Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which main character typically wore a blue shirt and rode a buckskin horse?

Answer: Trampas

Doug McClure had blue eyes, which the blue shirt complemented. He was a very good rider and looked at ease in the saddle on Buck.
2. In the episode "With Help from Ulysses," who or what was Ulysses?

Answer: a shaggy dog

At the urgent request of a sick old prospector, Trampas took Ulysses with him to help locate the man's niece. Trampas thought the name Ulysses was a strange name for a dog, so he called him Fred. The dog wasn't much help in finding the niece, but he was adorable, and his interaction with Trampas provided a few laughs. He was a well-trained canine actor.

The deaf ranch hand appeared in the episode "Jacob Was a Plain Man" from season five. Aldo Ray played the part, and he was a solidly built man.

I made up the other two choices.
3. Which ranch owner carried a white-handled six-gun with the letter "S" on it?

Answer: Judge Garth

The "S" was for Shiloh, and the ranch hands had given it to him. It served as a key element in the episode that detailed Trampas's back story in "Ride a Dark Trail."
4. Before David Hartman became a cast regular in season seven, he guest starred in the season six episode "Masquerade." Who was he pretending to be, with help from the citizens of Medicine Bow?

Answer: the town sheriff

He posed as the town sheriff to impress his visiting father who was a retired lawman. He really worked at the bank but not as its president.
5. Which future star of "Alias Smith and Jones" made guest appearances in two episodes?

Answer: Pete Duel

Duel appeared in "The Good-Hearted Badman" in season six and "The Price of Love" in season seven. Although he was an outlaw in the first episode, Elizabeth Grainger was able to see the good in him. In the second episode, his character was a troubled young man who was possessively protective of Clay Grainger.
6. Which main character wore what appeared to be a rust-colored corduroy shirt and rode an Appaloosa horse?

Answer: The Virginian

Sometimes the color of the shirt appeared to be orange, and sometimes it looked to be a burgundy hue. He wore a black leather vest over it. He called the horse Joe or Joe D.
7. In "Beloved Outlaw" from season five, Elizabeth Grainger tamed a wild white stallion, intending to ride him in the Founders Day race, but who actually represented Shiloh and won the race?

Answer: Trampas

Although Elizabeth's beloved Aladdin had beaten Trampas's horse Buck in a practice run, the white stallion suffered an injury to his leg and was unable to participate in the real race. Trampas won riding Buck, and he gave the trophy to Elizabeth. Aladdin recovered from his injury, but at the end of the show, Elizabeth turned him loose to return to the wild.
8. Season seven's first episode, "The Saddle Warmer," introduced David Hartman to the series. He signed on at Shiloh to fill in for Trampas who was sidelined with a broken leg. How did Trampas break his leg?

Answer: He slipped and fell down wet stairs.

After David had accidentally thrown a bucket of water on Trampas, who was on his way to a date, Trampas chased David up the recently mopped stairs at the saloon. He slipped and fell, breaking his leg. David felt bad for causing the accident and talked The Virginian into letting him do Trampas's work while he recuperated.
9. By what nickname did John Grainger call Elizabeth?

Answer: Libby

It was his term of endearment. The Virginian, Trampas, and Stacey all called her Liz.
10. The Irish Rovers made several appearances in season seven. What was their occupation in "Crime Wave at Buffalo Springs"?

Answer: bartenders and bouncers in a saloon

They were briefly arrested for their part in a "fake" bank hold-up. They had their musical instruments with them in jail and entertained Trampas who was in the cell next to them by singing "The Black Velvet Band." They also performed at the wedding at the end of the show. This comedy episode is my all-time favorite.
