Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the 27th season of "Survivor", there was a twist: Ten previous players brought along a relative to compete as a couple. What was the next twist?

Answer: Each couple was split and each member sent to opposing teams

Ten returning players each bought a relative to the site in the Philippines. The tribes were split into Galang (Respect in Tagalog) and Tadhana (Destiny in Tagalog). All the previous players were assigned to Galang, whilst all their partners were assigned to Tadhana. The more experienced Galang tribe won the first four challenges.
2. Redemption Island returned after a three season layoff. Before the tribes had even left the marshaling post, another twist occurred: Each tribe had to vote off one member. However, the person voted out could be saved if their relative took their place. Which contestant swapped with their relative and was banished to Redemption Island?

Answer: Rupert swapped with his wife Laura B.

Laura B., Rupert's wife, was voted out by her tribe before the game had effectively begun. Rupert immediately swapped places with her. Candice was voted out of the previous players' team, but her husband did not swap with her. This caused two Galang players to go to Redemption Island.

They were joined by Marissa, Gervase's niece, at the end of the first episode. Rupert came last in the first duel and was the first person evicted from the game.
3. In the second episode, Rachel, Tyson's girlfriend was voted out. This was Vytas' suggestion. Why was Rachel voted out?

Answer: The tribe thought Tyson would swap places with her

Similar to Rupert swapping with his wife, Vytas thought that this might cause Tyson to swap places with Rachel. Rachel was blind-sided at Tribal Council. The ploy did not work, in fact it strengthened Tyson's resolve to stay until the very end, which he did.
Rachel subsequently came third in the next Redemption Island duel and was eliminated from the game. Tyson referred to this as "Rachel's sacrifice".
4. In Episode 3, one contestant suddenly quit, allegedly for the second time in a "Survivor" series. What was the name of this contestant?

Answer: Colton

Colton was not eliminated in his previous "Survivor" appearance in "Survivor, One World" (2012) but was medically evacuated with suspected appendicitis. In the current series, when his ploy of playing one contestant against the other in his own tribe did not work, he suddenly decided to quit. Jeff accused him of faking appendicitis in his first appearance and then blasted him for wanting to quit, "a second time". Colton subsequently departed without his tribe going to Tribal Council first.
5. Clues for the immunity idol were often burnt as the winners of the redemption duel, or the recipients they gave them to, burnt the clues to stop that player having a target on their back. However, Tyson found two immunity idols and played them to save himself on both occasions?

Answer: False

Tyson did indeed find two immunity idols, and subsequently played them but on neither occasion were they needed to save him. On the first occasion, in Episode 11, Tyson was unsure if he could trust Ciera, so he played his idol but no votes were cast against him. (Caleb was blind-sided 4-3 with Ciera receiving three votes). With the second idol, played in Episode 14, it seemed apparent that Hayden or Gervase was going to be voted out.

As Monica showed signs of breaking with her alliance, Tyson who had immunity gave the idol to Gervase.

However, Monica stuck with her alliance of Tyson and Gervase and the vote was Hayden three votes, Gervase two, making the idol play redundant. However, this was the last time the idol could be played.
6. In Episode 8, the tribes merged to form one tribe. Vytas won immunity, whilst the apparent leader, Aras arranged for the tribe to split the vote between Ciera and her mother Laura M, just in case there was a immunity idol in play. Who did get sent to Redemption Island?

Answer: Aras

Because of the merge, couples were reunited and immediately became targets for elimination. There were three "couples" remaining: Tina and Katie, Laura M. and Ciera, and Aras and Vytas. Aras, as apparent leader wanted to take out Laura M. as she was a strong player.

He wanted to split the vote so Ciera would leave if Laura M. had an immunity idol. However the merge caused shifting alliances and the five "individuals" formed an alliance. With Vytas having immunity, and with Laura M and Ciera's votes, the individuals' alliance blindsided Aras seven votes to Laura M. two votes, and Ciera two votes. (The other couple, Tina and Katie, were not made aware of the Aras blindside ploy).
7. Ciera made two bold moves on this series. The first was to vote out her own mother, Laura M. The second bold move was what?

Answer: She moved out of her alliance of four to side with Katie and Hayden

At tribal council, Ciera discovered she was ranked number four in an alliance of four (Tyson, Gervase, Monica and Ciera). Hayden convinced her to join him and Katie to form an alliance of three, arguing the new three could go all the way to the end. Ciera did indeed change her vote and this changed the voting as Hayden was meant to be eliminated 4-2. He was not.
8. Rocks are drawn to eliminate contestants when there is a voting tie twice in the same elimination. Rocks were drawn for only the second time in "Survivor" history (The first was in season 4). Who drew the white rock?

Answer: Katie

Because Ciera moved out of an alliance of four to join an apparent alliance of two, the vote in Episode 13 was Monica 3 Hayden 3. On the re-vote with Monica and Hayden not being able to vote, the vote was tied 2-2. Jeff instructed the tribe unless they could unanimously decide to vote Monica or Hayden, they would have to draw rocks. No-one changed their position.

This made Monica and Hayden safe, as was Gervase who had immunity. The other three drew rocks; Ciera and Tyson were safe as they drew black rocks, Katie was unlucky as she drew the white rock and was sent to Redemption Island.
9. Down to the final six: Monica, Gervase and Tyson had an alliance. Monica was seen to be the weak link, despite winning three individual immunities She was seen by Hayden, Ciera and Tina as the weak link in the alliance and was "wooed" by each of them to break her alliance. Did she ever break her alliance with Gervase and Tyson?

Answer: No

Monica, Gervase and Tyson had an alliance which Monica never broke. In the final episodes, Monica made it clear, this was her game to win and for once she was not in the shadow of her more-famous husband, Brad Culpepper (Sixth person eliminated day 10) an ex-NFL player. Monica made it clear to players outside her alliance that she would listen to their plans, and in the last immunity challenge, she blocked Gervase from overtaking her, both indicating she was playing her own game but paradoxically, she remained true to her alliance.

After been blind-sided by Colton, early, in "Survivor One World" (2012), she was the runner up in this series. She received Vytas' vote in the Jury Vote, which indicated she outwitted, outplayed and outlasted everybody in one player's eyes.
10. Tyson won the jury vote 7-1-0 (Monica received one vote, Gervase none), and hence the title of Sole Survivor. In his speech before the jury voted, Tyson stated his game was all about strategy and not about malice. However one jury member disagreed. Who?

Answer: Katie

This was Tyson's third attempt to win after, the 18th Season "Survivor, Tocantins" (2009) and the 20th Series, "Survivor: Heroes vs Villains (2010). Tyson deserved to win as he won the last two individual immunities plus he found both of the immunity idols.

When he made his speech before the jury his comments about a game plan of all strategy and no malice, was dissected by Katie. She, in her address to the final three, stated that when she drew the white rock, Tyson got up as if to hug Katie but instead pointed to the Jury and said that her seat was over there. Tyson admitted this claim was true and apologised to Katie for his actions. Katie actually voted for Tyson as her pick for sole survivor.
