Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which National League pitcher won the 2007 Cy Young award?

Answer: Jake Peavy

Peavy went 19-6 for the Padres in his sixth season. Jake also threw a pitching Triple Crown. This was the second consecutive season that baseball saw a Triple Crown, with Johan Santana of the Twins throwing one in 2006. In the American League in 2007, C.C. Sabathia of the Indians won that league's Cy Young award.
2. Sparky Anderson was the first manager in history to win two Manager of the Year awards. With which team did he win them?

Answer: Detroit Tigers

Anderson won the second AL award in 1984 (the official BBWAA awards began in 1983). He led the Tigers to a World Series title over the Padres. 1987 brought Sparky his second award with the Tigers. They lost the ALCS to the Twins. As a player, Anderson played for one season only in 1952, as a Philadelphia Phillies second baseman.
3. The World Series MVP award began in 1955. Who was the first player to win this award?

Answer: Johnny Podres

The 1955 series pitted the Brooklyn Dodgers against the almighty Yankees. After winning five straight from 1949-1953, then missing the 1954 series, the Yankees were out to prove themselves again. The Dodgers won the series four games to three. After the Yankees took the first two games, the Dodgers came back in games three and four.

After Whitey Ford was used in game six, the Yankees came back with Tommy Byrne against Podres in game seven. Johnny shutout the Yankees, and received the inaugural series MVP award.
4. The Gold Glove award first began in 1957, and was given to a player at each position for the most outstanding fielding abilities in the season. Which American League second baseman won the first Gold Glove award?

Answer: Nellie Fox

The others weren't second baseman. Fox, known for his wad of chewing tobacco, played most of his career with the White Sox. He won his first of three Gold Glove awards in 1957. He was also won the American League MVP in 1959. Nellie retired in 1965 after 19 seasons, and died in 1975. Fox was a 1997 Hall of Fame inductee.
5. Who was the first player in history to win two All-Star game MVPs?

Answer: Willie Mays

The All-Star MVP award began in 1962, with Leon Wagner of the Angels and Maury Wills of the Dodgers winning it. These two awards for Mays in 1963 and 1968, were the only All-Star game awards that he won in over 20 appearances in the game. Willie was also a Rookie of the Year in 1951, and season MVP in 1954 and 1965.
6. In 18 seasons from 1979-1996, which NL team had half of all Rookie of the Year award winners?

Answer: Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers and their great farm system produced from 1979-1982; Rick Sutcliffe, Steve Howe, Fernando Valenzuela, and Steve Sax. From 1992-1996, they also had; Eric Karros, Mike Piazza, Raul Mondesi, Hideo Nomo, and Todd Hollandsworth. Of those, only Valenzuela and Sutcliffe won other major awards. Fernando won the Cy Young in 1981 as a rookie, and Sutcliffe won the 1984 Cy Young as a Cub.
7. The great Casey Stengel managed four teams over 22 seasons of baseball, including taking the Yankees to 10 World Series in a 12-year span. How many times did he win the Manager of the Year award in his career?

Answer: 0

The offical BBWAA award did not begin until 1983 ("Sporting News" had been recognising a "Manager of the Year" since 1938). If not, Casey most probably would have gone down in history as the most winningest Manager of the Year award recipient. He began with the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1934-1936.

In 1938, he took the helm of the Boston Braves for six seasons. 1949 saw him at the podium of the Yankees, and the historical streak began until 1960. The Yankees won seven of those 10 World Series, including five consecutive. Still in New York, in 1962 he took the reins of the new expansion team New York Mets for four seasons. Going from the clouds to 20 feet under, the Mets lost over 100 games each season. Stengel was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1966, then died in 1975.
8. Who was the first player in history to win a season MVP award in each league?

Answer: Frank Robinson

Although all MVP winners, the others were all one-team players in their careers. Frank won his first with the Reds in 1961. In 1966, he took almost every award possible with his new Oriole team, winning the MVP, Triple Crown, All-Star MVP, and World Series MVP. An easy hall inductee, they took Robinson along with his 586 home runs in 1982.
9. The Rolaids Relief award is presented to the most outstanding pitcher in a season coming from the bullpen. The award began in 1976. Which pitcher won the award in four of its first six seasons?

Answer: Rollie Fingers

The others were all starting pitchers. Fingers made his own name while pitching for the Oakland Athletics for nine seasons. His first Rolaids award came in his first season with the Padres in 1977. Two more with San Diego came in 1978 and 1980. After the 1980 season, Fingers was traded to the Cardinals. Without ever throwing even a warm-up pitch, he was traded four days later to the Brewers.

This is where Rollie's fourth award came to be with Milwaukee in 1981. He won the MVP and Cy Young award in 1981 also.
10. Who was the first player in history to win three season MVP awards?

Answer: Jimmie Foxx

Playing mostly for the Athletics and Red Sox, Foxx won two awards with Philadelphia in 1932 and 1933, also hitting for the Triple Crown in 1933. His third MVP award came in 1938 while wearing a Red Sox jersey. Berra won three MVPs in the 1950s, Ruth won his only MVP in 1923, and Bonds wasn't born before any of the others won theirs.
