Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The dominant species inhabiting this small blue planet is the Clanger. What is the main colouration of Clangers?

Answer: Pink

There appears to be only one species of Clanger inhabiting the planet. They have long sensitive noses, and skin with the texture of knitted wool. They communicate by means of a complex series of whistling notes.
2. Does the Clangers' planet have any form of natural precipitation?

Answer: Yes

Meteorologists studying the planet have observed that precipitation in the form of rain comes from a single cloud, whose white cotton-wool-like appearance corresponds more or less to a terrestrial cumulus (or possibly cumulo-nimbus) formation.
3. What is the name given to the "alpha male" of the Clanger tribe?

Answer: Major Clanger

Although he has a military rank, and wears a form of armour constructed of metal plates, Major Clanger appears to be the only member of the Clanger Armed Forces. Scientists believe that the armour serves primarily as protection from objects falling to the planet from space.
4. Another creature inhabiting the Clangers' planet is a type of fowl apparently formed of pieces of scrap metal. What avian species is this?

Answer: Iron Chicken

The Iron Chicken lives in a metal nest floating in the sky above the planet. It may be presumed to be female, since it once laid an egg, out of which hatched (unsurprisingly) an Iron Chick.
5. An occasional migrant visitor to the Clangers' planet is a large blue creature known as a Skymoo. How do Skymoos travel through space?

Answer: Flying, using their large ears as wings

The Skymoos came to the rescue when the Clangers' planet was overrun with a rampant plant growth. Being naturally herbivorous, they helpfully devoured every scrap of the plant before flying back to their own planet.
6. What two naturally-occurring items appear to form the staple diet of the Clangers?

Answer: Blue string pudding and green soup

The green soup is harvested from vast underground reserves beneath the surface of the planet. The blue string grows on trees on the surface, and is made into pudding by the dominant female of the family, Mother Clanger. Clangers have also been observed eating a sweet substance known as glow-honey, but this seems to be an occasional treat than an integral part of their diet.
7. Botanists will be interested to study the music tree that grows on the surface of the planet. The fruit of this tree (in the form of musical notes) is used by the Clangers for which of the following?

Answer: As a source of power for their flying-machine

The tree grew from musical notes that somewhat surprisingly "hatched" from an egg laid by the Iron Chicken. The Chicken will eat the notes given half a chance, but the Clangers prefer to make other use of them.
8. Clangers seem to have a semi-symbiotic relationship with a creature that lives in proximity to the underground Green Soup reserves. What animal is this?

Answer: Soup Dragon

The Soup Dragon provides the Clangers with supplies of Green Soup, in exchange (scientists believe) for protection and friendship. Thought for a long time to be a solitary individual, the Soup Dragon one day laid an egg (one assumes by a form of asexual reproduction), from which hatched a juvenile of the species.
9. What form of creature provides both light and occasional food for the Clangers?

Answer: Glow-buzzers

Glow-buzzers are a cross between terrestrial bees and glow-worms. The Clangers don't actually eat the glow-buzzers themselves, but keep them in little lantern hives, in which they make edible glow-honey.
10. The Clangers' planet also supports an apparently indigenous population of small orange bipeds with large eyes and bushy eyebrows. What species is this?

Answer: Froglet

Froglets are smaller than Clangers, and live in caves beneath the surface of the planet (although they have occasionally been observed nesting in a top hat).
