Katherine lost the written proof of the wedding and the only witness had died leaving Katherine with no proof of her marriage.

After she confessed her marriage and pregnancy to her brother-in-law Robert Dudley who then told the Queen she was quickly imprisoned (along with a recalled Edward) and the marriage declared invalid. A sympathetic jailer of The Tower of London allowed the jailed couple to meet and therefore a second son was born. 2.) Mary Grey married Sir Thomas Keyes without the Queen's permission but she took care to have multiple witnesses.

But that didn't help as Queen Elizabeth I confined Mary to house arrest while Keyes was sent to Fleet Prison. They never had children nor saw each other again.
