Tom was watching slides in his bedroom when all of the children (except David) came to ask Tom a question. He thought they had gathered to ask him to apologize to David for the fight he and David had, and launched into a tirade about how he was the father and wouldn't apologize. Enlarging the bedroom seems a bit odd to me as the bedroom was already quite large - it had a sitting area, make-up area and its own bathroom already.
