Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who in Scripture said (KJV text): "Naked I came out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord."?

Answer: Job

These powerful words were said by Job during the first assault of Satan upon him (Job 1:21). At first, Job proved to have great faith and a strong foundation of trust in God. Soon, however, as Job's suffering continued, he started to complain to his friends and doubt God's kindness. By the end of this ancient book of the Bible, Job's commitment to God was restored.

I love the powerful truth that this verse expresses - Job says we enter and leave this world with nothing, and all is dependent on God.

2. "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." In what book of the NIV Bible can this verse be found?

Answer: Romans

The verse can be found in Romans 8:28. This is one of my favorite Bible verses because, according to my Christian belief, this verse means that even if you're going through a tough time or you're in a questionable situation, God will make it work to your good. This verse can really bring you hope when you're in situations like that.

3. "The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, Because the Lord has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And the opening of the prison to those who are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord." In what two places in the Bible will we find these memorable words? (NKJV text used)

Answer: Isaiah 61:1-2 and Luke 4:18-19

This text appears first in Isaiah 61, in the opening verses interpreted as offering the promise of God's salvation. They are quoted by Jesus, as recorded in Luke, when he reads in the synagogue of Nazareth, and the core of Jesus' sermon which follows is summed up in Luke 4:21, when Jesus says, "Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."

4. Using the KJV of the Bible, 1 Corinthians 2:9 reads, "But as it is written. Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him." Who is the Apostle Paul quoting in this verse?

Answer: Isaiah

Paul says, "As it is written" and he is quoting from Isaiah 64:4. What a wonderful promise to look forward to and one that is worth striving for, and yet so easy, for all Paul says one has to do is to love God and keep his commandments. Even in the face of repeated failures, the apostle John wrote, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). What could be easier than that?

5. In Luke 15:7, in the NIV Bible, Jesus makes the statement, "I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent." In what parable does this verse appear?

Answer: Parable of the Lost Sheep

The correct answer is that the verse appears at the conclusion of the Parable of the Lost Sheep. In the parable, Jesus tells of a man who has 100 sheep and loses one of them. Although he still has 99 sheep, the man makes a point of going out to find the missing one and when he finds it, he rejoices with his friends and neighbors. Jesus, in the parable, is saying there is more rejoicing in heaven over the one person who repents (the lost sheep that is found) than over 99 righteous people (the sheep that are safe and sound).

6. In the Gospel of John 11:25-26 (King James Version) Jesus said: "I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live. And whosoever liveth and believeth in me, shall never die. Believest thou this?" This is a very well known and oft quoted scripture, but to whom did Jesus say these well known words?

Answer: Martha at the raising of Lazarus

Jesus spoke these words in response to Martha who was bemoaning the fact that Jesus had arrived too late to save her brother Lazarus. She said he might have lived and been healed had Jesus arrived before he died. However, Jesus delayed his arrival to show also that he also had the power over death itself and that Lazarus would be raised. What a wonderful promise for those who believe!

7. "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me." (KJV) This powerful verse was written by Paul in what Epistle?

Answer: Galatians

The verse is Galatians 2:20.

I love this reading because Paul expresses within it how his total being has been consumed by Jesus. He is so intimate with Jesus that he has suffered on the cross with him; Paul has died and Christ is now the only life in him; and, he writes, his life is now one of absolute faith in his Savior who loved him.

8. "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." (NIV Bible). In which book of the Bible can these verses be found?

Answer: Proverbs

This passage is found in the book of Proverbs and is verses 5 and 6 of chapter 3. These are some of my favourite verses. When I read it, I believe that God knows what is best for me and even though I may not understand everything that happens around me, God is in control.

9. The grace of God is one of the foundations of the Christian faith. One of many key verses relating to grace is this one: "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God." Where would you find this in the Bible? (NKJV text used)

Answer: Ephesians 2

This is Ephesians 2:8; it states that human salvation depends upon God's grace, and the text goes on to say in verse 9, "not of works, lest anyone should boast." The seven verses in Ephesians 2:4-10 contains no less than three well-known texts, and much more! Read it for yourself, and see!

Question by Rimrunner.
10. In Daniel chapter 3, we read an account of a trio of young men, who were peers of Daniel, being tied up and forced into a blazing hot fiery furnace. In verse 25, whom did King Nebuchadnezzar say that he saw walking around with the three suddenly loosed men that had been thrown into the inferno? (KJV text)

Answer: The Son of God

Verse 25 begins with the king answering his advisors (counsellors) after they confirmed that only three men had been thrown into the furnace -
"He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God."

Before this, in verse 22, we see that the men who threw Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego into the fire were themselves consumed by the blast of heat and died immediately. Remarkably, the intended victims survived IN the fiery furnace.

While Christians believe that Jesus is the Son of God, it is noteworthy that, hundreds of years before Christ's birth, this pagan king recognized the likeness of the Son of God by sight.

11. In Luke 12:15, Jesus speaks: 'And he said to them, "Take heed, and beware of all covetousness; for a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his ___________."' (Revised Standard Version used.) What is the missing word?

Answer: possessions

Whatever your personal religion may be (unless, perhaps, it is materialism!) I suggest that in the world we live in today, these are wise words. This verse argues that there is such a thing as 'sufficient', beyond which we don't need more, and should not want more.

Question by Rimrunner.
12. Which Old Testament man said these words, quoted from the KJV Bible? "If I be bereaved of my children, I am bereaved."

Answer: Jacob

Jacob sent his sons to Egypt to buy grain, but he kept his youngest son from going with them. He had already lost his favorite son Joseph and he had had a lot of trouble with his other sons. He decided to let the younger son Benjamin go to Egypt the second time round, but he was not too convinced for one other brother had been kept in jail in Egypt on their first journey. Jacob said these words to his sons, "And God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may send away your other brother, and Benjamin. If I be bereaved of my children, I am bereaved." Genesis 43:14 (KJV)

13. "Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created." (KJV) The above passage expresses the powerful majesty of God in a clear fashion. In what book of the Bible is this said and who says it?

Answer: The 24 Elders in Revelation

This verse takes place in Revelation 4:11; just prior, the elders throw themselves down on the ground before the throne and cast their crowns to the ground so to fully worship God.

This verse is one of my favorites due to its image of power, as men of great strength throw themselves down before the Lord in worship.

Question by star_gazer.
14. In the RSV Bible, 2 Corinthians 5:17 reads, "Therefore, if any one is in Christ, he is a new _____________; the old has passed away, behold, the new has come." What is the missing word?

Answer: creation

Whatever translation you prefer, the meaning is the same: whoever is in Jesus Christ, is created again, brand new. See Ephesians chapters 1 and 2 where we are told that God has placed Christians in Christ.

Question by Rimrunner.
15. John 3:16 is probably the best known text in the Bible: "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." But where would you find this quotation? "By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren." (RSV text used)

Answer: 1 John 3:16

I love this verse because it reminds me of what I feel it really means to be a disciple of Jesus.
By 'lay down our lives for the brethren' the verse refers to, yes, being willing to die; but even harder, being willing to live first and even entirely for the benefit of one's brothers and sisters in Christ rather than for oneself.

None of the incorrect answers exist: Jude and Philemon only have one chapter, and Titus ends with Titus 3:15.
