Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The hero of the series is a brave, if somewhat comical knight named Dirk. What's his nickname?

Answer: Dirk the Daring

Dirk will face any danger to rescue Princess Daphne, (who is his wife in the sequel). Dirk was an original character, who was not above screaming and pratfalls. His death scenes were usually more comical than gory.
2. 'Dragon's Lair's' use of the laserdisc gave the game unprecedented graphics. What else was about the game was almost unheard of at the time?

Answer: It cost 50 cents to play, twice what a regular arcade game usually cost.

The game cost two tokens to play, but was popular in spite of the high cost. Instead of electronic 'sprites,' the player would see a variety of animated scenes and move the joystick and sword button accordingly. Unfortunately, this meant there was no room for error and it was not always obvious what Dirk was supposed to do. Lights would sometimes flash in the direction Dirk should move (or on his sword) so the player was not totally at sea.
3. Dirk must rescue Princess Daphne from a dragon, hiding in an evil wizard's castle. What is the dragon's name?

Answer: Singe

Though never mentioned in the game, in the documents and the 1984 cartoon spin-off the dragon is named Singe. Singe is the last monster Dirk must fight, just after he discovers princess Daphne. It's upon seeing the princess that Dirk says his only line in the entire game: 'Wow!'
4. What veteran Disney animator did much of the 'Dragon's Lair' animation?

Answer: Don Bluth

The developers had little money, and allegedly used 'Playboy' spreads as models for Princess Daphne. The animators also used their own voices for the characters, with the exception of the voice-over narrator.
5. When Dirk dies, what is always shown after the death scene?

Answer: A skeleton

When Dirk dies, we see a clip of a skeleton morphing into Dirk, before going on to the next life. When Dirk has used all his lives, he turns into a skeleton, which crumbles.
6. 'Dragon's Lair II' begins with Daphne (now Dirk's wife) being kidnapped by an evil wizard. Who is the very first enemy Dirk must face?

Answer: His mother-in-law

Daphne's Viking-helmed mother goes berserk at the news of her daughter's kidnapping and attacks Dirk with a rolling pin. As he rides off to escape her, he returns to the dragon's castle.
7. Daphne has been kidnapped by the wizard Mordrock. Luckily, Dirk is able to pursue her, thanks to a talking time machine. Whose spirit possesses the machine?

Answer: Mordrock's brother's

Both the time machine and Mordrock identify each other as brothers. It's never explained how or why the time machine is so possessed, though it does shout useful advice to Dirk.
8. What bonus feature appeared in 'Dragon's Lair II'?

Answer: The player can collect various objects for extra points.

During the gameplay, Dirk can collect various glowing objects for extra points. The designers originally intended for Dirk to use these extra objects in the final scene, and only players who'd collected everything got to see the long version. In the final version, there was no penalty for missing the objects, and the long version was the shown to all players who completed the adventure.

In the final scene, Dirk empties his backpack, giving the bonus items to his children.
9. Dirk travels the timestreams in search of Daphne. Which scene was planned and storyboarded, but did not make it into the final game?

Answer: A pirate ship

A sequence with Dirk battling pirates on a Caribbean ship was planned, but cut. It did make it into the third installment, 'The Curse of Mordread'. If you look carefully at the end scene of Dragon's Lair II, there is a Jolly Roger flag in the pile of goodies that Dirk presents to his children.
10. During his time travels, Dirk actually stumbles upon a Biblical scene. Which one?

Answer: The Garden of Eden

In the Garden, Dirk is hounded by angry cherubs, pursued by an amorous (and overweight) Eve, and witnesses the theft of the apple and the fall of man. The other eras he visits are the age of dinosaurs, through the looking glass ('Alice in Wonderland'), Beethoven's conservatory (where Dirk is menaced by the composer's cat), and ancient Egypt.
