Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Blackadder: The Cavalier Years", what did Baldrick suggest be placed on King Charles I's head to avoid decapitation?

Answer: Pumpkin

Although Sir Edmund Blackadder pointed out that Baldrick's cunning plan wasn't "1% convincing", he eventually was forced to go through with it when he, as the executioner, had no other cunning plan immediately available.
2. The Earl of Essex was famously generous to his executioner, having a ballad written to commemorate this. Where does Blackadder, as the King's executioner, say it is still sung?

Answer: Chepstow Arms

The Earl of Essex's ballad indicates that he had a thousand sovereigns (hey nonny no), and that he distributed them to the man with the axe (oh).
3. According to Sir Edmund Blackadder, where is King Charles I spending the winter hiding?

Answer: A blackcurrant bush

Blackadder assures Baldrick that the King is perfectly safe, and as likely to be caught by Roundheads as a fox being pursued by a pack of one-legged hunting tortoises. Sir Edmund may or may not be lying.
4. After Baldrick announces his particularly cunning plan to help save the King, Sir Edmund likens his servant's brain to "the four-headed, man-eating haddock fish beast of..." where?

Answer: Aberdeen

Baldrick's brain is like the four-headed man-eating haddock fish beast of Aberdeen because it doesn't exist.
5. When meeting Oliver Cromwell, King Charles is most interested in what a Lord Protector does. How does Cromwell answer his question on this?

Answer: "He spells your doom"

Cromwell tells the King that he has "come far", from "country squire to Lord Protector of England". In reality, Cromwell was not appointed Lord Protector until 1653, four years after the King's execution.
6. In "Blackadder's Christmas Carol", Ebeneezer Blackadder runs a moustache shop, but where is it located?

Answer: Dumpling Lane

Although Blackadder's moustache shop appears successful, his total profit for the year up to Christmas is seventeen pounds and a penny. His generosity then leads to him giving away the seventeen pounds, leaving him, not with Baldrick's estimate of thirty-eight pounds, eight shillings and fourpence, but in fact with a penny. Which he also gives away.
7. From whose garden emporium does Ebeneezer procure his "special Christmas twig"?

Answer: Mr Thicktwistle

Showing his disappointment, Baldrick remarks that the Christmas twig is "a bit of a tiddler", to which Ebeneezer responds that "it's not what you've got, it's where you stick it".
8. In playing charades with his servant Edmund Blackadder, the Prince Regent points out that he knows the Bible has a fatted calf, but isn't aware of the two what?

Answer: Silly bulls

Once Blackadder has corrected the Prince, pointing out that they aren't "silly bulls" but "syllables", the Prince decides he no longer wants to play charades as the whole game is getting a bit "sylla".
9. In the far future, Queen Asphyxia and her triple husbandoid welcome Admiral Blackadder back from war. But, why has he failed to vanquish the Nibblepibblies?

Answer: They don't exist

Upon hearing of the exploits of the Grand Admiral of the Dark Segment (and Lord of the High Slung Bottoms of Zob), the Queen is most pleased, exclaiming that he has pleasantly wibbled her frussetpouch.
10. Having heard of Ebeneezer's generosity, Queen Victoria decides to reward him with a thousand pounds and what else?

Answer: The title "Baron Blackadder"

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert arrive at Ebeneezer's shop on Christmas morning to reward him for his generosity. Unfortunately, this is after he has seen the error of his ways and realised that bad guys have all the fun, and, having properly insulted them, he sends them packing. Before he realises who they actually are.
11. In "Blackadder: Back and Forth", why is Baldrick in charge of the cooking at Lord Blackadder's New Year's Eve party?

Answer: The regular cook has been invited to an orgy at Delia Smith's house

When summoned to the dining room during dinner, Baldrick appears wearing an apron displaying the design of a French maid's outfit, complete with protruding bust. It is subsequently revealed that this is ALL he's wearing.
12. Although Baldrick builds the time machine, whose original design does he use?

Answer: Leonardo da Vinci

Upon discovering that the time machine actually works, Lord Blackadder proclaims that Baldrick is "the greatest genius who has ever lived". However, when it becomes apparent that they can't return to their own time as Baldrick has neglected to write the numbers on the spinners, it becomes "a spectacular return to form after the genius moment".
13. Blackadder and Baldrick visit the court of Elizabeth I, and while there Blackadder runs into William Shakespeare. Will is carrying the manuscript of which play?

Answer: Macbeth

Blackadder gets Will Shakespeare to autograph the title page of "Macbeth" for him, before punching him to the ground and berating him for the suffering of schoolchildren for the next 400 years. He also gives him a kicking for "Ken Branagh's endless uncut four-hour version of 'Hamlet'".
14. When Blackadder returns to the present, what does he discover has happened to England in its history that was not the case when he set off?

Answer: England was conquered by Napoleon after he won the Battle of Waterloo

Baldrick brings about the French victory at the Battle of Waterloo by landing the time machine on the Duke of Wellington. The advantage for Blackadder in this is that he is able to steal the Iron Duke's wellington boots, one of the items requested as proof of his journey through time.
15. After putting history right, Blackadder is reminded of the havoc an unscrupulous person could wreak with a time machine. What does he subsequently do to improve his own position?

Answer: He alters history to become King Edmund III

While Baldrick becomes a five-term Prime Minister, Blackadder assumes authority as King Edmund III, universally loved and with a 98% approval rating. He is also married to the nation's most famous beauty, Queen Marian of Sherwood.
