Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Spider: The Video Game" had a lazy way of naming its music. Rather than give a singular tune a proper name, the composers instead named a track after the levels it was used in. Which of these tracks are NOT in the game?

Answer: Across the Desk, Tool Shed, The Basement

The game is about a scientist that creates a cybernetic spider that is controlled mentally. However, when a rival corporation comes to steal the technology, his mind is accidentally trapped within the spider. The player is then tasked with controlling the spider through the game in pursuit of the attackers.

This journey takes players through two laboratories, a factory, a sewer, a museum and a city. A tool shed is never seen in the game.
2. "Final Fantasy Tactics" took a more tactical RPG approach to the traditional series formula and it wound up being one of the best games in the franchise. The game's soundtrack is also one of the most popular in the series. One of the battle themes in the game however is rather... disturbing. What is it called?

Answer: Bloody Excrement

When this track first plays, the player's party is hunting down the remnants of the Death Corps who are malnourished, stuck in ragged clothing and are forced to hide out in the decrepit Thieves' Den in the middle of a rainstorm. Symptoms of malnutrition include hypertension, impaired memory, dry eyes and yes, even bloody excrement hence the name of the track.
3. "Castlevania" has been revered for its music almost more than its gameplay. Having created some of the most iconic video game music there is, it's only natural that the franchise occasionally reuse some older tracks. Which of these games did NOT feature the iconic 'Bloody Tears' track?

Answer: "Castlevania"

'Bloody Tears' was introduced in "Castlevania II: Simon's Quest" and served as the game's main theme. Since then, it has been used in at least 13 games throughout the series, including "Castlevania: Symphony of the Night". The Japanese exclusive Sega Saturn port of the game features two new areas with 'Bloody Tears' playing in one of them.
4. In "Ecco the Dolphin", players play as Ecco as he swims across the ocean in search of his missing pod. The last level before the final boss fight is named after a Pink Floyd song. Can you guess which one?

Answer: "Welcome To The Machine"

Having traveled back through time and gotten sucked up in the mysterious cyclone along with his pod, Ecco arrives at Planet Vortex. There he is thrown into an auto-scrolling level that is apparently used for processing the Vortex's food. It is easily the hardest level in the game and if players get eaten during the final boss fight, they are sent back to this level.
5. "Megaman X5" was originally slated to be the end of the "Megaman X" series. As such, many references to previous games in the franchise were used from boss fights to obtained weapons. The game's intro is a medley of which two "Megaman" tunes?

Answer: The "Megaman 3" intro & 'Zero's Sacrifice' from "Megaman X"

References from the game include a weapon called Dark Hold that works just like Flash Stopper from "Megaman 2", another weapon called T-Thunder that fires three electrical beams just like Thunder Beam from the original "Megaman" and a black version of the Yellow Devil boss from the classic "Megaman" series.

The Mavericks in the American version of the game are named after members of Guns N' Roses, an act on behalf of the translator.
6. 'Gaum-Hermer' is one of the most iconic boss battle themes of the 1990s. While certainly not much in the way of melodic variety, it still manages to instill a twinge of fear in players as they battle against their enemies. What game produced this classic track?

Answer: "Altered Beast"

"Altered Beast" is a classic Sega Genesis title in which Zeus resurrects a warrior and sends him off on a quest to rescue his daughter Athena from the clutches of Neff. Absorbing orbs from blue bull-like creatures would allow the warrior to transform into half-human, half-animal hybrids such as a werewolf, a weredragon and a werebear.

In the original arcade game, the ending implies that the entire game was nothing more than a movie being filmed.
7. "Metal Gear Solid" revolutionized the video game industry with its stealth-based mechanics, fantastic story and memorable characters. A Japan exclusive version of the game called "Metal Gear Solid: Integral" played a remix of Solid Snake's theme from "Metal Gear 2" if a certain frequency was contacted. What frequency was it?

Answer: 140.85

Solid Snake's theme originated in "Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake" for the MSX2 in Japan. Both this game and the original "Metal Gear" which was also released on the MSX2 are viewed as the 'true' games in the series as the NES "Metal Gear" games were reprogrammed without the consent or knowledge of the series' creator Hideo Kojima.

As for "Metal Gear Solid: Integral", the virtual reality training in the game featured many more missions than the original PS1 version though these missions were eventually made available stateside under the name "Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions".
8. In "Klonoa: Door to Phantomile", young Klonoa is tasked with heading to the forest to contact Granny, a wise forest dweller. Upon his arrival however, he and his friend Huepow find that the forest is dying. What is the name of the track that plays during this level?

Answer: Sad Forest Drum

Klonoa and Huepow later discover that the reason for the forest drying up is because the Jugpot waterfall has now begun to flow backwards. After freeing King Dolph from the dark magic of Ghadius, he restores the waterfall's natural flow and life returns to the forest.

As players progress through the second forest level, the newly revived plants will help Klonoa reach places that he otherwise couldn't have.
9. Dancing can be a way of telling a story through articulate movement. Somewhat similarly, final boss battles require precision movements in order to assure survival and victory. Which of these final boss themes are NOT affiliated with dancing?

Answer: The final boss theme from "Donkey Kong Country 2"

The Mana Beast in "Secret of Mana" is fought to the tune of 'Meridian Dance', "Castlevania: Rondo of Blood" introduced the franchise to the iconic 'Illusionary Dance' and almost every gamer alive has heard of "Final Fantasy VI" and its super famous final boss theme 'Dancing Mad'.

'Crocodile Cacophony' from "Donkey Kong Country 2" however does not pertain to dancing. Instead, a cacophony is a 'harsh, discordant mixture of sounds'.
10. Let's take a different approach to these video game music questions. Can you tell me which game these tracks are from? 'Rakugakinoto', 'The Farthest Town', 'Earth Wind Ran Out', 'Graffiti is a Friend'

Answer: "Magic Pengel: The Quest for Color"

"Magic Pengel: The Quest for Color" is an RPG for the PS2 in which players can literally draw their party members into existence. The further into the game one gets, the more body parts they'll be able to draw. The battle system functions much like Rock, Paper, Scissors resulting in an occasionally unbalanced fight.

The story also features some glaring plotholes that can be distracting at times.
