Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who or what spent the night in the jail cell next to George Hearst?

Answer: A dead man

Deputy Sheriff Charlie Utter taunted the jailed mining magnate, and revealed in the adjoining cell a dead man with a knife protruding from his chest. The dead man was a mining union organizer, and Hearst was suspected of either killing the man, or paying someone to do so.
2. Who interrupted Martha and Seth Bullock's breakfast?

Answer: Al Swearengen

Swearengen could not wait to question Bullock about his jailing of George Hearst. Swearengen commented, "we who will be his wrath's object ought keep close and confide. Our alternative is flight." The men decided to stay and fight.
3. Aunt Lou's son arrived in Deadwood. What was his name?

Answer: Odell

Aunt Lou was happy to see her son, but later questioned how he could have found her as there was insufficient time for her last letter to have reached him in Liberia. She later surmised that Hearst had sent for him, and was most distraught about it.
4. Who assisted the General in building a coffin?

Answer: Jane

Jane and the General had become drinking buddies before the General fled town with Hostetler after their runaway horse killed the young Bullock boy. After Hostetler's suicide, the General and Jane were the only ones around to take care of his burial arrangements.
5. Cy Tolliver was delighted to learn that his employee Leon was supplying Alma Ellsworth with dope, and they discussed methods to kill Alma with an overdose. Why was Leon reluctant to participate in Alma's murder?

Answer: He feared Tolliver would kill him afterwards

Leon opined, "Once the bank lady dies of an overdose...I get a bullet in my ear."
6. Who put a gun to Leon's head?

Answer: Trixie

The tough former prostitute-turned-bank-teller truly cared for her new employer, and threatened to blow Leon's head off if he continued to supply drugs to Alma. Leon replied that he was no longer Alma's source for drugs.
7. Who did Cy Tolliver hire to keep an eye on Hearst's whereabouts?

Answer: E.B.

Hearst resided in the hotel that he purchased from E.B. Farnum, who remained as the manager. Tolliver gave E.B. $200 in advance to be advised of Hearst's activities. E.B immediately takes the money to Swearengen, whom E.B. presumed was testing his loyalty. E.B. begged Swearengen, "Save us, think of something." Swearengen replied, "Have I ever not?"
8. What happened after Trixie confronted Alma about her drug use?

Answer: Alma fired Trixie

After her dismissal as the bank's teller, Trixie returned to the Gem Saloon and told Swearengen, her former lover/employer, that she wouldn't mind turning a trick. Swearengen told her to get out, adding, "I lack patience with ***** too ignorant to know when their lot's improved."
9. Why did Swearengen want to send Dan Dority to Cheyenne?

Answer: To recruit hired guns

Swearengen decided to cancel Dority's trip after he and Bullock agreed that a first strike against George Hearst was in their best interests. Swearengen commented, "We'll collect the camp elders, be baffled among friends."
10. Who shared a drink from Calamity Jane's bottle of whiskey?

Answer: Aunt Lou

As Jane and Fields returned from burying Hostetler, Aunt Lou approached them and sought Fields' assistance in convincing her son Odell to leave town. She feared that Odell was involved in some scheme with George Hearst, and Lou gave Fields $742 to offer her son as incentive to leave. While Fields was off on his mission, Jane and Aunt Lou shared a drink.
