Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was the Australia vs England Rugby test match played on Saturday June 21st 2003?

Answer: Melbourne

Played in the superb Telstra Dome in Melbourne with the added quirk of having the roof closed. The conditions were far different from a week earlier, when England beat the All Blacks 15-13 in wet and blustry conditons. The stillness in the air was indicitive of some awesome rugby played.
2. Kyran Bracken was given the task of keeping the Aussie play maker number 9 quiet during the game, but who wore the Australian number 9 shirt?

Answer: George Gregan

Gregan was given very little room to use his talents. Bracken was superb in all that he did. His tackling was solid and his distribution effective. Bracken was later to be replaced by Matt Dawson after suffering a slight head knock. Dawson carried on as effectively making Gregan suffer.
3. England drew first blood with a superb try after five minutes, but who was the player to cross the line and open the scoring?

Answer: Will Greenwood

An excellent move starting from the Australia 10 yard line.
A number of backs handled the ball before Greenwood crossed the line in triumph, and an England lead of 5-0.
4. With the score at 5-0 thanks to the opening try, the English had the chance to convert the try for two more points. Which kicker successfully slotted the ball home for the 7-0 lead?

Answer: Jonny Wilkinson

Jonny Wilkinson had in the previous week, scored all the points for England from the boot. J.W has become a legendary number 10 for England, and one of the best kickers in world rugby. For him however, he had a poor game by his high standards.
5. Australia had been shown that England meant business, so it was to their relief, that on nine minutes they were awarded a penalty in front of the English posts. Which player kicked the goal to make it 3-7?

Answer: Joe Roff

Roff had a mixed game. He found that he had come short on a number of crucial kicks, and for the first time Australia had no one player who could win a game with the boot.
6. England continued to enforce their power, and had a number of very close calls to scoring further tries. However, they tended to over elaborate and use bad handling tactics which fooled no one including the referee. But what nationality was the referee?

Answer: Irish

Referee David McHugh was from Ireland. He handled the game very well and gave many decisions correctly. He was however, pretty leniant when it came to cards not being shown for foul play. However, a good referee is one who is not noticed, and McHugh was very rarely seen.
7. England started to play with real power, and a number of strong rucks pushed the Australian's back a number of meters, and it became only a matter of time before England scored their second try. But, who ran in the try in the far right hand corner of the field?

Answer: Mike Tindall

A glorious try with some very quick handling by the English, resulting in Mike Tindall storming over the line. However, the try was in the corner, and the resulting conversion by J. Wilkinson struck the post. So the score now was 12-3 to England.
8. Half time was approaching and England led 12-3, a number of great opportunities were lost to extend the lead, but it was the dominance of the England forwards that was apparent. Which one of the following was NOT in the front line in this game?

Answer: Jason Leonard

Big Leono was sadly missing from this game due to a various number of issues. Leonard had in the Six Nations championships of 2003, become the most capped player in English history surpassing the 100 Cap mark. Even Leono had to have a rest. The fowards for the game were Richard Hill, Ben Kay, Martin Johnson, Phil Vickery, Steve Thompson, Trevor Woodman, and Neil Back. One replacement was Steve Borthwick who took over from Kay after the latter, had to leave due to a cut to his nose.
9. Who was England Captain?

Answer: Martin Johnson

Big M.J was outstanding during the game. One huge tackle on Gregan left the Aussie star in pieces, and he never recovered from the hit. For many, M.J was the leader that all teams wanted and was given a rousing reception in the dressing room afterwards from his peers.
10. The Australians started the second half 3-12 down, and came out strong winning a number of strong line outs and starting to become stronger in the maul, but they closed to within how many points of England, before the next English score?

Answer: Three

Two penalty kicks by Joe Rolf got the Aussies to 9-12. Wilkinson converted a penalty however to extend the lead to 15-9.
11. The score was now 15-9 to England. A surging run from the Australian 10 yard line, resulted in England's third try which was converted and gave England a 22-9 lead, but who was the man who crossed the line?

Answer: Ben Cohen

Sensational try and one that put a huge smile on all English faces. Collecting the ball on the run, Cohen burst through a number of Australian defensive players and romp home under the posts. J Wilkinson kicks the conversion 22-9.
12. Australia was in trouble, and had only three minutes to do something about it. Then a lifeline was thrown when they score a fantastic 40 metre try, but who crosses the line?

Answer: Wendall Sailor

The big Aussie number 14 uses his sheer power and pace to stream past his opponents and set up a nervy ending, however the conversion was missed, and therefore two more scores were required in the closing session. This of course does not happen.
13. The conversion from the previous try was missed and gives the Australians little chance now of turning round the 8 point deficit. At 14-22 down, there is little chance and England stick a final three points on the board to make it 25-14, but the final points came from a drop goal?

Answer: False

J. Wilkinson nails a penalty from 20 metres and England had won as the buzzer goes.
14. How many times had England played and lost in Australia prior to victory in this game?

Answer: 10

Ten attempts ended in 10 defeats for England on Australian soil. Number 11 is an historic day for English rugby.
15. England's victory was one full of strength, power, and determination. The season which had run from October 2002 to the close of this match, had seen England play on how many occasions in which they won all of them?

Answer: 10

Yes, 10 victories were won during the season. Adding three from the end of last season it made 13 victories in total. The teams England beat in their 10 game run were, Italy, France, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, South Africa, New Zealand twice, and Australia twice. Surely this meant England were undisputed World Kings.
