David Rose is one of the main characters on the Canadian sitcom "Schitt's Creek." David identifies as pansexual and states that he is attracted to another person regardless of their gender or biological sex. In the show, David has a brief romantic relationship with one of the female characters before becoming engaged to a man he meets.

The hilarious show ran from 2015 to 2020 and follows the Rose family, a once wealthy and dysfunctional family who lose everything except a small town they once bought as a joke.

The show was created by father/son Eugene Levy and Dan Levy and won a number of awards. At the 2020 Emmys, the TV show became the first ever to sweep the four acting categories. It also won Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) awards in 2020 and 2021 for best LGBT-related television series. Dan Levy has avoided putting a specific label on his sexuality but did come out as gay in 2020 in an interview with Andy Cohen.
2. Rosa Diaz

Rosa Diaz is a character on the sitcom "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" about a team of detectives. Rosa is known for being no-nonsense, intimidating, and tough. In the fifth season of the show, she comes out as bisexual to her colleagues and enlists the help of a peer to tell her parents as she is unsure how they will react. Actress Stephanie Beatriz, who plays Rosa Diaz, is also bisexual. "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" has been nominated seven times for a Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) award for outstanding comedy series and won in 2018.

The police captain on the show, Raymond Holt (played by Andre Braugher), is an openly gay man who has faced discrimination for the color of his skin and his sexuality. As a police captain, he is strict, robotic and humorless.
3. Mitchell Pritchett

The comedy "Modern Family" has been nominated ten times for a Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) award for outstanding comedy series and has won twice. The show is about three different families in Los Angeles who are linked by Jay Pritchett.

The show is filmed in a mockumentary style, with characters making confessionals for the camera. Mitchell Pritchett is the son of Jay Pritchett and married to Cameron Tucker. They have two adopted children together, Lily and Rexford. In 2012, actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson (who plays Mitchell) and his husband Justin Mikita started a not for profit called "Tie the Knot" in an effort to raise funds for same-sex marriage across the United States.
4. Ronald "Mac" McDonald

In May 2020, the American sitcom "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" was renewed for a fifteenth season, making it the longest running sitcom on American TV. The show is about an unlikeable group of five people who run a bar together. The character Mac (whose name is Ronald McDonald) is a Catholic with a gritty imprisoned father with whom he has a strained relationship. Mac fights his feelings of homosexuality for years although the rest of the gang are always insinuating that he is gay.

He finally comes out of the closet in the eleventh season. Rob McElhenney, who plays Mac and is the co-creator and one of the writers of the show, is no stranger to the gay community.

When he was eight, his parents divorced when his mother came out as a lesbian and he has two gay brothers.
5. Sophia Burset

Sophia Burset is an inmate on the show "Orange is the New Black." The show is a comedy-drama based on the memoirs of Piper Chapman, who spent time in a federal prison. Burset is a transgender lesbian and is one of the first trans characters on TV to have a major role.

She is played by Laverne Cox who is a transgender actress who rose to prominence through this role. She was nominated for an Emmy for her role on the show, making her the first trans actress to be nominated for an Emmy award in any category.

The show "Orange is the New Black" has been nominated three times for a Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) award.
6. Todd Grimshaw (originally)

Todd Grimshaw is a character on the long running British soap "Coronation Street." The character was originally played by Bruno Langley (from 2001 to 2017) however his contract was not renewed and the character is now played by Gareth Pierce. Todd was the first openly gay character on the show and generated quite a bit of coverage in the media. Todd was in a relationship with a couple of female characters, controversially losing his virginity to one at the age of sixteen.

He came out as gay in 2003 when he kissed a character named Nick, who did not reciprocate.

The kiss was watched by approximately fourteen million viewers. Another scene with Todd was filmed in Manchester's Gay Village and as Nick kissed another male character, a crowd of onlookers who were watching the filming cheered.
7. Tara Chambler

Tara Chambler is one of the survivors on the American drama series "The Walking Dead" about a group of people trying to survive a zombie apocalypse. Tara was once a member of an enemy group but is a compassionate and tough character who has been accepted into the larger group, led by Rick Grimes.

At one point in the show, she develops a relationship with Dr. Denise Cloyd who is killed. Denise is the second of Tara's girlfriends to die a violent death in the show. There are three main characters on "The Walking Dead" who are gay but there is some criticism that the show could do better at developing their relationships.
8. Whiterose

Whiterose is a transgender woman and leader of the Chinese hacker group known as Dark Army. This is on the brilliant drama "Mr. Robot". Whiterose masquerades as the Chinese Minister of State Security, a male called Zhi Zhang. She is a character who is shrouded in mystery and intrigue, power and corruption.

She has an obsession with managing time and is carrying out a secret project to manipulate time. Whiterose is one of the first trans super-villains on TV and BD Wong has been nominated for his portrayal of the character.
9. Moira Strand

Answer: Samira Wiley

Moira Strand is a lesbian in the TV drama "The Handmaid's Tale." She is best friend to the main character of the show, June, who she had a close friendship with before the takeover by a hostile and authoritarian group who formed the country of Gilead.

In Gilead, Moira was to become a handmaid - a woman forced to become pregnant and bear children for couples who couldn't have children of their own. Moira escaped to Canada and through the show, we see flashbacks of her past relationships as she tries to navigate a difficult present time. Samira Wiley, who plays Moira brilliantly, was nominated for an Emmy for her performance and in 2014 was named "Out" magazine's Ingenue of the Year.
10. Jack McFarland

This is a well-known and well-loved character from the TV comedy series "Will and Grace." This show was nominated for nine and won seven Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) awards for outstanding comedy series. The show has been one of the most successful with main characters who are gay and centers around Will and Grace, who room together, and their friends Jack and Karen. Jack McFarland is a free-spirited and confident man who has many jobs and many relationships with men.

He is quite fickle and gets into all kinds of pranks with Karen, not taking life too seriously.

The show has been heralded for bringing gay characters to the forefront of TV shows and opening the doors for other shows to follow. Actor Sean Hayes, who was reluctant to discuss his sexual orientation for years for fears it would influence audience perception of his characters, married his partner of eight years, Scott Icenogle in 2014.
