"Eight is Enough" - "Yes Nicholas..." Part I Quiz

David and his girlfriend, Noreen, planned on spending Christmas Eve with the Bradfords and then driving to Monterey during the night so they could spend all Christmas day with Noreen's family.

When David and Noreen first tried leaving, they had a flat. Then they were on the road when they remembered the presents for Noreen's family... which were left in the Bradford living room. David and Noreen drove back to the Bradford house to pick up the presents and decided they were too tired to drive, so they both slept out on the sun porch. Then in the morning, the pair was getting ready to leave and just needed to get the gifts out of the living room... which they weren't allowed to enter until they had some orange juice. (The Bradford family tradition was no going into the living room, where the tree and gifts were, until everyone had some fresh orange juice on Christmas morning.) Then, when they went into the living room, they discovered that someone had stolen all the gifts... and the sedan and the station wagon, leaving only Abby's little car for the family. Plus, Susan was missing. The police asked David to stay as his car might be needed to find Susan or pick up the gifts.

Noreen was quite put out about the whole thing and had a bad attitude, even after finding out the family had been robbed.

Mary was still sulking about not getting into medical school. She and Joanie thought everyone was staying home on Christmas Eve, so they didn't get dates, although they claimed they could have.

Nancy had a date with the sweetest guy in Sacramento and didn't want to risk losing him by asking for favours for her sisters.

Susan's date came down with the measles and she kept begging Nancy to ask her date to find someone for herself.

Answer: Everyone makes a dish

Nicholas went into the kitchen and saw Abby working on preparing the meal for the next day. He explained to her that they traditionally each make a dish and last year they had 8 desserts, pizza, and an alf alfa salad.

Answer: Mary and Joanie

The first scene of the episode is Mary and Joanie pulling up with the tree in the back of the station wagon. Mary turned off the car and Joanie complained that Mary should have waited until the Christmas song that was playing was over. Mary said she had had enough of Christmas music.

Mary and Joanie then hid the tree from Nicholas.

Answer: It was her first Christmas with everyone

Abby told Tom that she had been looking forward to her first Christmas with everyone and had planned on everyone being there to trim the tree, go caroling, drink eggnog, and even having an open house for all the Bradford friends and family. Tom asked if she had done all that when she was married to Frank. Abby replied that she and Frank would go to her parents' house in Pasadena and have Christmas there. And after Frank died, it hadn't felt right to go see her parents, so she just moped around with a few other single friends.

After Tom heard all this, he decided that no one would be allowed to leave Christmas Eve until they'd all eaten, trimmed the tree and drank eggnog.

Joanie and Mary complained that they could have had dates that night, but thought everyone was staying home. The scene then cuts to the living room where Tom and Abby were trying to kiss, but keep hearing dishes breaking form the kitchen. Abby decides the pair should go upstairs where it was quieter.

Nicholas was complaining that his sock was too small so he wouldn't get as many gifts as everyone else. Abby was too busy making dinner to help and Tom was too busy writing his column. But Tom suggested Nicholas use the shoe stretcher. Nicholas asked Tommy for help, but Tommy was busy moping around. Tommy did suggest Nicholas just use two socks and maybe Santa couldn't read the names on the socks.

Answer: Susan

Susan had gone out on a double date with Nancy, but Susan and her date went to midnight mass without Nancy and her date. Susan said she and her date, Harold, would walk home. Susan and Harold did make it home to the Bradford house, but only so Susan could take the family sedan - without telling anyone. But when the family woke up in the morning, Susan wasn't there.

Tommy came home at 1AM - an hour after his curfew. When Tom caught him, Tommy said not being mad was Tom's Christmas present to Tommy.

When Tom went back to bed, he mentioned to Abby that Susan and Nancy still weren't home. She said not worrying about them would be his Christmas present to them, unknowingly echoing Tommy's statement.

Answer: Harold

Nancy's date had a cousin, Harold, who was in town - and without a date. So Harold came to the house, saw Noreen at the door, immediately thought Noreen was his date, and kissed Noreen. Mary then introduced herself and Harold tried to kiss her as well.

Answer: Mother Superior

Harold was finally told which was Susan, and he declared that Susan was the prettiest one. Abby walked into the foyer just then and Harold said he knew she wasn't Susan, but which sister was she? Abby decided to introduce herself as the mother superior, owing to the fact the foyer was filled with girls.

Answer: Nicholas

Nicholas woke up from the noise 'Santa' was making in the living room. He ran downstairs and saw the man putting the gifts *into* a sack and asked what was going on. The man claimed he was just looking for something and let Nicholas to believe he was Santa Claus. To explain why he wasn't wearing the red suit, 'Santa' said he hadn't had time to get it from the cleaners. Nicholas was worried that 'Santa' was taking all the gifts as punishment because Nicholas had seen Santa. Nicholas eventually went to bed, reassured the gifts would still be there.

Nancy then came home (saying the word 'terrific' every two seconds) and almost saw 'Santa', but closed the door to the living room before he was seen.

Susan came home with Harold to get the keys form the car. She almost went into the living room to find the extra set, but Harold found the keys on the floor in the foyer.

David and Noreen never attempted to go into the living room where 'Santa' was - they were both too tired and just wanted to sleep.

Answer: New Year's

Tom was furiously trying to write his New Year's column on Christmas Eve. This confused Nicholas, who believed he should be writing his Christmas column on Christmas Eve. Tom explained that the Christmas column was already written and was in the paper from that morning.

Answer: Framed column

Donna came to the house and dropped off a gift for Tom - she had his Christmas column perma-plaqued so he could hang it up. Tom didn't look too thrilled and he was asked if he'd rather have gotten a tie. Tom's reply was "What colour?" Joanie then began to read the column that was on the plaque, and the scene cut to 'Santa Claus', played by "The Waltons" star Will Greer, reading the column about all the things the Bradfords had (such as televisions, cars, large yard, etc.).

Answer: Nicholas's art

Nicholas had made some art for everyone that was a picture with a stick at the top and bottom to make the art look like a scroll. While 'Santa' was going through all the gifts, he threw Nicholas's gifts to the side so he could take the better stuff. 'Santa' then went into the driveway and stole the Bradfords' station wagon, after loading the gifts inside.

No one noticed the cars (the sedan that Susan had taken and the station wagon) were missing until the police officers mentioned the only cars they saw were Abby's MG and David's van.

Nicholas was upset that 'Santa' had taken everything, but left Nicholas's art and thought his gifts weren't good because they hadn't been taken. Abby tried to reassure Nicholas that any Santa who thought Nicholas's gifts weren't good must be an impostor and asked for the older police officer to agree with her. But that police officer as Jewish, so he said he didn't know much about Santa. (Although he wished he celebrated Christmas because then he could get Christmas off for once.)

Nicholas was also upset because he thought the theft was his fault. He thought that Santa was punishing him for having seen Santa.

Nancy was flirting with the younger officer, whose name was Craig.
