Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This quote is from the sixteenth president, noted for his unhandsome visage. "If I had two faces, would I wear this one?" Who was this?

Answer: Abraham Lincoln

This was in reply to Stephen Douglas, who, during an 1858 debate accused Lincoln of being two faced. Lincoln won the debate but lost the election for a seat in the House of Representatives.
2. When asked if he enjoyed music, this nineteenth-century president and ex-general replied "I know two songs. One is Yankee Doodle and the other isn't". Who was he?

Answer: Ulysses S. Grant

Grant viewed music as a distraction and may have had what is euphemistically called 'a tin ear'. As the General in Command of the Union Armies in 1864 and 1865, he was known to ask that regimental bands not play while on the march.
3. This Ohioan became the 29th president. He once said "I don't know much about Americanism but it's a damned good word with which to carry an election." He succeeded Woodrow Wilson in office. Who was he?

Answer: Warren G. Harding

Harding was discussing campaign strategy. His administration has been noted by many historians as one of the worst ever, riddled by scandal, which included Teapot Dome, an attempt to lease government oil reserve lands to companies owned by friends of his cronies.
4. This president was elected in 1888, but failed to win reelection in 1892. He was one of the very few presidents to lose the popular vote, but win the election by a majority of votes in the electoral college. He said, "We Americans have no commission from God to police the world." Who was he?

Answer: Benjamin Harrison

He was a highly ethical, honest man. He failed, somehow, to inspire the public and was not able to win a second term. He was the grandson of another president, William Henry Harrison.
5. "I do not choose to run for the presidency in nineteen-twenty-eight." This was the decision communicated to the press via written letter by an incumbent president. He was from Vermont.

Answer: Calvin Coolidge

He had been vice president under Warren G. Harding, and took over when Harding died in office in 1923. He served until the inauguration of Herbert Hoover. He was known as "Silent Cal" due to his brevity of speech.
6. This ex-general was the 34th president. After two terms, he left office, making a farewell speech in which he said, "We must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex." Who was he?

Answer: Dwight D. Eisenhower

He was warning of the danger of undue influence of an overly large military and its ties with big business. He brought an end to the Korean conflict. The rest of his presidency was marked by slow escalation of the Cold War and the completion of the all-inclusive federal highway system that we enjoy today.
7. "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." This was in the inaugural address of which president, who had also served as the 44th governor of the state of New York?

Answer: Franklin D. Roosevelt

He was not speaking of any external threat, but of the Great Depression which was choking the country. The only four-term president, his terms were marked by a crippling depression which only ended with the coming of World War II. Among his accomplishments were the advent of Social Security and massive public works projects.
8. "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." This New England-born president delivered these ringing words during his inauguration speech. Who was he?

Answer: John F. Kennedy

Actually he borrowed the phrase from General Omar Bradley, who in turn had borrowed it from the Roman statesman and orator, Marcus Tullius Cicero. Kennedy's term is remembered in large part by the failed invasion of Cuba and his stare-down of Nikita Kruschev during the Cuban missile crisis.
9. He said, "Carry the battle to them. Don't let them bring it to you. Put them on the defensive and don't ever apologize for anything." He presided over the end of the Second World War. Who was this feisty president?

Answer: Harry S. Truman

Harry was noted for saying what he meant and meaning what he said. In giving a reason for the firing of Douglas MacArthur, he simply said that MacArthur forgot who the boss was. In 1948, he was given almost no chance of defeating the then-Governor of New York, Thomas Dewey.
10. This president is known as "The Father of the Constitution". He said, "All men having power ought to be distrusted to a certain degree." He was a Virginian. Who was he?

Answer: James Madison

Born in 1751, he helped frame the Constitution, and was instrumental in getting it ratified by the states. He was Secretary of State under Thomas Jefferson and guided the completion of the Louisiana Purchase which effectively doubled the size of the United States.
