Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which actor played the first Doctor?

Answer: William Hartnell

William Hartnell (1908-1975) was the first Doctor, but he was not actually the first choice of the creators of the series. Producer Rex Tucker originally offered the role to his friend Hugh David. David turned it down because he had already been in a starring role in another series, and had not liked the high publicity that came with it. Geoffrey Bayldon also turned down the role (as he did again when offered the job as the second Doctor after Hartnell's run).

Despite beginning his acting career in 1925, his role as the first Doctor in "Doctor Who" is likely what he is best remembered for. Afterwards, Hartnell revealed in an interview that he took the role to try to counter the typecast 'tough guy' roles he had become known for.

Question by reedy
2. The first Doctor's first companion was actually his granddaughter.

Answer: True

Actress Carol Ann Ford played the part of the Doctor's granddaughter, carrying the name of Susan Foreman. It was not the original intent for the two to be related, but writer Anthony Coburn was not comfortable with the possible connotations of such a relationship were they *not* related.

Question by reedy
3. Which episode featuring the first Doctor was the first to be broadcast in color?

Answer: None of them were broadcast in color

The first episode of "Doctor Who" to be broadcast in color did not come until the arrival of the third Doctor (Jon Pertwee) in the first of the four-episode serial "Spearhead from Space" (aired January 3, 1970).

Question by Aragom
4. The first Doctor had a second actor during the course of the show's run. Who was the second actor to play the first Doctor and for which episode?

Answer: Richard Hurndall/"The Five Doctors"

In 1983, the 20th anniversary episode titled "The Five Doctors" told a story where Gallifrey itself was in peril, and needed all five (at that time) Doctors to be pulled out of their time streams for the rescue. Richard Hurndall played the first Doctor, as the original actor had died in 1975.

Question by Chrysalde
5. The first Doctor's first two human companions taught at the school where Susan went.

Answer: True

Ian Chesterton (William Russell) and Barbara Wright (Jacqueline Hill) first met The Doctor when they were extremely curious about Susan, The Doctor's granddaughter, for she had an incredible knowledge about science and history.
The pair of them decided to investigate and they followed the young girl until they came across a junk yard, where they found the mysterious blue box and thus, meeting The Doctor.

Question by doubleox515
6. The Daleks were never mentioned or seen throughout the first Doctor's tenure.

Answer: False

The Daleks were first introduced in the first series second serial. It was a seven-part serial where the Daleks were shown as they were shown in the revived series.
Terry Nation was the creator of these iconic "Doctor Who" enemies and they were seen as harmless... until we saw what they were really up to.

Question by doubleox515
7. When the Doctor traveled to China, he (and his companions) met Marco Polo.

Answer: True

The storyline of "Marco Polo" ran over seven episodes from February to April, 1964. The Doctor and his companions land in the Cathay region in the year 1289, with a badly damaged TARDIS. While there, they meet Marco Polo, as well as Kublai Khan. Unfortunately, none of the episodes from this serial still exist intact. Only still photos or fragments still exist.

Question by Aragom
8. The last appearance of the first Doctor was in the serial "The Tenth Planet". Who were the villains that he faced, originating from the planet Mondas?

Answer: Cybermen

The Cybermen originated on Mondas, which was Earth's twin planet in our solar system (the 10th planet). With the help of his companions, the Doctor defeated the plan of the Cybermen to steal Earth's energy, and the Cybermen planet ended up being destroyed itself. Unfortunately, the Doctor weakened and 'died' as well. Of course, this was the first instance of the Doctor regenerating (although they did not name it as such right away).

Question by reedy
9. In his televised travels, the first Doctor met another member of his race for the very first time at the end of the second season in the serial "The Time Meddler". Who was it?

Answer: The Meddling Monk

The Meddling Monk was played by actor Peter Butterworth. In addition to the serial "The Time Meddler", the Meddling Monk also appeared in the third season serial "The Daleks' Master Plan". The Meddling Monk was so named for his tendency to alter history for his own amusement, or to a version that he thought was better (for whatever reason).

The actual name of the Doctor's race (Time Lords) was not actually mentioned until The last serial of the second Doctor's run.

Question by Aragom
10. The name of the Doctor's home planet, Gallifrey, was never mentioned during the first Doctor's four season run.

Answer: True

Gallifrey was not actually named until the 11th season (1973) during the serial "The Time Warrior", although it was seen onscreen in 1969's serial "The War Games". Gallifrey was part of a binary star system, located in the Kaster borous constellation.
