Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which state was the Hilltop located?

Answer: Virginia

"The Walking Dead" opens in Georgia, but it is only after traveling to the D.C.-metro area that the group happens upon The Hilltop Colony, which is located in Virginia. The group gets its first look at the Hilltop in season 6, episode 11, "Knots Untie." Though located in Virginia for the purposes of the story, the Hilltop set was filmed in Senoia, Georgia.
2. What was at the center of the Hilltop Colony?

Answer: A historic mansion

The Hilltop Colony was built around a historic mansion called the Barrington House. The historic property consisted of a mansion, a barn, and a blacksmith shop and was visited by children on school field trips. FEMA brought in trailers in the early days after the Outbreak so it could serve as a refugee camp. Fences eventually went up around the property, which also came to encompass fields for crops.
3. Who was the original leader of the Hilltop Colony?

Answer: Gregory

Despite never killing a single walker, Gregory managed to assume leadership of The Hilltop Colony after FEMA abandoned the safe-zone. He was often seen drinking whisky at his desk in his study in the historic mansion. A weak and self-centered man, he made deals with the Saviors and allowed others to protect him.
4. The Saviors demanded half of the Hilltop's resources. What did they do to make their demand clear?

Answer: Killed a teenage boy who resided at the Hilltop

The Saviors typically established dominance over communities by killing one of their members, in this case a teenage boy named Rory. Gregory agreed to their demands and entered into an agreement to supply half the Hilltop's goods to the Sanctuary, which left the Hilltop near starvation.

The Hilltop then turned to Rick's group to dispense with the Saviors, only to find the group was larger than they imagined.
5. Rick introduced the Hilltop to the Kingdom.

Answer: false

Rather, a member of the Hilltop, Jesus, introduced Rick's people to the Kingdom. Jesus was aware of the Kingdom's existence and that it was also being extorted by the Saviors. He told Rick, "Your world is about to get a whole lot bigger."
6. Which of these children was born at the Hilltop?

Answer: Hershel (Maggie's son)

Hershel is the son of Maggie Greene and Glenn Rhee, named after Maggie's father. He was born at the Hilltop after the war with the Saviors. Sophia was born years before the apocalypse and died during it. Judith was born in the prison camp. Gracie was the daughter of a Savior who was killed by Rick, after which Aaron adopted her.

She was likely born at the Savior outpost or in the Sanctuary.
7. When the Saviors first established dominance over the Hilltop, whom did they take to work for them at the Sanctuary?

Answer: Dr. Carson

The Saviors took Dr. Emmett Carson to serve as their doctor in the Sanctuary. They left behind Emmett's brother Harlan, who remained the Hilltop's doctor and eventually became Maggie's OBGYN. However, after Negan killed Emmett, the Saviors returned to the Hilltop to seize Harlan to replace him.
8. What martial arts expert was the Hilltop's primary recruiter and supply runner?

Answer: Jesus

Jesus first encountered Rick and Daryl when trying to steal a supply truck from them. He later brought them to the Hilltop. He served as a supply runner, recruiter, martial arts instructor, and eventually a leader of the community.
9. Before Rick encountered the colony, how was the Hilltop disposing of its dead?

Answer: Cremation

When Maggie asked Jesus why the Hilltop community cremated instead of burying their dead, he replied, "The idea was, just to keep going." When Maggie asked, "What do you have to remember them by?" Jesus replied, "Us." Maggie wanted her husband Glenn buried, however, so he was buried at the Hilltop with a cross to mark his grave.
10. Who was elected leader of the Hilltop Colony after victory over the Saviors?

Answer: Maggie

Maggie was elected to replace Gregory after the War with the Saviors. Gregory even called for the elections himself, apparently believing he would win. His defeat left him feeling bitter, however, and he engaged in a plot to kill Maggie, after which she had him hanged.
11. Who served as the Hilltop's doctor after the war against the Saviors?

Answer: Enid

Enid, who once lived in Alexandria and was Carl Grimes's girlfriend, studied under Siddiq and became the Hilltop's doctor. One of her earliest jobs was to amputate Aaron's arm. The Hilltop's former doctor, Dr. Harlan Carson, was abducted by the Saviors and then died while attempting to escape.
12. Which of the following was NEVER a blacksmith or blacksmith apprentice at the Hilltop?

Answer: Daryl

Earl Sutton was the colony's primary blacksmith. Henry came to study under him because he wanted to learn to repair the pipes in the Kingdom. Alden, a former Savior, later became Earl's apprentice as well. Earl eventually died because he was bit while helping children escape from the Hilltop after it was attacked.
13. Who became the leader of the Hilltop after Jesus died?

Answer: Tara

After Maggie left with her son to join Georgie's work building up communities, the reins of leadership fell on a reluctant Jesus. Tara, his right-hand-woman, had to urge him to do his job. After Jesus was killed, Tara became the de-facto leader of the Hilltop until her own death, at which point leadership of the Hilltop fell to a council. Yukimo and Jerry both appear to have been members of that council.
14. Which of the following people NEVER lived at the Hilltop?

Answer: Abraham, Glenn, and Noah

Jesus and Gregory were among the original inhabitants of the Hilltop. Tara, Maggie, and Enid settled there after the war with the Saviors. Alden was a Savior taken prisoner at the Hilltop who later became a member of the community. Magna's group, which included Yukimo, Connie, Kelly, and Luke, settled there after Judith found them and Michonne didn't want them in Alexandria.

Although Abraham and Glenn were both buried at the Hilltop, they never lived there. They were killed while still living at Alexandria. Noah's last residence, prior to his death, was also Alexandria.
15. What community sought refuge at the Hilltop after it collapsed?

Answer: The Kingdom

The refugees of the Kingdom made their long trek during a cold, snowy winter. Led by King Ezekiel, Daryl, and Carol, they eventually arrived in safety and became members of the Hilltop, except for Queen Carol, who divorced her husband King Ezekiel and followed Daryl and Lydia to Alexandria. Members of the Kingdom who became important figures at the Hilltop include Jerry, Nabila, and Dianne.
16. What woman, the wife of Earl Sutton, was at one time the head gardener of the Hilltop, before she ended up with her head on a pike?

Answer: Tammy Rose

Nabila, a member of the Kingdom, migrated to the Hilltop when it collapsed, and she did eventually become a gardener there. But Tammy Rose Sutton was Earl's wife. Together, they had a son who was killed while attempting to save a horse, and later they adopted an abandoned Whisperer child. Tammy was eventually decapitated by Alpha, and her head was placed on a pike to mark the Whisperer's borders.
17. Which of the following people NEVER spent time in a Hilltop jail cell?

Answer: Negan

Earl Sutton, the blacksmith, built the cell. He ended up staying in it himself after he attacked Maggie, though he was forgiven and let out because, when he committed the act, he was drunk and bitter over the loss of his son. Carol's son Henry, who came to study at the Hilltop to be a blacksmith, also ended up spending some time in a cell for sneaking out and getting drunk. Lydia (Alpha's daughter) was put in a cell next to his after she was captured. Negan was imprisoned in Alexandria, not the Hilltop.
18. Alpha decapitated nine people and put their heads on pikes to mark her borders. The majority of those heads belonged to residents of the Hilltop.

Answer: true

The Hilltop had the most victims on Alpha's pikes. Rodney and Adeline (Addy) were briefly introduced as teenage members of the Hilltop in earlier episodes before ending up with their heads on pikes in "The Calm Before." Earl's wife Tammy was decapitated, as was the Hilltop doctor Enid and its leader Tara. So too was the Hilltop's temporary blacksmith apprentice Henry. Even if you don't count Henry among the Hilltop's ranks, the Hilltop still accounts for at least five of the nine heads on Alpha's pikes.

The other four were Highwaymen Ozzie and Alek (who lived in their own community) and former Saviors DJ and Frankie (who lived in Alexandria).
19. How was the Hilltop eventually destroyed in season 10?

Answer: By fire and walkers

The Whisperers attacked the Hilltop by shooting flaming arrows at its barns and fences and setting it on fire. Alpha also unleashed her horde in the direction of the Hilltop, and the walkers trampled through the crumbling defenses. The populace was forced to abandon the colony and flee to safer ground, though they put up a fight before evacuating.
20. Approximately how long did the Hilltop Colony exist before it was destroyed in season 10?

Answer: 10 years

As of Season 10, the Hilltop was the second longest lasting community on "The Walking Dead," having been established during the Outbreak as a Safe-Zone and lasting until its collapse at the hands of the Whisperers. Alexandria was established as a Safe-Zone as well but outlasted the Hilltop.

Although the timeline of "The Walking Dead" is somewhat vague, Judith, who was born in the first year after the Outbreak, was about nine years old when the Hilltop collapsed.
