Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Bandura's bobo doll experiment, in which circumstance did he find that the aggressive behaviour was more likely to be imitated?

Answer: When the model and participant were of the same sex

Bandura conducted an experiment into aggression by letting a child watch an adult behave aggressively towards a bobo doll. He then recorded how many children imitated the behaviour if the adult was of the same or opposite gender. The aggressive was more likely to be repeated if the model was the same sex as the child because then the model would be easier to relate to.
2. Who thought that an attachment had to be formed within the critical period (first couple of months) otherwise it would be too late for any bond to form?

Answer: Bowlby

Bowlby based this on his research on 44 male juvenile thieves. Out of these 44, over half of them had been separated from their mothers during the critical period. However, there is one major flaw in his research: he only observed males so it can not be generalised to females aswell.
3. What does SLT stand for in psychology terms?

Answer: Social Learning Theory

The key stages of SLT are:
Observation- A model is observed doing a certain behaviour. This behaviour is more likely to be imitated if the model is of the same sex or is powerful.
Imitation- the behaviour is imitated.
Reinforcement- if the behaviour is reinforced by giving them a reward then the behaviour is likely to be repeated.
4. Who didn't conduct an experiment into obedience and/or conformity?

Answer: Garfinkel

Garfinkel did a field experiment looking at the effects of invading personal space. He did this by asking some students to bring their faces close to the face of an acquaintance whilst talking to them. He observed the reactions and also interviewed the acquaintance afterwards.
5. Who researched the role of the media in aggression?

Answer: T. Williams

T. Williams did an experiment with three different Canadian villages who received different amounts of television channels. Notel had no channels, Unitel had just one and Multitel had many channels. Firstly, he recorded the number of aggressive acts before any additional channels were received.

Then, a year later, after each village had received more channels he recorded the amount of aggressive acts again. He found that aggressive acts had increased with the addition of new channels.
6. According to Freud, we are born with a "death instinct" which is called:

Answer: Thanatos

WE are all apparently born with two drives: one to live "Eros" and one to die "Thanatos". According to Psychoanalytic Theory it is the conflict between these two drives that causes aggression.
7. Altman and Chemers suggested that there were three main types of territory. What are they?

Answer: primary, secondary and public

Primary territory is an area that you have complete control over, such as a bedroom. Secondary territory is where you have partial control over an area like a table in a restaurant. The third and final territory, public, is an area where you have no control such as a pavement or park bench.
8. In Ainsworth's "strange situations" study she found that 70% of the one-year-olds had which type of attachment?

Answer: securely attached

In her study she observed the behaviour of children when their mothers and strangers enter and leave a room. She found that 70% were securely attached meaning that they were happy when the mother was present, distressed by her absence and the stranger provided little comfort. 15% were found to have an insecure anxious avoidant attachment and the remaining 15% were insecure anxious resistant.
9. What is a disadvantage of a laboratory experiment?

Answer: Not ecologically valid

Laboratory experiments wouldn't be ecologically valid meaning it is not in a natural setting so couldn't be used to explain events in real life.
10. According to Hall there are four different personal space zones. Three of which are intimate, personal and public. But what is the fourth?

Answer: social zone

Personal space differs in size depending on the situation. Below are the four main personal space zones and their distances.
Intimate zone- 0-0.5m - used for a close relationship.
Personal zone- 0.5m-1.5m - maintained by close friends and enables conversation to take place.
Social zone- 1.5-4m - this is for formal situations such as to do with business.
Public- over 4m - General distance between strangers.
