Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Atlanta Stadium opened for business April 9, 1965, with the Milwaukee Braves playing a 3-game exhibition series against which American League team?

Answer: Detroit Tigers

The Braves won all 3 games, drawing a total of 106,000 fans. A great turnout, considering the Masters and a race at Atlanta Motor Speedway were also occurring that weekend. The minor league Atlanta Crackers would occupy the Stadium for the 1965 season, until the Braves finally moved down from Milwaukee in 1966.
2. For much of the 1980s, there was a person dressed in a monk's outfit who led Braves cheers atop the dugout roof. He was named Brother who?

Answer: Francis

His real name was Bob Kelly. At the time, he was co-owner of a pub named, "The Pew and Brew", in Marietta, GA.
3. Who tossed out the ceremonial first pitch in the Braves' first Atlanta game on April 12, 1966?

Answer: Atlanta Mayor Ivan Allen, Jr.

The Braves lost 3-2 in 13 innings to Pittsburgh. Allen served as mayor from 1962 to 1970. He was a highly respected leader for the Civil Rights movement, and helped bring major league baseball, football, and basketball to Atlanta. He oversaw construction of interstate highways and laid down the groundwork for MARTA trains and buses. Allen also threw out the first ball in the stadium's final regular season game on Sept. 23, 1996. Allen died in July of 2003 at age 82.
4. Who hit the first upper deck home run in Atlanta Stadium?

Answer: Willie Smith

Chicago Cub Willie Smith crushed it on June 10, 1969, off Braves pitcher Ron Reed. Smith played 9 years with 5 different clubs, and is the only black Major Leaguer to pitch in more than 20 games and play the field in more than 20 games. He died January 18, 2006 at age 66.
5. The final out of Phil Niekro's August 5, 1973, no-hitter vs. the Padres was made by who?

Answer: Cito Gaston

The Braves won 9-0, which included an inside-the-park homer. Also known as Clarence Gaston, Cito was a Brave in 1967 & 1975-78 and would later manage the Toronto Blue Jays to World Series titles in 1992 and 1993.
6. In the early 1980s, Chief Noc-a-Homa, had a female assistant mascot with him. Her name was Princess Win-a-Lotta.

Answer: True

Princess Win-a-Lotta wore a skimpy blue-and-white Braves Indian outfit, and looked very much like Princess Diana.
7. Who was on-deck when Hank Aaron hit home run #715 on April 8, 1974?

Answer: Dusty Baker

Outfielder Dusty Baker would go on to have a fine career with L.A., San Francisco, and Oakland. And an even better career as manager of the Giants, and later the Cubs.
8. For the 1990 season, which Southern celebrity was doing TV, newspaper and radio ads for the Braves?

Answer: Jim Varney (aka Ernest P. Worrell)

Besides watching a terrible team on the field that year, fans had to endure the "Hey, Vern" guy. In one April game, fans booed poor Ernest when he threw a game's first pitch, and booed even more when the scoreboard showed him singing the 7th inning stretch. When John Schuerholz became Braves GM in the fall of 1990, one of his first moves was booting Ernest. Varney died in 2000.
9. Which was determined to be the official cause of Atlanta Stadium's pre-game fire in the club level, on July 20, 1993?

Answer: A spilled sterno can

The fire consumed 8 skyboxes and part of the press box. The game didn't start for about 2 hours, but once it did, the Braves came back from 5-0 down to beat St. Louis 8-5. Fred McGriff, just acquired from the Padres in a trade, homered in his debut.
10. Which Brave caught the final out of the 1995 World Series, to give Atlanta their first World Series title?

Answer: Marquis Grissom

He was playing center field at the time. The Braves beat the Indians 1-0 in Game 6 in Atlanta on October 28, 1995. Grissom has played for a number of teams since his major league debut in 1989. He went to high school in College Park, GA, next door to Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson Airport.
