Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the proper term for the genetic abnormality seen in this photo of a child's foot?

Answer: Oligodactyly

Oligodactyly usually runs in families and affects both the hands and feet. It is sometimes called "lobster claw" hands and/or feet. The proper name comes from Greek and means having fewer than five fingers or toes on your hands or feet. This disorder is very rare and is caused by a genetic predisposition.

The opposite disorder is polydactyly, which is when the person has more than five fingers or toes on their hands/feet, and is also more common. The other three options deal with cranial deformities.
2. What is the extremely deadly disease that caused the gangrene on this patients hand?

Answer: Bubonic Plague

When you catch Bubonic plague you get a sudden onset of chills, headache, fever, lethargy and swollen lymph nodes called buboes. This terrible disease is usually caused by the bite of an infected flea and is extremely contagious. As the disease progresses gangrene sets in killing the fingers and toes.

In the past, survivors of Bubonic plague were very rare. Now, as soon as the disorder is suspected, antibiotic treatments are started. The earlier the treatment is started the higher the chances of survival are.
3. What is the name for the disorder, often found in Africa, that causes the swollen belly in children who are starving to death?

Answer: Kwashiorkor

Kwashiorkor is also called "Edematous Malnutrition" because of its association with edema or fluid retention. It is commonly seen in areas of famine and is caused by a lack of protein in the diet. Sufferers usually appear emaciated everywhere except their feet, hands, and belly which swell with fluid.

This is a disorder which can be remedied with a proper diet, but without treatment the sufferer will usually die.
4. In which of these places would you be most likely to see a case of Anthrax?

Answer: Rural farming areas

Anthrax is a deadly bacterial disease that is usually found in agricultural regions of Central and South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. Anthrax more commonly affects domestic animals but can also affect humans. This is caused when humans drink water or eat food that is contaminated with Anthrax spores.

The first symptoms are sores on the face, hands and arms. This is followed by fever, shortness of breath, nausea, drenching sweat, and bloody diarrhea. Always use care when dealing with a sick animal.
5. What is the common term for the disorder seen in this photo?

Answer: Elephantiasis

The word elephantiasis is an accurate term describing the enlargement of the body, usually arms, legs, and genitals. It is the result of a round worm infection which affects the lymph nodes of the human body. It causes the body to be unable to rid itself of extra liquids which it stores causing lymphedema or swelling.

The disorder is disfiguring and disabling and is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that is carrying the worm larva in its mouth. This is a disorder that is usually seen in hot, humid areas of the planet.
6. What is the more common name for this disorder, which is also known as Hansen's Disease?

Answer: Leprosy

This is early stage leprosy. If it is not treated, the patient will get granulomas of the skin, respiratory track, eyes, and nerves. Leprosy can take over 25 years to kill the sufferer. In the 1980s, there were over five million people with this disorder, but it is curable, and by 2012 that number had dropped to under 200,000. Over half of these cases are in India. Treatment for this disorder lasts about one year and within the first month of treatment the patient is no longer a danger to others.
7. What is the name of the syndrome in which the main chest muscle, known as a pectoralis major, is absent?

Answer: Poland syndrome

Poland syndrome is a congenital malformation affecting the chest muscle and the hand on one side only of the body. This syndrome affects both males and females. The cause of this syndrome was not known at the beginning of the 21st century. The main chest muscle is absent on one side and the fingers of the hand on that side are webbed.

In girls, the breast on the affected side may be absent completely and reconstructive surgery may be used. This image is the Polish coat of arms.
8. What is the proper term for these soft, non-cancerous growths caused by long-standing syphilis?

Answer: Gumma

Many folks are unaware of the affects of long-standing syphilis. This image shows a patient with gummas on their neck and foot from advanced stage syphilis. Syphilis damages the brain, nerves, eyes, heart, blood vessels, liver, bones and joints. Today, syphilis is easily cured with an antibiotic but for centuries it was a death sentence with a long, slow, suffering death.
9. This poor patient is suffering from Rocky mountain spotted fever which he caught from which of the following options?

Answer: A tick bit him

This is Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever which is caused by a bite from a Dermacentor tick. They are found all over most of North America and a bite from this tick can kill you. The first signs are fever, headache, and muscle pain. The nasty rash comes later but makes it harder to diagnose the patient because these symptoms can suggest a huge number of disorders.
10. This is an x-ray of a child's hands after having been bitten by a king cobra and surviving.

Answer: False

As hard as it might be to believe, these are x-rays of an elderly Chinese woman who had undergone the act of Chinese foot binding. She was unable to walk after having this procedure done as a child. The feet were broken in half and then bound tightly with rags.

It was considered a sign of wealth and prestige to have to be carried everywhere. This is not a disease or disorder but is a human caused disability.
