Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This season in the 1990s was shortened by a player strike and ended up with no World Series played.

Answer: 1994

August 12, 1994, was a dark day in baseball history with finding the season coming to an end after only 115 games. It was the second time since professional baseball began in 1871 that players, fans, and owners were all let down with a shortened season. It was also the second time in history that there would be no World Series, the first being in 1904.
2. As absurd as it may sound, this 1990 American League Oakland Athletic won the 1990 National League batting title.

Answer: Willie McGee

McGee was in this ninth season as a St. Louis Cardinal in 1990. After playing in 150 games, the Cardinals traded him to the Athletics in August in a multi-player trade. Having enough at-bats to qualify for the NL title, Willie won his second NL batting title with the first coming in 1985. He won his 1990 NL crown over Eddie Murray of the Dodgers.
3. The 1996 season witnessed the first-ever Major League game being played in Mexico with the San Diego Padres and this team.

Answer: Mets

It was the first game in history to be played outside the U.S. or Canada. On August 16 at Monterrey Stadium in Mexico, the Padres were the designated home team. The Padres won the high scoring game 15-10 with Fernando Valenzuela taking the win.
4. This team was represented with six Cy Young Awards in the decade.

Answer: Braves

The Braves went to five World Series in the decade but lost four of them. They shined from the mound with many celebrity arms. Tom Glavine won the Cy Young in 1991 followed by Greg Maddux in 1993, 1994, and 1995. John Smoltz had his way in 1996, then Glavine again in 1998.

The Braves also won the most games in the league during the decade with 925, amazingly averaging over 90 wins per season even with the strike-shortened 1994 season.
5. This team scored the most runs in a single World Series game during the 1990s.

Answer: Blue Jays

Game three of the 1993 series against the Phillies was a slugfest. Toronto scored 15 runs on 18 hits to Philadelphia's 14 runs on 14 hits. The Marlins also scored 14 runs in game three against the Indians in 1997. The Braves scored 14 in game five of the 1991 series against the Twins.
6. This slugger was the first in baseball history to hit 50+ home runs in four consecutive seasons.

Answer: Mark McGwire

Mark hit 52 with the Athletics in 1996. He split the 1997 season with the Athletics and the Cardinals banging out a total of 58. The 1998 season saw him break Roger Maris' single-season record with 70, then topped the streak off in 1999 with 65. McGwire hit 583 home runs over his 16 seasons.
7. There were three World Series skunks in the 1990s. Those losing teams were the Braves, Padres, and this team.

Answer: Athletics

The Athletics began their decade off well by winning the American League pennant in 1990. They met the Cincinnati Reds but were blanked four games to none. Oakland received a taste of their own medicine after blanking the Giants in the 1989 'Earthquake World Series' four games to none.
8. This player was the first shortstop in 52 years to win a batting title, when he won that title in the 1990s.

Answer: Alex Rodriguez

A-Rod was in his third season of Major League Baseball in 1996 as a Seattle Mariner. He batted .358 in the season to take the crown over Frank Thomas of the White Sox and his .349 average. The last shortstop before Rodriguez to win a batting title was Lou Boudreau of the Indians in 1944 when he took the crown with his .327 average.
9. Baseball lost Hall of Fame great Mickey Mantle in this year.

Answer: 1995

The 'Commerce Comet' played his entire 18-season career with the Yankees from 1951-1968. Mickey batted for the Triple Crown in 1956, being the first switch-hitter in history to do it. He also won the 1956 AL MVP, then two more in 1957 and 1962. Mantle was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1974, then died in Dallas, Texas on August 13, 1995.
10. This player had the highest season batting average of the 1990s.

Answer: Tony Gywnn

Tony was a career San Diego Padre. He gave the .400-milestone a good shot in 1994 when he batted .394 in the season. It was the Padres' only highlight for the season as they finished in last place in the NL West Division. Gwynn won eight batting titles in his career and retired in 2001. He died in 2014 at the age of 54.
