My Life as an Everton Supporter Quiz

Since 1996, I've supported Liverpool's less famous team, the (not so) mighty Everton FC. This quiz looks at the team over the years that I've been a supporter.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My first match as an Everton fan was the final game of the 1995-96 season, and Aston Villa were the opponents. Everton won 1-0. Who scored the winning goal?

Answer: Joe Parkinson

Both Limpar, my then favourite player, and Rideout came on as subs, and they both helped set up the goal. Limpar crossed to Rideout, who in turn passed to Parkinson. Parkinson scored outside the area in the 78th minute.
2. Everton's 1996-1997 season proved disastrous. Joe Royle, the manager of the FA Cup-winning team, left after a dispute with then chairman Peter Johnson, and was replaced by which former Everton manager?

Answer: Howard Kendall

After a month with Dave Watson as caretaker manager, Kendall returned to Everton. This was his third tenure as manager at the club, but unfortunately, it failed to live up to the great days of the '80s, with Everton dropping rapidly down the table and several players left during his tenure, including cup winners John Ebbrell, Anders Limpar, Matt Jackson and Vinny Samways in the 1996-1997 season, and Neville Southall, Andy Hinchcliffe, Graham Stuart and Earl Barrett the season after. Kendall left by mutual consent at the end of the 1997-1998 season, after Everton narrowly avoided relegation.
3. My former stepfather, a Sheffield Wednesday fan, accompanied us to Everton's home game against Sheffield Wednesday on 25th April 1998. What was the final score?

Answer: Everton 1 Sheffield Wednesday 3

Mark Pembridge - who would later sign for Everton himself - scored Wednesday's first two goals, with Paolo di Canio adding a third in the 90th minute after receiving Kevin Pressman's long clearance. Everton's sole goal came from Duncan Ferguson. Former Everton defender and corner expert Andy Hinchcliffe received a warm welcome from the home fans.
4. Which homegrown Everton player made his full senior debut against Tottenham Hotspur on 17th August 2002, aged just 16?

Answer: Wayne Rooney

Rooney was Everton's youngest debutant since Joe Royle, and appeared just a few months shy of his 17th birthday. He was named the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year in 2002. He left to join Manchester United in August 2004, and had a glittering career there, racking up 183 goals, becoming their captain and one of the few English players to win the FA Cup, Premier League, UEFA Champions' League, League Cup, Europa League and FIFA Club World Cup (along with team mate Michael Carrick).

Many seasons later, aged 31, he returned to Everton at the start of the 2017-2018 season and was the club's top scorer for that season.
5. Throughout my university career, and for some years afterwards, David Moyes was Everton's manager. For how many full seasons did he manage Everton in total?

Answer: 11

David Moyes spent a massive 11 seasons at Everton, starting on 14th March 2002 during the 2001-02 season, and leaving at the end of the 2012-13 season to replace Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United. During his time at Everton, they regularly finished in the top half (difficult second season aside), and even made it into the Europa and Champions' Leagues, as well as a Cup Final.
6. In 2009, Everton reached their first FA Cup Final since 1995, against Chelsea. Who scored a record-breakingly early goal for Everton at just 25 seconds in?

Answer: Louis Saha

The previous record for the fastest goal in an FA Cup Final was set by Bob Chatt of Aston Villa in the 1895 Cup Final against West Bromwich Albion, at 30 seconds. Unfortunately for Everton, Chelsea fought back, with goals from Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard, and went on to become the 2009 FA Cup winners.
7. Roberto Martinez replaced David Moyes in 2013, though I only saw Everton play under him twice. To which position did he take Everton in his first season?

Answer: 5th

Under former Wigan Athletic manager Martinez, Everton achieved one of their highest points tallies of all time, as well as beating Manchester United both at home and away for the first time since Harry Catterick's tenure in 1969-1970. (Wigan, funnily enough, had knocked Everton out of the FA Cup the previous season.) Antolin Alcaraz, Arouna Koné, James McCarthy and Joel Robles all followed Martinez from Wigan, and Romelu Lukaku was brought in on loan from Chelsea.

He would subsequently become Everton's top goalscorer for four seasons running.
8. In Roberto Martinez's final season at Everton, the squad performed poorly in the league, but reached two semi-finals. Manchester United were the FA Cup semi-finalists and eventual winners, but who knocked Everton out of the League Cup semi-final?

Answer: Manchester City

Everton beat Manchester City 2-1 at Goodison Park in the first leg but sadly, Manchester City fought back with a 3-1 victory in the second leg at the Etihad. City's then manager Manuel Pellegrini criticised Ramiro Funes Mori's goal, which he believed was offside, and the referee for not granting a penalty when Kevin Mirallas brought down Jesus Navas in the box. Everton goalkeeper Joel Robles also angered City fans when he mistakenly tried to help Kevin de Bruyne up, only for de Bruyne to end up screaming in agony, as he had injured his cruciate.
9. Ronald Koeman was sacked in 23rd October 2017, after just over a season in charge, and was succeeded by Sam Allardyce on 30th November 2017. However, in the interim period, a former Everton player temporarily left his job as manager of the U21 side and became caretaker manager for 8 games. Who was he?

Answer: David Unsworth

Unsworth, once loved by Everton fans for his penalty skills, managed Everton through the end of their disastrous Europa League campaign. Franny Jeffers temporarily took over as the manager of the U21 team. This was not the first time he had been asked to step in as a caretaker, as he had also managed Everton for the final game of the 2015-16 season after Roberto Martinez's sacking. During his final game as caretaker, Everton beat West Ham United 4-0, with a Wayne Rooney hat trick - one of which was scored from the halfway line - and the other goal from Ashley Williams.
10. The 2018 World Cup was a good time to be an England supporter as an Evertonian, as one of the club's players made the starting England line-up ahead of Stoke City's Jack Butland and Burnley's Nick Pope, and was commended for his performances. He was signed from Sunderland at the start of the 2017-2018 season, but who was he?

Answer: Jordan Pickford

Everton signed Jordan Pickford for an initial fee of £25 million, making him one of history's most expensive goalkeepers. England's penalty hoodoo was broken in the 2018 World Cup during the shoot-out against Colombia, when Pickford saved Carlos Bacca's penalty, and he was named Man of the Match after England beat Sweden 2-0. (Davies and Kenny were products of Everton's academy, while Lookman had been signed from Charlton the previous season.)
