Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When was the Grand National first broadcast on radio?

Answer: 1927

Sprig won the race that year after coming 4th in 1925 & 1926. He was bred in 1917 by Captain Richard Pennington who had hoped to ride him in the steeplechase. Unfortunately, Captain Pennington was killed towards the end of the WWI.
2. Newmarket in Suffolk has the July course which is used for summer racing, and the Rowley Mile for spring & autumn racing. Who or what is the spring/autumn course named after?

Answer: Old Rowley, a favourite horse of King Charles II

Old Rowley was also a nickname used for the King, probably referring to his interest in the ladies.
3. How many races did Ribot (by Tenerani out of Romanella) win in his unbeaten career?

Answer: 16

Ribot was bred by Federico Tesio who also bred Nearco (unbeaten in 14 races). He only ran in England once, winning The King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes by 5 lengths on soft going in 1956. Ribot died & is buried in the USA.
4. Paintings of the foundation sire, The Godolphin Arabian, often included the stable cat. What was the cat called?

Answer: Grimalkin

The horse was buried at the stable yard belonging to Lord Godolphin. His grave stone can still be seen in the Wandlebury Ring, situated on the Gog Magog Downs.
5. Which horse in 1965 came 3rd behind Arkle and Mill House in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, and 6th the following month at Badminton Horse Trials?

Answer: Stoney Crossing

Stoney Crossing was ridden in both events by the Australian Bill Roycroft. Roycroft competed in five Olympic Games.
6. The Epsom Derby of 1844 was won by a horse called Running Rein, but he was disqualified. Which horse who came in second, was named Derby winner?

Answer: Orlando

The English Derby is a race for three-year old colts & fillies. The winner in 1844 was discovered to be a four-year old called Maccabeus. Orlando was very successful as a sire. He is grand sire to Ruthless who won the first running of the Belmont stakes in 1867.
7. Lester Piggott was the first teenager to ride 100 winners in a season. Who was the next one?

Answer: Frankie Dettori

Frankie Dettori achieved this in 1990. In 1996, he rode his 'magnificent seven' winning all seven races in one day at Ascot. He finally won the Epsom Derby in his 15th attempt riding Authorized. His trademark flying dismount always raises a cheer in the winners enclosure.
8. In 2009, a new racecourse opened in the UK. What was the date of the first race at Ffos Las in Carmarthenshire, Wales?

Answer: 18th June

Ffos Las is the first NH racecourse to have been built in the UK for about 80 years, and was the 3rd racecourse in Wales. Eventually, it is hoped to accommodate other equestrian activities on the site.
9. What do Windsor and Fontwell racecourses have in common?

Answer: Both have figure of eight courses

Fontwell has an oval hurdle course whilst the steeplechase course is a figure of eight. Windsor racecourse is actually almost on an island as the river Thames is on one side & Clewer stream is on the other. Windsor Castle makes a spectacular back drop.
10. Arkle and Foinavon were both owned by Anne Duchess of Westminster, although the latter was sold as he proved to be an indifferent jumper in his early career. What geological feature did she name them after?

Answer: Mountains in Scotland

Foinavon won his Grand National in 1967. He was so far behind that he managed to avoid the pile up at the 23rd fence. Known as a laid back horse and not the most reliable jumper, he is remembered for grazing on the track after a fall, instead of running on with the herd.
