Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these companies is behind the "Dead or Alive" series?

Answer: Tecmo

Developed by Team Ninja and published by Tecmo, "Dead or Alive" was first released in 1998. It was most notably famous for the arena-style gameplay, whereas when a character would be knocked out of the arena, they would be launched in the air by an explosion from the floors surrounding the arena, usually resulting in matches ending pretty quickly.
2. In which series of games can the character Millia Rage be found?

Answer: Guilty Gear

Millia Rage is first seen in the original 1998 "Guilty Gear" game for the Playstation. One of the few female characters, she would utilize energy blasts and even her own hair during combat! "Guilty Gear" was developed by Arc System Works.
3. What was the title of a rare 1998 fighting game in which the characters would battle each other using their magical Strega powers?

Answer: Destrega

"Destrega", a game by Koei, would pit the characters against each other in a fully 3D environment. From a distance, the fighters (most of them magical people called the Strega) could launch projectile attacks using their Strega powers, and if they were close to each other they could engage in hand-to-hand combat.
4. Who is the main character of the "Art of Fighting" games?

Answer: Ryo Sakazaki

Released in 1992, "Art of fighting" was the work of SNK which was, at the time, the dominant company on the scene of fighting games, along side Capcom. The series, however, was not as well received as Capcom's "Street Fighter" or Midway's "Mortal Kombat".
5. How many playable characters were in the original "Killer Instinct"?

Answer: 10

The characters are (in no particular order): Jago, Cinder, Fulgore, Spinal, Chief Thunder, Glacius, T.J. Combo, B. Orchid, Riptor, Sabrewulf. The boss character, Eyedol, is unplayable. The original "Killer Instinct" was developed by "Rare" and published by "Midway" in 1994 for the arcades and later ported by Nintendo for their SNES and Game Boy consoles.
6. What was the first "Mortal Kombat" game to feature the character Noob Saibot?

Answer: Mortal Kombat 2

Noob Saibot was originally Sub Zero in the first "Mortal Kombat" game. In the sequel, the role of Sub Zero is assumed by his younger brother. In the arcade version of "Mortal Kombat 2", one could fight Noob Saibot after winning 50 (fifty) matches in a row in versus mode. The match would take place in the stage "Goro's Lair".
7. What was the first 3D fighting game?

Answer: Virtua Fighter

"Sega began to attract attention with the 1993 release of Virtua Fighter in arcades. It was the first fighting game with 3D polygon graphics and a viewpoint that zoomed and rotated with the action. Despite the graphics, players were confined to back and forth motion as seen in other fighting games."

8. What was the first game in the "Soul" fighting game series?

Answer: Soul Edge

"Soul Edge", or "Soul Blade" as it is known in the EU and US, was first released in Japan in 1996. It was a very popular fighting game created by the former Namco (now Namco Bandai). It featured weapon fighting in medieval-like settings, with the title blade, "Soul Edge", being the most powerful weapon.

The sequel to Soul Edge was "Soul Calibur". The "Tekken" series, also made by the former Namco, has several interlinks with the series, such as the character Yoshimitsu (and for the PS2 only version of "Soul Calibur 2", Heihachi Mishima).
9. Who are the parents of Jin Kazama in the "Tekken" game series?

Answer: Jun Kazama and Kazuya Mishima

Jin Kazama is the son to Kazuya Mishima, and is therefore an inheritor of the Mishima "Devil Gene". Jin was first featured in "Tekken 3", released in 1998 by Namco. His moves were mostly those of Kazuya, however he also had some moves of his mother, Jun Kazama, as well as some original ones. Due to storyline and gameplay reasons, however, his moveset was almost entirely changed in "Tekken 4".
10. What is the first ever game to include actual fist fighting?

Answer: Heavyweight Champ

"The first game to feature fist fighting was Heavyweight Champ in 1976." This game was developed and published by Sega.
