Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which MLB player hit the most home runs in the decade of the 1990s?

Answer: Mark McGwire

McGwire shared the 1990s between the Athletics and the Cardinals. McGwire's season high was 70 in 1998 and he topped the 50-plateau four times. He hit 405 home runs in the decade.
2. Which of these Hall of Fame greats did not win a season MVP Award in the 1990s?

Answer: Tony Gwynn

Not only did Gwynn not win a MVP Award in the decade, but he somehow never won the award in his career at all. The closest that Tony came to winning the award was finishing third in 1984 behind Ryne Sandburg of the Cubs and Keith Hernandez of the Mets. In 1994, Gwynn batted an amazing .394 but still finished in seventh for the MVP Award.
3. Which MLB team had the worst season record in the 1990s?

Answer: Detroit Tigers

The Tigers could only pull out 53 wins against 109 losses in 1996. Detroit could not get an eight-game winner out of their pitching rotation either. They would somewhat rebound the following season by going 79-83. The Florida Marlins led Major League Baseball for the decade with the most team losses.
4. In the 1990s, how many MLB ballparks were either new or had a major refurbishment?

Answer: 11

The decade was a huge construction boom for Major League Baseball. The new or rebuilt ballparks were New Comiskey in Chicago 1991, Camden Yards in Baltimore 1992, Joe Robbie Stadium in Florida 1993, Jacobs Field in Cleveland 1994, The Ballpark in Arlington 1994, Coors Field in Colorado 1995, Edison Field in Anaheim 1997, Turner Field in Atlanta 1997, Bank One Ballpark in Arizona 1998, Tropicana Field in Tampa Bay 1998, and Safeco Field in Seattle 1999.
5. Which Hall of Fame pitcher threw the most strikeouts in the 1990s?

Answer: Randy Johnson

Johnson threw 2538 strikeouts in the decade with Seattle, Houston, and Arizona. His strikeout season high was 364 with the Diamondbacks in 1999, while also leading the league in strikeouts, complete games, and ERA. Those stats along with his 17-9 record got him the first of four consecutive Cy Young Awards. Johnson was inducted into the Hall in 2015.
6. Which of these teams did not reach a World Series in the 1990s?

Answer: Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers went to only one NLDS during the decade, and lost that to the Braves in 1996. The Braves went to an amazing five World Series in the decade, yet won only one of them, in 1995 against the Indians. The Yankees continued their World Series endeavours by going to three. The Blue Jays went to consecutive World Series in 1992 and 1993 while winning both.
7. Which National League manager won two Manager of the Year Awards in the 1990s?

Answer: Dusty Baker

Baker won his two awards in 1993 and 1997 with the San Francisco Giants, neither taking the team to a World Series visit. Dusty won a third Manager of the Year Award in 2000 with the Giants also. Torre won two awards in the decade with the American League Yankees.
8. What event occured in baseball history on April 15, 1997?

Answer: Commissioner Bud Selig proclaimed that the number 42 would never be issued again in honor of Jackie Robinson.

It was the 50th anniversary of Robinson's debut, breaking the color barrier with the Dodgers and Major League Baseball on April 15, 1947. Robinson won the Rookie of the Year honors in that season, then the NL MVP in 1949. He retired after 10 seasons in 1956 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1962. He died 10 years later.
9. How many new teams entered into the Major Leagues in the 1990s?

Answer: 4

The four teams were the Colorado Rockies and Florida Marlins to the National League in 1993, then the Arizona Diamondbacks to the National League and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to the American League in 1998.
10. Which of these Hall of Fame greats died in the 1990s?

Answer: Mickey Mantle

The other Hall of Fame greats all died in 2010. Mantle had a Hall of Fame career from 1951-1968 and all in the pinstripes of the Yankees. Mantle won three MVP Awards including his 1956 Triple Crown batting season. He was also the MVP Award runner-up three times. Mantle set many league records including some World Series records by appearing in 12 different World Series and hitting 18 home runs.

The "Commerce Comet" died in 1995 at the age of 63 in Dallas.
