Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. He ran the franchise for the first 29 year: what was Tex Schramm's real first name?

Answer: Texas

His given name was Texas E. Schramm. He was the first major hire for the expansion franchise, and would run the franchise for its first 29 years, including hiring Tom Landry. In addition to his efforts in making the Cowboys successful, his accomplishments include being the NFL point person on the merger talks with the AFL, coming up with the concept for the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders, and miking the referee.

He left the team shortly after Jerry Jones took over, and was elected to the Pro Football HOF in 1991.
2. When one existing NFL franchise owner threatened to vote against the Dallas expansion bid, would-be Dallas owner Clint Murchison bought the rights to their fight song, and threatened to not let them play it unless he voted yes. Which team was it?

Answer: Washington Redskins

And you thought the rivalry was mostly make believe? Composer Barnee Beeskin sold the copyright for "Hail to the Redskins", to Murchison for a a great deal of money. When Washington owner George Marshall threatened to vote against him, apparently over concerns that he'd lose part of the southern US market, he was told that in that case, he would never get to play the song again.

He voted yes, and the rivalry was born.
3. Dallas had a full set of draft picks in the 1960 college draft?

Answer: False

The only draft they got in was the expansion draft. They did sign several players as free agents, most notably Don Meredith and Don Perkins, who were both signed to personal service contracts before the 2 players were drafted by other franchises. With the contracts already executed, deals were arranged, and Dallas had their future starting quarterback and fullback in place. Bob Lily was their first official draft choice, taken in the first round of the 1961 draft.
4. After an 0-11-1 record in the 1960 season, the Cowboys won their first game in 1961 against what team?

Answer: Pittsburgh

Allen Green hit a 27 yd field goal on the last play, to give the Cowboys a 27-24 win. They would finish the season 4-9-1.
5. In 1963, the Dallas Texans of the AFL who'd been competing with the Cowboys for 3 years, moved the franchise to where?

Answer: Kansas City

Although the Texans were far more successful on the field, they weren't having any more luck drawing people to the Cotton Bowl than the Cowboys, and moved the team to Kansas City, where they've been the Chiefs ever since. Their owner, Lamar Hunt, was the AFL rep negotiating with Tex Schramm during the merger talks.
6. Which all-time Dallas Cowboy was not drafted in 1964?

Answer: Jerry Tubbs

Jerry Tubbs was one of the few players selected in the 1960 expansion draft that actually could play, and stayed with the team for 8 seasons. The odd thing about the other three players, was that only one of the three players, future hall of famer Mel Renfro, actually played that season. Under a rule allowing future picks, Bob Hayes was picked but didn't play until 1965, where he was so much faster than any defender that teams implemented zones just for him. Roger Staubach didn't make it to Dallas until 1969 because of his military commitment.
7. He subsequently became an NFL head coach: who threw a touchdown pass in what became known as the "Ice Bowl"?

Answer: Dan Reeves

In the 1967 NFL Championship game, the game time temperature in Green Bay was -13, the coldest ever temperature for a playoff game. Reeves, who had played quarterback in college, threw a 50 yard halfback option pass to Lance Renzel for a touchdown, that gave Dallas the lead in the 4th quarter.

Then Bart Starr's quarterback sneak in the last 16 seconds, won the game 16-13 for the Packers.
8. Cowboy player Chuck Howley was the first player to win a Super Bowl MVP award from the losing team. What position did he play?

Answer: Linebacker

In Super Bowl V, a game dominated by defense and turnovers, Howley intercepted 2 passes, and was named the game's MVP even though Dallas lost 16-13 on a last minute field goal. He would go on to intercept another pass to set up a Cowboy score in Super Bowl VI as well.
9. In 1971, Dallas played a game in which quarterbacks Roger Staubach and Craig Morton alternated plays?

Answer: True

After having started each quarterback in 3 games, Tom Landry actually alternated them on every play against Chicago. Following the 21-19 loss, and with the team's record at 4-3, Landry decided to start Staubach full time, and Dallas won all of their remaining games, including Super Bowl VI over Miami 24-3.
10. Roger Staubach's reputation as "Captain Comeback" primarily dated from 1972, when he came off the bench to lead Dallas from a 28-13 deficit in a playoff game to a 30-28 win. Who were they playing?

Answer: San Francisco

Staubach had suffered a shoulder separation in the exhibition season, and was backing up Craig Morton at the time. Dallas scored two touchdowns in the final two minutes to pull out the victory in the divisional playoff.
11. Although the Cowboys missed the 1974 playoffs, a raw rookie quarterback who'd never played in an NFL game before, led Dallas to a come from behind 24-23 win on Thanksgiving. Who was he?

Answer: Clint Longley

Redskins defender Diron Talbert reportedly said before the game that they would knock Roger Staubach out of the game, and in fact he was injured in the third quarter, forcing Longley into the game. Dallas scored 21 points to pull out the win, in what the Cowboy's Blaine Nye called, "the triumph of the uncluttered mind".

It was Longley's only highlight, as he didn't last past the 1976 training camp, where he threw a punch at Staubach and was gone soon after.
12. When Dallas beat Minnesota 17-14 in the 1975 playoffs on what would become known as the "Hail Mary" pass, who unintentionally gave it that name?

Answer: Roger Staubach

After the game, Staubach was asked about the 50 yd touchdown pass to Drew Pearson. He said that he told Pearson to go deep, threw the ball as far as he could, and said a Hail Mary. The name not only stuck to that play, but has become the general term for end of half, or end of game deep passes to the end zone.
13. Dallas won Super Bowl XII against Denver 27-10. A key play in the game was a diving catch for a touchdown that you've probably seen about a million times, on Super Bowl related highlights. Who caught the pass?

Answer: Butch Johnson

The 45 yard reception gave Dallas a 20-3 lead in the third quarter, on the way to a 27-10 win.
14. What Cowboy defensive back was named to the NFL All-Decade Team of the 1970s?

Answer: Cliff Harris

Harris was an undrafted free agent from Quachita Baptist University in Arkansas, who went on to be named All-Pro 4 times in a 10 year career, and was named to the "Sports Illustrated" All-Century Team.
15. What rookie defensive back led the NFL in interceptions in the 1981 season?

Answer: Everson Walls

Walls, an undrafted free agent out of Grambling, had 11 interceptions in his rookie year. He would end up leading the league in interceptions in three different seasons, and finished his career with 57 interceptions. For better or worse, the game photo you've seen him in on many occasions is the Dwight Clark catch in the 1981 NFC championship. He was the defender.
16. When Dallas beat NY Giants 28-21, to win their last division title during the Landry years, which Cowboy defensive lineman returned a deflected pass for a key touchdown in the 2nd quarter?

Answer: Jim Jeffcoat

With the Giants up 14-7 and driving late in the 2nd quarter, a Phil Simms pass was deflected by Ed 'Too Tall' Jones right to Jeffcoat, who took it 65 yards for the tying score. The other fun fact about the game was that because of injuries, Steve Pelleur, who had never taken a snap in a regular season game before, was throwing to backup receiver Karl Powe on the 4th quarter touchdown drive that clinched the win.
17. How many games did Dallas win when Troy Aikman started in 1989?

Answer: 0

He started 12 games during an ugly 1-15 season, but because he was injured, Steve Walsh was at quarterback when they beat Washington for their only win.
18. What Dallas defensive lineman scored a touchdown in the Cowboy's 52-17 victory over Buffalo in Super Bowl XXVII

Answer: Jimmie Jones

The key to the question is "scored", not "almost" scored. Jones, who was a backup on the defensive line, caught a fumble that had been caused by Charles Haley and deflected by Leon Lett, then went 2 yards for a touchdown that gave Dallas a lead they would never relinquish. Lett would almost score a touchdown as well late in the 4th quarter, but had the ball stripped from him by a Buffalo player as he was about to cross the goal line.
19. In the final game of the 1993 season, Emmitt Smith suffered a separated shoulder in the 2nd quarter, but still gained 168 yards rushing and 61 yards receiving in the 16-13 overtime win. What team did they beat?

Answer: Giants

The game was at the Meadowlands, and was critical because the winner got a bye and home field advantage in the playoffs, and the loser was a wild card team. In an outstanding career, this was one of Emmitt Smith's finest performances.
20. Whose 2 interceptions played a major role in Dallas beating Pittsburgh in Super Bowl XXX, and led to him winning the MVP award?

Answer: Larry Brown

Both Brown interceptions, set up short Cowboy touchdowns in the second half as Dallas beat Pittsburgh 27-17.
