Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You can play several classes of characters in "Quest for Glory 1". Your choice will impact the options you'll have for getting through different situations you'll face. Which of the following is NOT one of the available character classes?

Answer: Paladin

The Fighter will have high skills with a sword, as well as good strength and health levels. He'll tackle problems by slashing through them, of course. This is the most "basic" choice, and puts more emphasis on combat and less on puzzle-solving.

Magic Users are very powerful - there are about 10 spells available in the first game of the series, but to use them you'll have to find people who'll teach you. Magic Users often need to use their spells to solve problems, or assist in combat.

A thief, quite naturally, is agile and handy with a lockpick. They can also throw daggers very well, and sneak better than any other adventurer type. Thieves usually make a lot of money in the early portion of the game because they can break into people's houses to steal their property. Of course, you'll need to find a fence who'll buy stolen items from you. Thieves rely mostly on puzzle-solving skills, and prefer to avoid combat when possible.

The Paladin class is not available in "Quest for Glory 1". However, in the next installment of the series, a "Fighter" can get the chance to prove his worth and become a Paladin (protector of good), in which case you'll begin to develop magical skills that provide protection and healing.
2. Our hero begins his quest as he enters the town of Spielburg, high up in a mountainous regions. He has come to rid the land of evil, and make a name for himself in the process. What season is it?

Answer: Early spring

The entire "Quest for Glory" series is set in an alternate universe which, while similar to our own geographically and culturally, is filled with magic and wonderous creatures right out of the best Fantasy novels.

Spielburg (literally "Game-Town", in German) is only the first location of many that you will visit during the series. In the first game, you'll wander around a Central-European countryside (well, forest, mainly), and meet goblins, brigands, witches and lords.
3. The Butcher and Baker of Spielburg are missing. Where are they?

Answer: Playing "Go Fish" at the local tavern

Spielburg has several shops, including a General Store, Fruit&Veg stand, a Tavern, and even a Magic Shop. The entire town is protected by a magical aura that works only during the day, but prevents any aggressive activities in town. At night, however, you should be careful if you want to walk around the streets.
4. There's a little old lady living in town. If you're playing the thief, You can break into her house for some nice and valuable loot. As you sneak around her house at night, you'll have to watch out for a little black cat. Why is that?

Answer: The cat is really a morphed black panther

It's a guard-cat! One way to keep the cat appeased would be to feed and pet it every so often. This will keep it out of your way. The old lady's house has many nice valuable things you could steal... shame on you!

You can also break into the Sheriff's house in this game, and there are many valuable things in there as well. Just watch out for the Goon!
5. The Magic Store owner is a powerful Wizard named Zara. She's not fully human, and can tell you a lot about magic itself, the magical properties of the land surrounding the town, and other magic users living in the area. What is the name of Zara's familiar, a black winged imp?

Answer: Damiano

Zara can sell you several important magical spells. This is crucial for the Magic User, who only starts with one weak spell that enhances weapon damage.

Magic Users aren't the only characters who can use magic, they're just much better at it. If you want to, you can spend a large number of "character creation points" to give a magical ability to your Fighter or Thief character. While your character will probably still be better at other stuff, he'll at least be able to use Magic once in a while to open up different options for solving problems, and enhance his abilities in combat with magical spells.
6. Most towns you'll visit in the "Quest for Glory" series have an Adventurer's Guildhouse, a place for adventurers to meet, train, and talk about their adventures. In Spielburg, the Adventurer's Guild will have many monster heads mounted on the walls, with plaques telling the story of the adventurer who slew the monster. Which of the monsters below, whose head is mounted in the guild hall, does not appear elsewhere in the game?

Answer: Dragon

There are nine different kinds of monsters you'll have to fight (in melee combat mode) in the game. In order of strength, they are:

1) Purple Saurus
2) Goblin (These sometimes appear in groups though!)
3) Brigand
4) Mantray
5) Cheetaur
6) Troll
7) Ogre
8) Saurus Rex
9) Minotaur

There are also other strange creatures out there which could easily pose a threat. Antwerps, for instance, are virtually indestructible.

There are no dragons though. The last one who lived in the region was slain by the local lord, Baron Spielburg, and his head is mounted on the wall to this day.
7. There's a healer living in a small hut just north of Spielburg town. She's lost her magical ring, and offers a nice reward for its return. The ring was taken by a birdlike reptile living in a nest on tree outside her house. Which of these is NOT a way to get the ring back?

Answer: Capture the lizard and convince it to return the ring.

There are usually several different ways to solve every dilemma you come across in the game. Your character's particular skills and strengths will determine which of these solutions is best (or easiest) to accomplish. Still, at character creation time you can spend character points to gain abilities that you wouldn't normally have, allowing your character to solve each dilemma using a different set of skills.

This "Cross-Classing" is easiest with the Thief character type - thieves only lack the Magic skill, so they can easily buy that skill to get a complete set of possibilities. Of course, they'll need to spend a lot of time (and/or money) to improve all of their skills, if they wish to survive the adventure as easily as "regular" classed characters do.
8. During the game, you'll have to do quite a bit of traipsing around Spielburg Valley, through dense and dangerous woods. In one place in the forest you will locate a fox, caught in a hunter's trap. Where does this occur?

Answer: East of the Spielburg gate

Navigating the forest is tricky, because many of the "screens" look very similar. It's best to make a map of the area as you go. Fortunately, there are only about 40 or so "screens" in the forest, and they're all neatly arranged to make map-making much easier. Map-making in "Quest for Glory" games is part of the fun!
9. A frost giant by the name of Brauggi has come down the mountainside to seek food for his starving family. Speaking in rhymes of verse, the giant will ask you to bring him food, in exchange for a reward. You'll have to buy quite a lot of apples to appease this giant. How many apples must you give Brauggi, and what reward will you receive?

Answer: 50 Apples, for a glowing gem

Many mythical creatures appear in the "Quest for Glory" series, each befitting the region of the particular adventure. In the first game, among others you'll meet a Dryad, a Kobold, a pair of Centaurs, and even a powerful fairy-mage who'll be a focal point (and romantic interest!) for the plot in most of the sequels too.

The Glowing Gem is a very important item, as it will allow you entry to the Witch's Hut, later in the game.
10. Castle Spielburg is situated just north of town. The local lord, Baron Spielburg, is reclusive and will not grant your audience. But there are a few things you can do in the castle. Which of these options is NOT something you can do there?

Answer: Practice archery

The Baron has a curse on his head, given by a powerful witch that has taken residence in Spielburg valley. As a result of that curse, both his children have disappeared - The young Baronet was abducted by a magic-using Kobold, while the Baron's daughter was taken by the local brigands. Things look very grim for the Baron, which is where you come in.

There is no archery in any of the "Quest for Glory" games, but you can practice dagger-throwing at the archery range outside the southern wall of Spielburg town.
11. Henry the Hermit lives in a cave beside the waterfall, south of Spielburg. If you manage to visit him (it can be tricky), you can sleep in his cave - assuming you don't mind the smell. Or the mosquitoes. Or a hay mattress. But Henry is a bit more useful than that - he knows a powerful magic spell which he uses to keep his cave safe from the monsters in the woods. Which spell is it?

Answer: Trigger

Trigger is useful for setting off hidden magic. Its use is limited, but at the proper moments it can save you from death!

Other spells in this game are: Dazzle, Calm, Open, Zap, Flame Dart, Detect Magic, and Fetch. You start the game with Zap only - it increases the damage your weapon inflicts by a small amount. Not a very useful spell.
12. Erasmus the Wizard lives in a mansion on top of Mount Zauberberg, northeast of town. His house is a true anomaly, and he has quite a collection of souvenirs from unlikely places. Erasmus has an animal familiar called Fenrus. What kind of animal is he?

Answer: Rat

Fenrus is actually a magic-user, and can also talk. You'd wish he couldn't, because Erasmus and Fenrus can't help but break into long strings of corny jokes which they play between themselves. Erasmus and Fenrus also appear in later games in the series.
13. If you know certain spells, you could try playing Erasmus' favourite game, called "Mage's Maze". If you win this game, you will be awarded a magic spell. Which of the following spells is NOT a requirement for playing Mage's Maze?

Answer: Detect Magic

Mage's Maze is one of three minigames inside "Quest for Glory". You'll have to get a... buggy little creature from one end of the playing field to the other, through a series of tunnels and cliffs. You do this by clearing rocks blocking those tunnels, and placing ladders on cliffsides. At the same time, your opponent will try to do the same thing with his creature. In effect, you'll be trying to block your opponent's path at the same time, by blocking his tunnels with rocks, and moving his ladders away. You do all this with four magical spells, each serving a different purpose. You'd better have good experience with magic, because you're limited in the number of spells you can cast every day.

The other two minigames in "Quest for Glory" are melee combat (you'll see lots of that), and Dag-Nab-It which is a sort of dartboard game played with throwing-daggers.
14. The pelt of the white stag you meet in the woods is worth enough money to buy chainmail armor.

Answer: False

Actually, if you try to attack the stag, you will not be able to finish the game. The stag will guide you to the home of a Dryad, a tree-spirit, who will give you a special reward you require to complete the game. You'll have to perform a quest for her in return. Of course, if you attack the stag, she will kill you.

Chainmail armor costs 50 gold pieces, and will grant damage reduction in combat.
15. What is the color of the Head Meep, the only one who'll talk to you?

Answer: Green

Meeps look like overgrown furballs with two eyes and a pair of chicken legs. They live in a community where the meeps burrow tunnels into the ground in a network, then cover all the openings with rocks. Meeps will then peek out from under those rocks to make sure the coast is clear. There are many colors of Meeps, but only the Green one can talk, and he is also the Head Meep.

Meep Fur is a magical ingredient for the powerful Dispel Potion. The Meeps can also give you a magical scroll, containing the "Detect Magic" spell.
