Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which of these years did the Yankees win five World Series in a row?

Answer: 1949-1953

The 1925-1929 Yankees starred Murderers Row. The 1936-1940 Yankees was DiMaggio and Dickey time, while the 1951-1955 Yankees showcased Mantle, Berra, and Rizzuto.
2. Who was the Yankees regular first baseman before Lou Gehrig took over?

Answer: Wally Pipp

Lou Gehrig took over for Wally Pipp at first base in June 1923, because Pipp complained of a headache, and Pipp never got his spot back. Gehrig's consecutive game streak started the day before when he pinch-hit.
3. Prior to the arrival of Derek Jeter in 1995, who was the last rookie starting shortstop for the Yankees?

Answer: Tom Tresh

Though the other three did play for the Yankees at some point, Koenig was a part of 1927 Yankees, Rizzuto was the 1950 MVP for the Yankees, and Tony Fernandez was the shortstop for the Yankees before Captain Jeter came along. Tom Tresh would be our man, being a rookie, and starting at shortstop in 1962. He later played in the outfield.
4. In 1978, what rare feat did former pitcher Bob Lemon accomplish for the Yankees?

Answer: Take over as manager mid-season and win the World Series

Bob Lemon played for the Cleveland Indians from 1941-1958 and won 207 games for them. He had a 3.23 ERA and was elected to the Hall of Fame as a pitcher, after starting his playing career as a light hitting third baseman.
As a manager, he managed the Royals from 1970-1972, the White Sox from 1977-1978, the Yankees from 1978-1979, then the Yankess again from 1981-1982. Ironically, Billy Martin who Lemon replaced in 1978, became his replacement in 1979. Gene Michael, another man who was replaced by Lemon, replaced Lemon in 1982.
5. The Yankees had two players who eventually played catcher/left field on their 1956 roster. Who were they?

Answer: Yogi Berra and Elston Howard

Ralph Terry would be a Yankees/A's pitcher of the same era. Thurman Munson did not start playing in 1956, while Ralph Houk was Yogi's backup and later a manager. Both Yogi and Elston went on to have their jersey numbers retired by the Yankees.
6. While the Cubs heckled Babe Ruth back in 1932 World Series, who did the Yankees heckle?

Answer: Guy Bush

In a more than documented issue by the Cubs, Bush was heckled for having a dark complexion and curly hair. Some say that Ruth called his famous shot in the series as a payback, because the Cubs were using a racial term towards Ruth.
7. How many votes did Babe Ruth receive on his Hall of Fame ballots, out of the 226?

Answer: 215

Ruth tied Honus Wagner. Cobb received 222 on the very same 1936 ballot. When the first ballot without Ruth's name appeared, there was a discussion concerning how could anyone leave Ruth out of the Hall of Fame. Throw in Christy Mathewson and Walter Johnson, and the original five were inducted.
8. Babe Ruth retired with what pitching win/loss record?

Answer: 94-46

He threw most of his games with the Red Sox. He pitched five games for the Yankees, and won all five attendance boosters. Overall, he had a 2.28 career ERA while pitching 107 complete games, and 17 shutouts in his 148 starts.
9. Which of the following once Yankees players, played for every team in the AL East except for the Orioles?

Answer: Eric Hinske

Clemens and Wells, two long lasting pitchers who were teammates on the 2002-2003 Yankees, never played for the Rays, while John Flaherty was a catcher for the Red Sox, Rays, and Yankees for the most of his career. Flaherty never played for the Jays. Hinske stepped into the pinstripes in 2009.
10. Which pitcher threw a no-hitter for the Yankees despite having only one hand?

Answer: Jim Abbott

The no-hitter was in 1993. Andy Hawkins lost an eight inning no-hitter while playing for the Yankees in 1990. Mordecai "Three Fingers" Brown had six consecutive seasons of 20 wins between 1906-1911 for the Cubs. Jim Mecir, despite a club foot, played quite successfully in the majors, and one of the last pitchers to throw a screwball.
