Odell claimed to be the first deacon of his Baptist church in Liberia. A very suspicious Hearst doubted the ore sample and assay report that he was given causing an insulted Odell to abruptly call an end to the meeting. Hearst was able to calm Odell, on whom Hearst detected the smell of liquor.
