Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. July 4, 1912, was pitcher George Mullin's birthday, and he pitched a no-hitter in the first year of Tiger Stadium's long history. From that day until the park's closing in 1999, only one other Tiger would pitch a no-hitter in Detroit. Who was this hard-throwing right-hander?

Answer: Virgil Trucks

It was May 15, 1952. Vic Wertz' home run in the last of the ninth inning made Trucks a 1-0 victory over the Washington Senators. When Wertz hit the dramatic home run, Trucks leaped in the dugout, banging his head on the dugout roof, and nearly knocking himself out. Trucks would throw a second no-hitter later that season at Yankee Stadium, another 1-0 squeaker.

It was not until 2007 that another Tiger pitched a no-hitter in Detroit. Justin Verlander did so at Comerica Park.
2. Who was the only pitcher to ever pitch a perfect game at Tiger Stadium?

Answer: Charlie Robertson

It was April 30, 1922. Charlie Robertson of the White Sox dazzled the "Tygers", so called because their manager was Ty Cobb.
3. April 30, 1939, Tigers fans watched the final game of which great Yankee's career?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

It was a historic occasion. Gehrig had played in a record 2,130 consecutive games. But there was something wrong, he could not move like he wanted, his body seemed to betray him. One month later at the Mayo Clinic, it was discovered Gehrig had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a disease that took on his name ever afterwards. He died just two years later.
4. A very happy day for Tiger fans. It was October 7, 1935, and the Tigers won their first-ever World Series. The final game ended in thrilling fashion. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, which Tiger's hit drove home Mickey Cochrane with the winning run?

Answer: Goose Goslin

In the top of the ninth with the score knotted at 3-3, the Cubs had a lead-off triple, but pitcher Tommy Bridges of the Tigers kept them from scoring, and wound up the winning pitcher in this game six finale.
5. July 8, 1941, Briggs Stadium was packed with 54,674 spectators as the American League scored four times in the last of the ninth to win one of the most exciting All-Star games in Major League history. Whose walk-off three-run blast into the upper deck won the game?

Answer: Ted Williams

Williams called it his most memorable home run ever. Next to Fenway Park in Boston, Ted played more games at Briggs Stadium than anywhere else (169). He did very well too. In 585 at-bats, he batted .330 with 55 home runs and 164 RBIs for his career in Detroit. Detroit fans revered 'Teddy Ballgame'.
6. On October 5, 1945, game three of the World Series was an unforgettable contest for Tiger fans. What happened on that date?

Answer: Claude Passeau of the Cubs hurled a one-hit shutout

It was one of the greatest games ever pitched in World Series play, Passeau was untouchable. The Tigers' only hit was a single to left by Rudy York in the bottom of the second. Passeau faced just 28 batters. A walk in the sixth inning was erased by a double play.

The Tigers would win this series in seven games. Due to war restrictions still in effect, the first three games of the series were in Detroit, the last four in Chicago, making Passeau's masterpiece the final game of the year at Briggs' Stadium.
7. June 24, 1962, was an exhausting and memorable day at Tiger Stadium. They played 22 innings in the first-ever seven-hour game in Major League history. Who beat the Tigers in that marathon?

Answer: New York Yankees

The Yankees jumped to a 7-3 lead in the second inning. The Tigers ended up tying it with three in the third and one in the sixth. The two teams then went scoreless until the 22nd inning when Jack Reed hit a two-run home run to give the Yankees the lead. It was the only home run of Reed's career.
8. In front of a packed house on July 19, 1968, Tommy Matchick hit a most improbable two-out, two-run home run off the facing of the upper deck in right field to beat the Orioles. What Baltimore pitcher was the victim?

Answer: Moe Drabowsky

Frank Robinson backed up against the fence, but the ball hit the over-hang in Tiger Stadium. This was just one of many late-inning heroics by the Tigers in their glorious year of 1968. Matchick would hit only three home runs that season, his rookie year, and only four total in his career.
9. It was August 11, 1968. The comeback kings of 1968 won both games of a doubleheader over Boston. Both times they won in their last at-bats, and both times the same player got the game-winning hit. Who was this super clutch hitter?

Answer: Gates Brown

The Gater really excelled as a pinch-hitter, and was especially good in clutch situations. He won the first game of the doubleheader with a two-out, pinch-hit walk-off home run in the last of the 14th. In the nightcap, the Tigers trailed 5-2 in the bottom of the ninth and they struggled back to win with Gates' single being the game winner.
10. The Tigers had it all in 1968, with pitcher Denny McLain winning the Cy Young and MVP Award. They defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series, four games to three. Which Tiger was the series MVP?

Answer: Mickey Lolich

McLain fell apart in the series, giving up 18 hits in 16 innings, and going 1-2. Lolich threw three complete winning games while striking out 21 Cardinals. Both Cash and Kaline also batted over .375.
