Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Here is a question about a show that was an oldie but a goodie. Running from 1962-1982, this hospital soap opera show featured James Pritchett, Elizabeth Hubbard and Ann Williams. What was the title of this show?

Answer: The Doctors

"The Doctors" (1963-1982) aired on NBC and was set in the fictional town of Madison (no state - somewhere in New England) at Hope Memorial Hospital. The show premiered the same day as "General Hospital" (1963-2010), and it was considered to have far more racier plots than "General Hospital" (1963-2010).

James Pritchett played Chief of Staff Matthew Powers. Ann Williams portrayed Dr. Maggie Fielding Van Allen Powers and Elizabeth Hubbard starred as Dr. Althea Davis. "The Doctors" won the Daytime Emmy Award for Best Drama in 1972 and 1974.

Almost more notable than its permanent cast members were the now famous actors that were guests on the show. The list included Armand Assante, Julia Duffy, Jonathan Frakes, Alec Baldwin and Kathy Bates.
2. Now let's fast forward to a show that debuted in 2009. Included in the cast were Taylor Schilling, James Tupper and Michele Trachtenberg. What was the title of this show?

Answer: Mercy

"Mercy" made its prime time premiere September 23, 2009 on NBC. It told the story of a nurse, Veronica Callahan (Taylor Schilling), who had recently returned from a tour of duty in Iraq.

While in Iraq, Nurse Callahan fell in love with Dr. Chris Sands (James Tupper). To complicate life, Dr. Sands had followed Veronica to Mercy Hospital in New Jersey, not knowing that Veronica was already married.

Michele Trachtenberg played Chloe Payne, a new nurse at the hospital. Because of her last name, there were recurring jokes on the pun of pain/payne.
3. In 1968, a medical show debuted that broke down some racial stereotypes. The cast included Diahann Carroll, Marc Copage and Lloyd Nolan. What was the name of this ground breaking show?

Answer: Julia

"Julia" (1968-1971) not only brought the first African American female to star status on a prime time television show, but it also showed a single mother raising a child on her own. Diahann Carroll played the lead character, Julia Baker, who worked in a doctor's office (Dr. Morton Chegley - Lloyd Nolan). Marc Copage portrayed Julia's son, Corey.

In addition to the cast members listed above, both Paul Winfield and Fred Williamson appeared as potential romantic possibilities for Julia.

Diahann Carroll won a Golden Globe Award in 1970 for Best TV Star - female. The show, meant to be a light sitcom, was often criticized for not being more serious and not addressing political problems of the day.
4. Another soap opera/doctor drama had actors such as Leslie Charleson, Jason Cook and Jacklyn Zeman. What long running soap opera was this?

Answer: General Hospital

"General Hospital" (1963-????) began life as a thirty minute drama on ABC. At first it was increased to forty-five minutes in length and finally to an hour format. Leslie Charleson (Dr. Monica Quartermaine), Jason Cook (Dr. Matt Hunter) and Jacklyn Zeman (Nurse Barbara Jean "Bobbie" Spencer) all worked at the fictional General Hospital (also known as GH) in Port Charles, New York.

Throughout the course of the show, it won numerous awards. In additional to its regular cast, several young actors, such as Richard Dean Anderson, Tyne Daly, Demi Moore and Amber Tamblyn, began their acting careers on General Hospital. It was also interesting to note that several celebrity guest stars appeared on the show including Elizabeth Taylor, Sammy Davis, Jr., John Stamos, Leonard Nimoy and James Franco.
5. Set during a recent war, this series highlighted the acting abilities of Alan Alda, Mike Farrell and McLean Stevenson. And the title was _____.

Answer: M*A*S*H

"M*A*S*H" (or Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) ran on CBS from 1972-1983. The dramedy was based on the movie "M*A*S*H" (1970). The show told the story of a set of unhappy, yet dedicated medical professionals working to save the lives of injured soldiers during the Korean War.

Alan Alda played Dr. Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce, Mike Farrell portrayed Dr. B.J. Hunnicutt and McLean Stevenson starred as Colonel Henry Braymore Blake. Several other notable cast members included Loretta Switt (Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan), Gary Burghoff (Walter Eugene "Radar" O'Reilly) and William Christopher (Father John Patrick Francis Mulcahy).

In its eleven year run, the show received fifteen awards. It also placed in the top ten of shows for nine of the eleven years that it was on television. Its final episode, "Goodbye, Farewell, Amen" (February 28, 1983) had the distinction of becoming the most watched episode in United States television history.
6. Here is another vintage show for you to consider. Running from 1969 until 1973, this medical drama starred E.G. Marshall, David Hartman and John Saxon. What was the title of this show?

Answer: The Bold Ones: The New Doctors

"The Bold Ones: The New Doctors" (1969-1973) was part of a "wheel format series". Each week, a different set of "bold" ones was presented to the viewing audience. "The New Doctors" segment was the most popular, lasting four seasons. Other segments included "The Lawyers" (1969-1972), "The Protectors" (1969-1970) and "The Senators" (1970).

E.G. Marshall as Dr. David Craig ran his own exclusive clinic to find a diagnosis for difficult cases, not unlike the series "House" (2004-2010). Assisting him were Dr. Ted Stuart (John Saxon) and Dr. Paul Hunter (David Hartman).
7. Sometimes, medical shows can be short lived. Lasting less than one season, this show had excellent performances by Alfre Woodard, Daniel Henney and Alex O'Loughlin. What was the name of this show?

Answer: Three Rivers

"Three Rivers" (2009) aired a handful of episodes before it was cancelled by CBS. Set in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (where the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers meet to form the Ohio River, hence "three" rivers), Alex O'Loughlin as Dr. Andy Yablonski worked tirelessly to find and to affect organ transplants for his patients. Helping him were Alfre Woodard as Dr. Sophia Jordan and Daniel Henney as Dr. David Lee.

In one particular episode, "The Luckiest Man" (November 8, 2009), Mandy Patinkin turned in an Emmy award winning performance as a man who wanted to be taken off life support so that he could donate his organs.
8. Another short but sweet doctor drama starred Jonathan Cake, Ming-Na and Angie Harmon. What was the name of this promising show?

Answer: Inconceivable

"Inconceivable" (2005) starred Jonathan Cake as Dr. Malcolm Bowers, Ming-Na as attorney Rachel Lu and Angie Harmon as Dr. Nora Campbell. Set in San Francisco at the fictional Family Options Clinic, the show presented both the professional as well as the personal lives of a group of doctors, lawyers and psychologists working together to help infertile couples.

The show only aired two episodes. Most critics found the drama promising, but the Writers' Guild of America strike that year was has been cited as the probable cause of its demise.
9. A bit of a twist on television doctor shows featured Dylan Walsh, Julian McMahon and Joely Richardson. What was the title of this often eccentric television show?

Answer: Nip/Tuck

"Nip/Tuck" (2003-2010) told the story of two plastic surgeons (Dylan Walsh as Dr. Sean McNamara and Julian McMahon as Dr. Christian Troy) who shared a practice together in Miami, Florida for the first four seasons of the show and then moved onto Los Angeles, California for the last three. Joely Richardson starred as Julia McNamara, Dr. McNamara's wife. As much as they were able to improve the lives of some of their patients, their own lives often needed some "surgery" of its own.

Aired on FX network, the show was often in "hot water" with watchdog groups because of its extensive use of graphic surgical procedures, over-the-top violence and excessive sex. "Nip/Tuck" did win one Golden Globe Award in 2005 for Best Drama on Television.

Numerous celebrities appeared on the show as guests including Sharon Gless, Rosie O'Donnell and Vanessa Redgrave, who, in real life, was the mother of Joely Richardson.
10. This show featured a very young doctor. Characters in this dramedy included Neil Patrick Harris, James Sikking and Lawrence Pressman. Can you name this television show?

Answer: Doogie Howser, MD

"Doogie Howser, MD" (1989-1993) told the story of Neil Patrick Harris as Dr. Douglas "Doogie" Howser who was the youngest person ever to earn a medical license. An extremely intelligent young man, Doogie received a perfect SAT score at age six, completed high school in nine weeks, graduated from Princeton at the age of ten and finished medical school when he was fourteen.

The series began on Doogie's sixteenth birthday. While waiting in line to get his driver's license, Doogie witnessed an accident and came to the aid of the injured passengers. Although Dougie is a medical doctor, he was also a teenager with all the emotional package that comes with it. The story usually ended with Doogie writing in his diary on his computer, reflecting on the day's events as well as his own feelings.

James Sikking played Doogie's father, Dr. David Howser and Lawrence Pressman portrayed Dr. Benjamin Canfield, Doogie's boss at the hospital.
