Shao Khan takes over Outworld by killing Onaga with poison instead of killing him in a battle. He has magical power and possesses superhuman strength, durability, stamina, and long life. He can charge at his opponents with considerable speed and power.

Goro is an enormous figure with four arms. After defeating Great Kung Lao, he becomes the Grand Champion of the tournament, holding the title for 500 years. Shang Tsung uses him to manipulate the tournament to achieve Shao Khan's goal to dominate Earthrealm. However, the plan is thwarted by Liu Kang who defeats him and Shang Tsung to allow Earthrealm to regain control of the tournament.

Reptile is a reptilian humanoid, one of the last surviving members of his race. He aligns himself with the villains in the beginning, as he hopes his service would help to revise his race's fate. In the original game, he is a hidden opponent, establishing him as the first secret character in the game.

He can fire energy spheres called force balls. His best-known ability is to turn invisible by blending into his surroundings. He possesses sharp claws and fangs which can tear apart his opponents' faces.

He is an undead warrior whose quest is to avenge for the death of himself, his family, and his clan. He uses his weapon as a deadly whip to impale his enemies and drag them towards him with his signature cry of "Get over here!". He has the ability to summon Hellfire.

Although Kano has no supernatural powers, he uses mostly the Cybernetic Enhancements and Weapons. He does possess a special ability to tuck into a cannonball and propel himself toward his opponents. He also has a incredibly strong and powerful, as he can punch through a person body.

He takes part in the original tournament with the intention to steal from the tournament's host, Shang Tsung, whose palace is filled with gold and other treasures.

Sonya Blade is a military officer with the Special Forces, the only female in the original 1992 game. She is involved in the tournament as she is pursuing the criminal leader Kano. She has the ability to shoot pink energy rings from her hands and could kill finish her enemies with the Fire Kiss. Her fatal move is to blow a kiss at her opponent and set them on fire.

The two Chinese characters are ninja warriors of the Lin Kuei clan, Bi-Han and Kuai Liang. They wear blue attires and have the ability to control ice in many forms to freeze their opponents into solid. They can create ice duplicates to help them in their battles, After Bi-Han is killed by Scorpion, his younger brother Kuai Liang takes over his mantle as Sub-Zero.
