Al Swearengen had been laying low since his savage beating at the hands of George Hearst and his henchman. While Al nursed his badly injured hand, he continued to plan his revenge against the mining magnate.
2. Wu, the head of the Chinese community, returned to Deadwood on a stagecoach dressed up in a suit and hat. What did Wu do while in San Francisco?

Answer: Recruited laborers

Although Swearengen noted that Wu had learned a new word or two in English, Wu's primary mission had been to recruit Chinese laborers to work for Hearst in the gold mines. Swearengen and Wu are able to communicate quite well in a strange combination of sign language and pictures, something Swearengen plans to use to his advantage when he acts as interpreter between Wu and Hearst.
