Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you need help, this is the man that is in charge! Colonel Robert. E Hogan is the senior prisoner of war at the German Stalag 13 during World War 2. What branch of the United States military was Hogan a part of?

Answer: The Army Air Corps

Before he was captured by the Germans, Hogan was the American commander of the 504th Bomb group of the United States Army Air Corps. (This was the forerunner branch of the Army to the Air Force.) Hogan was captured by the Germans during an Allied air raid on Hamburg.

Hogan is often more than what meets the eye to most of the people he is around. Hogan is a brilliant officer and graduated third in his class at military school. He has highly elaborate plans, but with careful planning, he has almost always been successful. The men at Stalag 13 love him and are very loyal to him.
2. Although he is a prisoner, Hogan is not an idle man and uses his imprisonment as a way to help other prisoners of war escape back to the Allies. He schemes several elaborate missions with his fellow inmates to injure the German war efforts and keeps in contact with Allied headquarters. What is Hogan's code name when he broadcasts radio responses to the Allies?

Answer: Goldilocks

Hogan's codename is Goldilocks and the Allies headquarters' code name is Papa Bear, although it seems that this flips as the show goes on.

Hogan goes by many other names when he is on missions outside of the camp. When Hogan impersonates German soldiers or officers on his missions he usually transforms his name to include "Hogan" in it. "Hoganmuller", "Hoganmeister", "Hoganburg", and Hoganheimer" are a few of the names he has used.
3. Make way for Kommandant Klink! Colonel Klink prides himself on "there has never been a successful escape from Stalag 13"! However, Klink is clueless about the operation of Hogan and his men. Which of these is NOT true of Kommandant Klink?

Answer: He graduated at the top of his military class.

In contrast to Colonel Hogan, Klink seems to be everything Hogan is not. Klink originally wanted to go to medical school but failed his entrance exams and, with the help of his uncle, got into military school instead. Klink graduated 95th in his military class, while Hogan graduated in the top three of his military class. Klink is a veteran of World War I and the only one of his classmates who has not been promoted to general. (Although Hogan reminds him, most of his classmates have been killed in action or shot by Hitler.) Hogan easily persuades Klink to do whatever he wants by flattering Klink or holding Klink's hopes up of becoming famous one day. Hogan also gets Klink out of many troubles with his superior commanders.
4. Attention! Sergeant Schultz is an unusual friend to the prisoners of war! He usually knows more than he thinks about Hogan's plans when Hogan is smuggling prisoners and aiding the Allies' War effort. What is Sargent Schultz's job at Stalag 13?

Answer: He is a German soldier in charge of guarding the prisoners

Sergeant Schultz is a merry German soldier who guards the prisoners at Stalag 13. He often walks in on Hogan's plans and Hogan convinces him to turn his head in the other direction. When asked, Schultz usually replies "I know nothing!" On the side, Schultz loves food and can be easily bribed. Schultz is married and is the father of five children. He sometimes gets carried away with the men, alcohol, ladies, and gambling at Stalag 13.
5. Onward to Hogan's merry men! It looks like the prisoner lineup is just happening now for role call! Which of these men is Hogan's African-American comrade and his chief of staff?

Answer: James Kinchloe

Sargent Kinchloe, more commonly called "Kinch" by Hogan and his men, is Hogan's chief of staff and helps Hogan with his radio operations underground. When needed, Kinch does the best voice impression of Hitler over the telephone or radio. Kinch rarely gets a chance to go outside the camp to help Hogan but he organizes and helps Hogan's operations from inside the camp. Before the war, Kinch worked for the telephone company and was also a talented boxer.
6. You'll see this British fellow generally with a few cards! From pick-pocketing to tailoring, and don't forget some cards up his sleeve for some magic tricks, this man is a hand to Hogan's operations! Which of these is Hogan's loyal corporal from the Royal Air Force?

Answer: Peter Newkirk

Corporal Peter Newkirk is from the Royal Air Force and is Hogan's loyal British conman. Newkirk has a variety of skills that include pick-pocketing, safe-cracking, impersonations, accents, forging, card tricks, and tailoring! Newkirk designs many of the uniforms and disguises Hogan's men use when they are outside the camp (on Allied duty of course). Newkirk is an expert at hiding things or covering things up when the Germans have a surprise check and is a huge help to Hogan when he needs to break into places to get information. On the side, Newkirk loves being the entertainment with a few jokes and card tricks. When Kinch left the show, Newkirk replaced him as Hogan's second man.

The actor who played the part of Newkirk, Richard Dawson, originally tried out for the role of Hogan. Dawson was denied the part of Hogan because he did not sound American enough for the role. Dawson had fun though creating different accents for the character Newkirk. He stuck with the British Cockney accent instead of his original Liverpool accent because it would be more familiar to Americans. Dawson had a lot in common with his character because he had been an entertainer and comedian before his acting career.
7. You might not expect it at first, but hanging around this character could be a blast! Which one of Hogan's men is enthusiastic about blowing things up and is very skilled at bomb-making?

Answer: Andrew Carter

Sargent Andrew Carter is the team's talented chemist and bomb maker! Carter also is the main impersonator of Hitler out of Hogan's men. Carter is often not the most logical though and gets himself into trouble when he lacks common sense. Despite the times that he forgets the plan or messes things up accidentally, Hogan and his group still support him. Carter is very friendly and is always eager for the next plan of action!
8. Viva la France! We can't forget Hogan's loyal French man, Corporal Louie LeBeau! He may be small but he is a master of many things! Which of these is NOT one way he helps Hogan?

Answer: He tailors outfits for the Nazis and disguises for the prisoners

LeBeau is a cook, an excellent undercover man, and an animal caretaker, but he is not a tailor. LeBeau often is seen cooking for the men and loves to admire his creations. LeBeau is usually the biggest romantic out of Hogan's men and loves to entertain women! He is the most patriotic of the men and proudly proclaims his loyalty to France. Klink and Schultz frequently annoy LeBeau by calling him "cockroach".
9. Hogan's schemes and Klink's incompetence often get Klink into trouble with higher-ranking officers. It looks like one of these men is yelling at him now! Which of these men is directly over Klink and his operation of Stalag 13?

Answer: General Burkhalter

General Burkhalter is a big man who likes to get directly to the point. He is often annoyed by Klink's incompetency and small talk. He does though bail Klink out from time to time with other officers and has even been helped by Hogan on at least one occasion. Burkhalter does get fed up with Klink and threatens to remove him as camp Kommandant multiple times. Klink always reminds him though of his outstanding record that there has "never been an escape from Stalag 13".

Despite Burkhalter's disputes with Klink, Burkhalter almost has Klink as a brother-in-law. Burkhalter tries to get Klink to marry his sister, but Klink is scared to death of Frau Gertrude Linkmeyer, who is neither attractive nor friendly. Thanks to Hogan, the two never get married.
10. We have a visitor! The success of Hogan's missions draws suspicion from many German officers. One Gestapo officer in particular has had many run-ins with Hogan but never is very successful. It looks like he is back again! Which one of these German officers is a major in the Gestapo who frequently visits Stalag 13 and is known for yelling "Who is this man?"?

Answer: Wolfgang Hochstetter

Major Hochstetter is small, but he is known for his ability to yell and put fear into Klink. He tries on many unsuccessful attempts to frame Hogan and his men, but Hogan usually finds a way to use it to his own advantage. Major Hochstetter is frequently annoyed by Hogan's liberty to barge into Klink's office when he wants and interrupt his agenda, causing Major Hochstetter to lose his temper. Major Hochstetter often yells at Klink, "Who is this man?" and "Baah!" when Hogan outmatches him.
11. Hogan has been known to linger outside Klink's office when Klink is being visited by his superiors. Who is the lovely young blond lady outside of Klink's office that Hogan frequently bribes or flatters to get information or favors from?

Answer: Klink's secretary

Klink's secretary was played by two different ladies over the course of the show. Cynthia Lynn played Klink's secretary, Frauline Helga, from 1965 to 1966. She only stayed as an actress for the show for the first season but made individual appearances in other episodes.

After she left, the name of Klink's secretary was changed to Frauline Hilda and she was played by Sigrid Valdis. Sigrid played the role until the show's end and eventually married Bob Crane, the actor who played Hogan. The couple was married on the set of "Hogan's Heroes" on October 16, 1970 and their marriage lasted eight years. Sigrid retired from acting after the birth of their son.
12. Hogan and his men are known for impersonating German officials. Their favorite one to do is Hitler! Which one of Hogan's men usually does not usually do any impressions in person?

Answer: Kinchloe

Kinchloe does not do any impressions in person because he is African-American. He does however do several voice impressions of Hitler and other officers over the phone. Newkirk also does very good impressions over the phone as German officers. Carter is usually the most used for the impressions of Hitler because of his hair and his figure. LeBeau is often used as a sidekick by Hogan when the two do impressions together.

However, LeBeau does get himself into trouble when he is tempted to call German officers names.
13. Uh oh! Looks like one of Hogan's men is being punished! Don't worry though, Hogan and his men will get him out of trouble soon! What is the nickname of the jail cell where the prisoners commonly get sent to be disciplined?

Answer: the cooler

The cooler is the jail cell where Klink commonly sends prisoners to discipline them for attempted escapes. Hogan usually gets his own men out because most escape attempts are cover-ups for their operations of smuggling soldiers in and out of camp. Klink rarely uses the cooler for minor offenses but has been known to send a man once or twice to the cooler for disrespect.
14. Most of Hogan's operations are made possible by the elaborate tunnel system he and his men have made! Which of these is not one of the main entrances or exits in Hogan's tunnel system?

Answer: Klink's office

Although Hogan and his men have a tunnel that leads to every building, Klink's office is not one of the main entrances he and his men use. The main entrance is in Hogan's barracks underneath the foot locker. Hogan and his men use the tree stump and the dog house as entrances to get in and out of Stalag 13.

The tree stump is never noticed because it is in the middle of the woods. Once, Carter even lost his way back because he forgot which stump was the right one! The dog house is also another entrance Hogan and his men often use for smuggling Allied soldiers in and out of camp! They usually wait for the dog master to change the dogs, then will sneak their guest out to the dog truck! Looks like it's time for another man to go now!
15. What was the name of "Hogan's Heroes" theme song that was compiled by Jerry Feilding?

Answer: Hogan's Heroes March

"Hogan's Heroes March" was the theme song of the show. It was compiled by Jerry Fielding. The song had lyrics but they were never formally sung on the show:

"Heroes, heroes, husky men of war,
Sons of all the heroes, of the war before.
We're all heroes up to our ear o's
You ask questions
We make suggestions
That's what we're heroes for.

All good heroes love a good, big fight
Open up the bomb bays and brighten up the night.
We applaud the people who laud us,
You pull the roses,
We punch the noses,
That's what we're heroes for.

What's a hero do?
Well, we're not gonna tell ya
Cause we wish we knew.
That's why we heroes are so few.
We've got a slogan
From Colonel Hogan
And Colonel Hogan's a hero too.

Never flinch, boys, never be afraid,
Heroes are not born, boys, heroes are made.
Ask not why, boys, never say die, boys,
Answer the call, remember we'll all be heroes forever more!"

Bob Crane, who is the actor that plays Hogan, played the drums to
the theme song on the show!
