Answer: "Virtua Fighter"

The blocky appearance only really refers to the original "Virtua Fighter" game in 1993, as sequels had obvious graphical improvements. Nevertheless, the movement of the fighters was relatively fluid (apart from the jumps, which seemed to last an eternity!). "Virtua Fighter" had many sequels and although starting out on SEGA consoles, the fourth installment was released on Playstation.

Answer: "Marvel Super Heroes"

This game allows you to play as villains such as Magneto and Juggernaut, as well as "goodies".

It is noted as being fairly easy to play. This means that you are able to pull of "big moves" from the start, without having to fist master the controls.

Also unique to this versus fighting game is the use of substances called "Infinity Gems" which give the super heroes *extra* superpowers, such as replenishing life. These gems come from the evil villain, Thanos who stole them in order to become master of the universe. The story goes that the Marvel super heroes, as Earth's best fighters, are the only ones who can stop this mad character.

Answer: "Soul Edge"

"Soul Edge"? I always called it "Soul Blade", but whatever :D.

The game is centered around a pair of swords, together known as Soul Edge (although they have been known by several different names). Each of the fighters in the game is seeking to attain the swords, either to destroy them, knowing that they are evil, or to use them for power.

Through the game you face several other fighters before reaching Cervantes - the man who stole Soul Edge in the beginning. The graphics and gameplay of "Soul Edge" are generally good, with a few questionable backgrounds (maybe they ran out of ideas). The main strength of this game is the storyline - each character having their own individual outcome should you complete the game using them. The music is also excellent and goes well with each nail-biting round!

Answer: "Power Instinct"

This game was released in 1993 and appears to almost poke fun at some of the more serious fighting games.

Whilst maintaining the typical high-stakes fighting tournament, the characters are somewhat less serious. Other characters include a self-proclaimed ladies man, a rather strange recluse who claims she can turn a man to stone by staring into his eyes, and a righteous Native American called White Buffalo.

The story behind the tournament is that the one who can conquer all opposition will have a chance to fight the leader of the Goketsuji clan, an elderly lady called Oume. A victory over Oume will mean gaining control of the clan.

Answer: "Mortal Kombat"

This game was revolutionary and a huge success in the world of gaming. It was marketed with the slogan, "So Real It Hurts" and this is just about true! The game spawned several sequels and with it brought several new characters, all unique in their fighting styles and some with superhuman abilities.

The success of this game is seen in the unique distinction of being followed up by a film. Something which set "Mortal Kombat" apart from similar fighting games was that a beaten opponent wasn't just beaten, but they had to face the Fatality. This was a move performed after the match where the winning character would use a unique move to kill the loser. This often included the loss of one's head, limbs, or just causing them to explode!

Answer: "Dead or Alive"

Although often seen as being in the shadow of other fighting games of the time such as "Tekken" and "Street Fighter", "Dead or Alive" is still held as one of the all time greats of this genre and this is reflected in its many sequels.

The game is set apart by the speedy fighting styles of most of its characters as well as the focus on volley-hitting. Because of this, rounds are often very quickly decided. Speeding up the rounds further is a unique format where, instead of having the typical "time out" when outside of the allocated fighting square, "Dead or Alive" has a danger zone mode, where falling players are dealt extra damage if they fall on the area outside of the main fighting square.

Answer: "Super Smash Bros"

"Super Smash Bros" is a Nintendo game which takes a light approach to the fighting game genre. Instead of trying to kill your opponent or knock them unconscious, in this game the aim is to knock them out of the game stage.

Initially, the game was released in Japan only and was made on a low budget, but it proved to be successful and so was released in many other countries. There were also sequels to the game - "Super Smash Bros. Melee" and "Super Smash Bros. Brawl". The characters featured in this game are taken from several other games, such as "Mario", "Pokemon", "Star Fox" and "Donkey Kong".

Answer: "Tekken"

"Tekken" was released in 1994 and it immediately became a classic! It is distinguished from all other games of its sort by the intimate and captivating storyline which each character has. In short, "Tekken" is not just about the fighting, but getting to know each and every character and their purpose for entering the "King of Iron Fist Tournament" as you progress through the game. Nevertheless, the fighting aspect of "Tekken" is excellent. Clearly influenced by earlier games such as "Virtua Fighter", "Tekken" was the game to take the next big step in terms of graphics and complex move combinations.

The startling success of the first game led to numerous. The only characters to feature in every game were Heihachi, Nina, Paul Phoenix and Yoshimitsu. "Tekken 2" brought a new host of unlockable characters - one for each starting character who they somehow affiliated with.

Answer: "X-Men: Children of the Atom"

Being released in 1994, the graphics of this game look primitive compared to those found on the PS3 or Xbox 360, but these were very respectable at the time.

Aside from those mentioned in the question, this game features your favourite X-Men characters such as Wolverine and Cyclops, each with unique moves which are typical of their own mutant ability. This game possesses all of the classic characteristics of a good arcade game - high-jumping, hard-hitting, and with plenty of smack talk! Many of the characters are noted for the fact that many of the voices were provided by the people who did the voices on the popular animated TV series.

Answer: "Street Fighter"

As one of the first major fighting games (released 1987), the transformation in terms of graphics and gameplay when comparing the first game to the most recent installments is breathtaking.

Although countless measures were taken to provide fluid movements, detailed backgrounds and stunning attack combos, the appearance of many of the characters can still be seen as fairly basic, thus retaining the charm of the original arcade game.

Ryu is the main character in this game series and takes the fighting tournaments very seriously. He has featured on the front of many game case covers with his friend and rival, Ken. Both men are fairly similar in appearance, especially when compared to some of the odder looking characters such as the green monster, Blanka.
