Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Tempers flared during the FA Cup quarter final between Everton and Chelsea in 2016, when the volatile Diego Costa appeared to bite an Everton player, resulting in him being sent off. Who was his alleged victim, who also received a red card?

Answer: Gareth Barry

Diego Costa had had previous run-ins with Everton the season before, when he taunted Seamus Coleman after the latter scored an own goal during Chelsea's 6-3 win over them. Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard came to Coleman's defence. Costa's temper repeatedly got him into trouble during his time at Chelsea, with him stamping on two Liverpool players during the 2015 League Cup semi final.

He also slapped Laurent Koscielny during a match between Chelsea and Arsenal. Against Everton, Costa appeared to bite Barry, but Barry - who was also sent off later in the game - stated afterwards that Costa had not bitten him.
2. Of which offence was Wayne Rooney convicted in September 2017 while playing for Everton?

Answer: Driving with excess alcohol

Wayne Rooney, no stranger to controversy, was arrested for driving whilst over the legal limit after a night out in Cheshire. Everton fined him two weeks' wages, and he was sentenced to community service. After he signed for DC United and moved out to the US, he was again arrested in December 2018 for driving with excess alcohol.

Rooney also got into hot water with former Everton manager David Moyes, after he claimed in his autobiography that Moyes had leaked the reasons why Rooney left Everton to the press. Both parties settled out of court.
3. Which two goalkeepers, along with John Fashanu, were accused of match fixing in 1994?

Answer: Bruce Grobbelaar and Hans Segers

Segers was at Wimbledon at the time, as was Fashanu, and Grobbelaar at Liverpool. Along with Malaysian businessman Heng Suan Lim, the three were accused of match fixing for a gambling syndicate in Asia; the 'Sun' claimed, for example, that Grobbelaar had accepted £40,000 to ensure that Liverpool lost a match to Newcastle, and Grobbelaar was caught on tape discussing match fixing. Grobbelaar denied the accusations, insisting that he was only gathering evidence to give to the police.

He sued the 'Sun' for libel, though he later had to pay the newspaper's legal costs and his libel damages were slashed to a measly £1 as the judge believed that Grobbelaar had behaved dishonestly. All four men were acquitted, but for the two goalkeepers, it wasn't quite over. Grobbelaar and Segers were later given a suspended ban for breaching betting regulations.
4. Senegalese striker Ali Dia was the centre of a hoax in 1996 when he claimed to be George Weah's cousin, and was subsequently signed by Southampton on a one-month contract. However, he turned out to be less than impressive. Who was the unlucky manager taken in by Dia's deception?

Answer: Graeme Souness

Souness received a call from a man claiming to be the great George Weah, claiming that Dia was his cousin, had been capped 13 times and played for Paris Saint-Germain. In reality, this was a friend of Dia's impersonating Weah. Dia had played in France, but only for lower league teams, and in Britain had failed trials at Gillingham and Bournemouth.

In his first, last and only game, against Leeds United, Dia came on for Matt Le Tissier, Southampton's star player, 32 minutes in when Le Tissier was injured. Le Tissier was unimpressed by Dia's poor performance, stating he played 'like Bambi on ice'. Dia was then substituted for Ken Monkou at 85 minutes. Two weeks into his contrast, he was released and went on to play for Gateshead.
5. Which player was arrested and imprisoned for ten months in 2012, after he got involved in a drunken brawl while playing for Watford?

Answer: Troy Deeney

Along with his brother and two other men, Deeney got into a fight with a group of students in his native Birmingham in February 2012. He was caught on film punching one student to the ground and kicking him, breaking his jawbone, before punching another.

He also attacked a police officer when arrested, breaking the officer's collarbone. As this was Deeney's first imprisonable offence, however, he only served three months of his sentence.
6. Kevin Pressman was one of Sheffield Wednesday's longest-serving players, but he also held the less favourable record of being one of the fastest sendings-off in league football, at just 13 seconds. What was Pressman's offence?

Answer: Handling the ball outside his area

Sheffield Wednesday were away to Wolverhampton Wanderers on 13th August 2000 when this happened. Kevin Muscat played the ball to Temuri Ketsbaia. Pressman went to intercept the ball, but in doing so, went outside the box and was subsequently shown the red card. Ketsbaia's eye remained unscathed.

Other fast bookings have included Liverpool's Steven Gerrard against Manchester United in 2015, sent off for stamping on Ander Herrera after coming on as a sub (38 seconds) and Chelsea's Vinnie Jones against Sheffield United, receiving a yellow card 3 seconds in for a foul against Dane Whitehouse.
7. Sergio Ramos angered both Liverpool fans and players alike in the 2017-2018 Champions' League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid, when he committed a particularly heinous foul that injured one of Liverpool's players. What did he do?

Answer: He dislocated Mohamed Salah's shoulder.

Ramos' challenge on Mohamed Salah, where he appeared to grab hold of Salah's arm, left the Egyptian with a dislocated shoulder, and he had to leave the pitch. Ramos also elbowed goalkeeper Loris Karius, giving him concussion, although he denied deliberately elbowing him and blamed Virgil van Dijk for pushing him into Karius. Losing Salah was the beginning of the end for Liverpool; they conceded goals from Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema and ended up losing 3-1. Both Benzema's goal and Bale's second goal were the result of monumental errors by Karius, as he threw the ball to Benzema by accident and fumbled Bale's shot. Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp was furious with Ramos, calling his challenge 'vicious' and 'brutal'.
8. During a match between Newcastle United and Hull City, who was sent off for headbutting Hull's David Meyler?

Answer: Alan Pardew

Yes, this was a rare incident of a manager being sent off for violent conduct, instead of a player. Pardew, a manager who was greatly disliked by many Newcastle fans, headbutted Meyler when the ball went out of play and Meyler pushed past him to get to the ball. Both the club and the FA fined Pardew, and he was banned from the touchline for several games.

This was not his first encounter with Hull; while managing Charlton Athletic, he tried to intervene during a fight between both teams' players.

While managing West Ham, he also got into a fierce touchline argument with Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger, and also got into hot water for swearing at Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini while managing Newcastle.
9. When Italy played France in the 2006 World Cup final, Italy's Marco Materazzi insulted the sister of France's Zinedine Zidane. How did Zidane respond?

Answer: He headbutted Materazzi.

Zinedine Zidane had been France's star player throughout the tournament, receiving the Golden Ball before the final, but it all ended badly for him when he was sent off in the 110th minute for attacking Materazzi in a rage. Italy went on to win the final 5-3 on penalties. Zidane was heavily criticised in the press for being a bad example, but many fans forgave him for the incident, according to polls. Zidane subsequently retired from football, doing community service with children as part of a FIFA project to atone for his behaviour.
10. Jose Mourinho was one of top-flight football's more notorious managers in terms of bad behaviour. In fact, he got a two-match stadium ban during the 2005 Champions' League, while he was Chelsea manager, and was forbidden to contact his staff at Chelsea when they were playing Bayern Munich. He was supposed to be at a leisure centre, but instead snuck into Stamford Bridge to give the team talk before the match. How did he avoid being caught?

Answer: He hid in a laundry basket.

Believe it or not, the story about Mourinho and the laundry basket is true! Mourinho confirmed this in January 2019 during a spell as a pundit on BeIN Sports, stating that he hid in there for 10 minutes and thought he was going to suffocate. His justification was that he wanted to be with his players, so he went to the dressing room long before kickoff. Goalkeeping coach Silvino Louro relayed notes from the changing room to the touchline while assistant manager Rui Faria wore an earpiece, concealed under a beanie hat (which did not normally wear), and made officials suspicious when he constantly scratched his ear.

However, Mourinho could not leave the stadium without being seen, so Chelsea's kit man, Stewart Bannister, let Mourinho hide in a laundry basket and wheeled it out of the stadium with the manager inside.
