Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On the morning of Election Day, George Hearst was rudely awakened by someone pounding on his door. Who was brave enough to disturb the sleeping mining magnate?

Answer: Charlie Utter

A contemptuous Utter announced that a coffin with a body had arrived at Utter's freight office with Hearst's name on it. Charlie boldly advised Hearst that he did not like his tone of voice and that he'd better change it before they meet again.
2. From his newly constructed stage Langrishe delivered a moving soliloquy on the tense state of affairs in Deadwood. Who was the only person listening to the actor as he vented his emotions?

Answer: Claudia

With the growing tensions between the 'murderous' George Hearst and his 'friend' Al Swearengen, Langrishe decided to cancel the opening performance of his acting troupe.
3. After Alma reluctantly sold her mining claim to Hearst, she insulted him by demanding that the payment be immediate, and in gold be delivered to her bank. To add further insult, what offensive word did Bullock call Hearst?

Answer: Bully

Bullock fumed during the entire document signing session, and when Hearst commented on Alma's fragrance as she left, Bullock snarled, "Can't shut up. Every bully I ever met can't shut his (expletive deleted) mouth".
4. E.B. Farnum was summoned to Hearst's room and given a note to deliver to Swearengen. Whose death did Hearst demand?

Answer: Trixie

Hearst insisted on revenge against the "whore who shot me". Because of his close friendship with Trixie, Swearengen decided to kill another one of his prostitutes that looked like Trixie. Of course, Al made the messenger E.B. think that it was E.B. who was going to be killed.
5. Trixie dressed to go out in public and told Sol Star that she was not afraid to die. What did Sol do?

Answer: Threw her out

As he flung Trixie out the door, Sol added, "At least I can say I threw you out, if you'd rather die than live with me." As Sol sat down and began to sob, Trixie knocked at the door and they soon fell weeping into each other's arms.
6. Who murdered Jen?

Answer: Swearengen

Swearengen dispatched Johnny Burns to kill Jen, who unfortunately bore a striking resemblance to Trixie. It was hoped that Hearst was too busy looking at Trixie's naked body when she shot him that he would believe that the dead Jen was the shooter. Johnny was fond of Jen and unable to perform the deed, which his boss performed in his usual business-like manner.
7. How many gunmen did Hawkeye actually deliver to Deadwood?

Answer: 18

When an angry Silas Adams questioned the intoxicated Hawkeye, he claimed that he brought seventeen and a half men, and camped them outside Deadwood. One of the men was apparently a midget. Hawkeye's men were to combine forces with Wu's men to offset George Hearst's private army of Pinkerton men.
8. What job did the departing George Hearst offer to Cy Tolliver?

Answer: Quartermaster

Tolliver was infuriated when offered a lowly position by Hearst, and took out his rage on Janine, whom he called 'Stupid', and his sniveling dope-addict lackey Leon. In a rampage Tolliver stabbed Leon to death and put a pistol to Janine's head.
9. Al Swearengen could always observe what was happening on the streets of Deadwood from his second story balcony atop the Gem Saloon. After George Hearst arrived and purchased the Grand Central Hotel across the street, he had a hole knocked in the wall of his second floor room so he could have a similar vantage point. As Hearst rode out of town on the stagecoach, who poked his head out of the hole in the wall and walked out onto the veranda?

Answer: E.B. Farnum

Farnum had sold his hotel to Hearst for $100,000. Despite his new found wealth, Farnum remained as the manager of the hotel. After having suffered long-term and constant abuse from his employer, E.B. regained his courage as Hearst's stagecoach left town.
10. The episode and series ended with Al Swearengen performing what familiar act?

Answer: Scrubbing the floor

Al insisted on cleaning up Jen's blood from the floor of his office. After telling a grieving Johnny Burns that he was "gentle as I was able", he muttered to himself, "Wants me to tell him something pretty." I would like to thank the remaining few "Deadwood" quiz takers for their three seasons of fan loyalty.

Although HBO abruptly cancelled the critically acclaimed series without any closure to the on-going story, they have promised two feature films in the future to wrap things up. I'm not holding my breath, but will believe it, and make quizzes when I see it.
