Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Kalos region has three starter Pokemon. Fennekin is the fire type one of these, but what real animal is it based on?

Answer: Fox

The fire type Fennekin is based on a fennec fox, which are highly demanded as pets in the real world. However, they are considered to be an "exotic" pet, which means they are not legal everywhere. They are the smallest species of fox, and are defined by their large ears!
2. The bug type gym leader in Unova has many precious Pokemon. One of these is Dwebble (the preevolution of Crustle), but which real animal is it based on?

Answer: Hermit crab

Dwebble is based on a hermit crab, but instead of living inside a shell, it lives inside a rock! Hermit crabs regularly have to change their shell when they outgrow the one they are using. Some species can live in water, others can't so be careful if you ever have the chance to hold one.
3. Elesa may be a supermodel in the Unova region, but she is also an electric type gym leader. One of her favourite Pokemon is Emolga, but do you know what it is based on?

Answer: Flying squirrel

Emolga is based on a flying squirrel, which despite the name, does not actually fly. They use large flaps of skin to help them glide from one tree to another. They have excellent night vision too, and are very nimble. However, if you live outside of Asia, it's likely that you will never see one as 90% of all flying squirrels are only found in Asian countries.
4. In Johto, it's not uncommon to see a Wooper (which later evolves into Quagsire) in the wild, but do you know what real animal is it based upon?

Answer: Axolotl

Wooper is based on an axolotl, a funny looking creature that lives in water. They are quite easy to take care of which makes them popular pets. However, in the wild they are critically endangered, as they are slow moving and relatively harmless. A fun fact about them is that they can regenerate each of their limbs up to five times!
5. Heracross is a rare Pokemon in Johto, and sadly has no evolution line. It is actually based on a rare creature in the real world too. Which creature is it meant to look like?

Answer: Rhinoceros beetle

Rhinoceros beetles are not actually related to the large horned creature that you would expect to see in a zoo. Instead, they get their name because of the large horn they have too. They are incredibly strong, and so are sometimes known as the "Hercules" beetle. On average, they grow to a size of six centimeters, making them one of the larger species of beetle to exist currently.
6. Deep in the Hoenn region, the legendary Pokemon Kyogre slumbers as it protects the seas. Do you know what real animal this legendary creature was based on?

Answer: Whale shark

Is it a whale? Is it a shark? Well, it's kind of both! Don't panic though, whale sharks are actually the least aggressive type of shark. They are gentle, peaceful creatures that have been known to come to shallower waters every once in a while. There are even stories of humans riding these creatures, that is how unbothered they are by us!
7. Perhaps one of the more well known Kanto Pokemon, Psyduck constantly has headaches and is confused about what is going on. Do you know what real animal influenced its design?

Answer: Platypus

The platypus is a very strange creature, with a mouth shaped like a duck's bill. They are the only surviving member of what used to be a much larger species of animal. There are lots of interesting facts about them, but perhaps the most interesting is that they are one of the only mammals that lays eggs, along with the Echidna.
8. Sandslash is a Pokemon that was first introduced in Kanto, as a ground type. It was later given an Alolan form, but do you know what animal the original design was taken from?

Answer: Pangolin

Specifically, it was taken from the Chinese pangolin. These creatures are nocturnal which means you're more likely to see it at night. They are critically endangered in the wild though, as their scales are highly sought after by humans. They mainly eat insects and are related to the more common anteater.
9. Ash Ketchum famously owned thirty Tauros when he went slightly wild at the safari zone. He later sent them to a good home, but do you know what real animal this Pokemon was based on?

Answer: Buffalo

The American buffalo, also known as bison, is a mammal found mostly in North America. It is the largest mammal to exist in this region, and on average stands at 5 feet tall and 1000-2000 pounds in weight when fully grown. They are herbivores which means they only eat plants, so although they are threatening in size they are only a small risk to humans.
10. On the beaches of Alola, you can often find people throwing Pyukumuku back into the sea. Do you know what aquatic creature this sea dwelling Pokemon is based on though?

Answer: Sea cucumber

Despite the name, you can't find a sea cucumber in the supermarket. You can find them down in the depths of the seabed though. They are scavengers and many species have tentacles that surround their mouth to help them gather food. Like the Pokemon they inspired, they can shoot their insides out of their body as a defense mechanism, and can regenerate these insides afterwards.
