Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lanny told Scully and Mulder that he used to work in the carnival displaying his brother, Leonard, who lived on his stomach. Mr. Nutt had talked him out of it, saying that making a living displaying one's deformities had no dignity. What did Lanny do currently?

Answer: carry luggage

He was the porter at Mr. Nutt's hotel. There was some irony in Lanny leaving the carnival to become a luggage carrier for reasons of dignity, but it was lost on him because he was so drunk.
2. What did Lanny make a point of not implying Mr. Nutt's rooms had?

Answer: bedbugs

In parting, he initially told Scully and Mulder to not let the bedbugs bite, then doubled back to clarify that he didn't in any way mean to imply that they had bedbugs. He was very drunk and having trouble with his reasoning.
3. Running in the morning by the river, what did Mulder see The Conundrum eating?

Answer: fish

Mulder stopped to catch his breath and saw something thrashing about in the water. A tattooed man emerged with a fish in his mouth, and he squatted on the riverbank to bite into the live fish's flesh. When The Conundrum saw Mulder, he dropped the fish and ran off.
4. Waking from her first night in Gulf Breeze, what did Scully think she saw through her window?

Answer: man falling from roof

She sat up in bed and realized that the performers were simply practicing on a trampoline outside her window.
5. Scully and Mulder stopped to talk to Dr. Blockhead after seeing him escape from a straight jacket while hanging upside-down by his ankles. While they were talking, he hammered a nail where?

Answer: up his nose

He was explaining his talent to the agents and simultaneously displayed his craft by hammering a long nail up his nose. Mulder asked if he'd ever performed the trick on an audience member. Blockhead was appalled and said he warned his audiences against ever trying such a thing, saying that they would end up with a "slight lobotomy".
6. Discussing how he'd learned to manipulate his own body, Blockhead mentioned a protective Chinese practice by which a man can train his testicles to draw up into his abdomen. What did Mulder say in response?

Answer: "Oh, I'm doing that as we speak."

Mulder's only defense at that point seemed to be his dry sense of humor!
7. What did Blockhead offer to Scully for consumption?

Answer: cricket

First he fed The Conundrum, pouring a bunch of crickets into his mouth. Then he offered the insects to the agents. Scully took one from the jar and seemed to eat it, but walking away she showed Mulder that she'd used slight of hand learned from her amateur magician uncle to hide the cricket. Apparently, Gillian Anderson actually ate a live cricket while working on the episode when dared to do so by Jim Rose, the performer playing Dr. Blockhead.

She would have eaten a live cricket while filming the actual scene, but the production had already procured chocolate crickets and didn't want them to go to waste. (Thanks to tvtome.com for that info.)
8. Scully visited a museum of curiosities and the curator told her about Cheng and Eng, conjoined twins featured in the museum. What was Eng's cause of death, as determined by autopsy?

Answer: fright

Cheng had died first, of a cerebral hemorrhage. The curator described Eng's last few hours of life, emphasizing the dread he must have experienced knowing that half of his body was dead and his own death was imminent. Apparently, that dread killed him before natural causes could get to him.
9. What did the museum curator give Scully as an example of "gaffs"?

Answer: conjoined twins

The curator held up a picture of some conjoined twins and told her that they were not identical, as conjoined twins always are, and concluded that they were fakes, also known as gaffs. Scully asked if the Figi Mermaid was a gaff, but the curator just chuckled and changed the subject.
10. The museum curator told Scully about an "authentic P.T. Barnum exhibit" he'd just procured and offered to let her see it if she would do him two favors. The first favor was to tell no one of what she'd seen there. What was the second favor?

Answer: an additional donation of $5

Scully had already been compelled to donate to the museum when she'd first entered, and now she had to give another "donation" to see the special exhibit.
