Answer: 16 games

Today going 16 games over .500 would easily make the playoffs, but the 1969-70 Montreal Canadiens couldn't dispite going 38-22-6. The reason was the unbalenced playoff format where the East division had all the strong teams which were all original six teams, while the West were all the 3rd year expansion teams. Montreal had 92 points which would have led the West, but because the top 4 teams in each division made the playoffs they were out. Montreal was just 7 points back of the Blackhawks, and Bruins, and was tied with the Rangers for the fourth and final playoff spot, but the Rangers won the tiebreaker because they had scored more goals than Montreal.

Gordie Howe would become the first 1,000 games man instead on November 26, 1961 breaking Ted Lindsay's mark. Ted Lindsay would end up playing 1,000 games anyway when he came out of retirement in 1964-65 to play 1 more season adding 69 more games and 173 penalty minutes and 4 minutes behing the penalty minute leader of that year, Carl Brewer.
