Giles was in the first ever episode of "Buffy" and excluding seasons 6 and 7, he has been in nearly every episode since. He was the Librarian at Sunnydale High when Buffy started. At first, she didn't know who he was and wanted nothing more to do with slaying. When Willow went off with a vampire, she quickly changed her mind.

She was sent, by her Uncle Enyos, to make sure Angel never experienced true happiness- because he knew what the result would be. When Angel lost his soul, she tried to get it back. When she did translate the curse, she saved it to a disk. Angelus came into the school (the inscription on the front of the school meant "Enter all thee who seek knowledge") and killed her.

He then took her to Giles' house and left her there for him to find. Willow found the disk later and restored Angel's soul. Unfortunately, it was too late and Buffy had to kill him.

Buffy lost her powers on her 18th birthday in the episode "Helpless", as a test from the Watcher's Council. It gets out of hand and Giles refuses to go along with it, telling her the truth. However, when the vampire she must fight captures her mother, Buffy goes after him. And, with none of her powers, she fights him the best she can. Quentin Travers, the head of the Watcher's Council, tells Giles that she has gone to fight the vampire. Giles goes off to help her, even though he is warned not to. Buffy passed the test, but as Giles broke the rules he was fired. Travers described Giles' feelings toward Buffy as "a fathers love for a child".

This was at the end of the episode "Earshot". Buffy had just been cured of her ability to read minds, after being infected with this ability by a demon. Everyone kept thinking of the thing they least wanted Buffy to know, because they knew she could read their minds. Xander was thinking of sex, Wesley was thinking of Cordelia, and Joyce had been thinking of the incident in "Band Candy" when she had slept with Giles.

She kept making an excuse not to be alone with Buffy, but she still knew what she was thinking anyway. ("You had sex with Giles. On the hood of a police car. Twice.")

He was trying to find out what was happening but he couldn't read. All the characters experienced their worst nightmares in this episode. Buffy was killed by the Master and became a vampire, and Xander was attacked by the clown that was at his birthday party when he was a child.

He also walked into class and lost his clothes. Willow had to sing in a performance where she didn't know the words, and Cordelia had a bad hair day.

Wesley Wyndam-Pryce wasn't in "Buffy" for very long. After he was fired by the Watcher's Council, he moved to LA and joined Angel and Cordy in the crossover from "Buffy" to "Angel". Buffy hated Wesley and made it evident that she prefered Giles.

The Scoobies lost their memories because of one of Willow's spells that went wrong. He also thought that Spike (Randy) was his son. When he got his memory back he was kissing Anya. They started to frantically clean the Magic Box and ignore each other. This was also the episode in which Giles left Sunnydale and returned to England.

When the Watcher's Council visit Buffy with information about Glory, they put her through a series of tests. It's not long before she realised that they need her. She tells them that they will tell her what they know, re-hire Giles as her official Watcher, leave town and only make contact with her when they have more information.

He realised that Buffy is not ready to face the world by herself, as she relies on him too much. He decided to go back to England because of this.

This was in "The Prom" when Wesley had a huge crush on Cordelia. Wesley had been trying to convince himself that he shouldn't start a relationship with a student and Giles was sick of it.
