Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the start of Leg 3, teams flew to what Alberta city?

Answer: Edmonton

At the start of Leg 3, teams were told to fly to Edmonton, Alberta, but to do that they needed to descend from the Pit Stop atop Mount McKenzie in Revelstoke, British Columbia, drive themselves to Kelowna Airport, and sign up for one of two flights across the provincial border. Two teams were on the first flight and six were on the second, departing two and a half hours later than the first flight.

Interestingly, teams were also told of a new race mechanic called the Double One-Way which would appear for the first time in this leg. Upon landing in Edmonton, teams needed to head to the Southgate Mall to visit the high-tech retailer The Source to get their next clue and a step counter watch that could give them a prize if they took the least amount of steps in the leg.
2. In Alberta in Leg 3, teams completing the 'Celebrate' Detour task were required to bake a cake.

Answer: False

After stopping at The Source, teams were given a clue sending them to the High Level Bridge Streetcar. There, they could find their next clue and the Blind Double One-Way onboard. Of course, this also meant opening up their Detour clue, and this allowed them a choice between 'Celebrate' and 'Elevate'.

In 'Celebrate', teams had to go to the Royal Alberta Museum where they needed to perform with the Kokopelli Youth Choir, learning a South African medley (lyrics and dance moves) to join them in dance.

In 'Elevate', teams instead needed to head to the 100th Street Funicular to complete two nearly-identical puzzles of the Edmonton skyline, transferring pieces one at a time during their trips on the funicular to the top and bottom to get each done and receive their next clue. Dave and Irina, Aarthy and Thinesh, Anthony and James, Lauren and Joanne, and Sarah and Sam all completed 'Elevate'. Trish and Amy, Gilles and Sean, and Meaghan and Marie completed 'Celebrate'.
3. How many teams utilized the Blind Double One-Way in Leg 3 (in Alberta)?

Answer: Two

So with the Detour in mind, teams had the opportunity to use the Blind Double One-Way. A One-Way is a race mechanic that allows a team to force another team racing behind them to complete a specified side of the Detour with no opportunity to switch. In other words, if that team is known to not possess a certain skill, a team could force them to complete a relevant task to trip them up.

In this leg of the race, teams faced a Double One-Way, indicating that two teams could fall victim, and it was Blind, indicating that the people using the mechanic could remain anonymous while using it. Lauren and Joanne used the One-Way on Trish and Amy while Sarah and Sam used it on Gilles and Sean. Both sent the teams to 'Celebrate'.
4. Teams completing the Road Block in Alberta in Leg 3 needed to engage with an art form originating in which nation?

Answer: Japan

After the Detour, teams proceeded to Old Strathcona Antique Mall and were asked to search for Jon inside to find their next clue. Little did they know, Jon was actually just in bobblehead form. When this was done, teams received a clue sending them to their Road Block at the Ozawa Pavilion of the Kurimoto Japanese Garden in Spruce Grove, Alberta.

There, teams had to choose one one person who was 'feeling icky', and for the task, they had to master the delicate art of Japanese flower arrangement known as Ikebana. Watching a silent arrangement, they had to mimic the process exactly. Irina, Thinesh, Anthony, Sarah, Lauren, Amy, Meghan, and Gilles completed this task.
5. Which team was eliminated from the race at the end of Leg 3 in Alberta?

Answer: Gilles and Sean

At the end of Leg 3, teams had to search the grounds of the University of Alberta's Botanic Gardens for the Aga Khan Garden where they would find Jon waiting at the next Pit Stop. Dave and Irina, who nabbed a seat on the early flight, stayed ahead throughout the leg to win their second of the race.

This time, the couple won themselves a trip for two to Casablanca, Morocco. Ultimately, the team that won the $5,000 gift card prize for The Source was Lauren and Joanne. In the end, Gilles and Sean were the last to arrive at the Pit Stop, having been foiled by the Blind Double One-Way.

They were eliminated from the race.
6. In the fourth leg of the race, teams flew to which city in the northern territories of Canada?

Answer: Yellowknife

Teams left the Aga Khan Garden in Spruce Grove, Alberta early in the morning with a clue in hand telling them to head to the airport to fly to Yellowknife, the capital of the Northwest Territories. Upon arriving at the airport, teams had their first opportunity to book their own flights, having had them chartered for them in previous legs. Upon arriving at their destination more than fourteen hundred kilometers away, they had to make their way to the Somba K'e Civic Plaza where they could search for the United in Celebration Sculpture in weather below -20 degrees celsius.
7. Teams visiting the Canadian north in Leg 4 had to do which of the following for an active Route Info task?

Answer: Go ice fishing

At Somba K'e, teams received a clue leading them onwards to Rotary Park. There, teams had to pick up the keys to a snowmobile and use their new vehicles to cross the thick ice of Great Slave Lake to find a fishing village on the other side. There, they found hand-held augers and traditional fishing equipment and, using both, they needed to drill through three feet of ice to properly place a Dene fishing line.

When this task was complete, teams could start their Road Block.
8. During Leg 4's first Road Block, team members had to examine diamonds, looking for several with which symbol engraved on them?

Answer: Maple leaf

For the first Road Block in Yellowknife, teams needed to choose one person to head into the Northwest Territories' Diamond Center. Once there, team members would be presented with seven diamonds and they would have to use a jeweller's loop to identify which six were identified with a Canadian symbol-- a maple leaf.

Then, using a ForeverMark viewer, they had to locate and note the identification number for each stone and place them in order from heaviest to lightest. Sam, Marie, James, Trish, Thinesh, Dave, and Lauren worked on this task though Anthony and James used their Express Pass to avoid leaving too far behind the penultimate team.
9. Leg 4 contained more than one Road Block.

Answer: True

Completing the first Road Block of the leg, teams headed to Great Slave Lake to find their next clue box waiting out on the ice. This one contained the second Road Block of the leg, which meant that the team member completing it needed to be the one who did not complete the diamond task.

As such, Irina, Sarah, Aarthy, Joanne, Meaghan, Amy, and Anthony were required to do the task. For this one, the participating member had to dive under the ice. Donning a wetsuit, they had to dive into the waters under three feet of ice and swim to an opening nearby to claim the next clue. Irina elected not to complete the task, using an Express Pass to bypass it instead.
10. Which team was last to arrive at the Pit Stop in Leg 4, finding themselves spared by a non-elimination?

Answer: Trish and Amy

After the second Road Block, teams raced to the Air Tindi Float Base where, before checking into the Pit Stop, they needed to identify the locations of ten rescue sites using latitude and longitude on four different maps. When they had all ten correctly marked, they could hop into a skiplane and fly to the First Nations community of Dettah to check in with Jon at the next Pit Stop. Though Dave and Irina arrived first, they took a two hour penalty for not completing the map task, allowing Aarthy and Thinesh to show in actual first place and snag a trip for two to Dublin, Ireland. Ultimately, Trish and Amy fell behind due to cab troubles but they were spared by the race's first non-elimination Pit Stop.
