Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which state of India is Malayalam most spoken? It is this state's official language.

Answer: Kerala

Kerala, named after the coconut tree, was believed to have formed when Parasurama threw his ax and brought the place form under the sea.
2. One of the most useful things to know when first learning a language is how to say "I don't know this language" in that language! So how do you say "I don't know Malayalam" in "Malayalam"?

Answer: Enikku malayalam ariyilla

"Enikku malayalam ariyaam" means "I know Malayalam".

"Mujko malayalam nahi aata" is Hindi for "I don't know Malayalam".

"Enikku malayalam aavum" actually doesn't make sense in Malayalam but is loosely translated as "I can Malayalam".
3. You said you don't know Malayalam but the hotel receptionist doesn't understand your language. So, using your handy Malayalam phrasebook, how do you tell him you're hungry?

Answer: Enikku vishakkunu

"Enikku dahikunu" means "I am thirsty".

"Enikku urakkam varunnu" means "I am sleepy".

"Ente vayar vedinikunnu" means "My stomach hurts".
4. The attendant hears you and says "Ente pinnil varu saare". What does that mean in Malayalam?

Answer: Come behind me sir

Here is the word-by-word breakdown:

"Ente" - "me/my"

"pinnil" - "behind"

"varu" - "come"

"saare" - "sir"

(As you can see, Malayalam grammar is not the same as that of English).
5. You are in the restaurant, and the waiter comes up and declares "Innu choodu chor undu". What is on the menu today?

Answer: Rice

"Chor" is Malayalam for rice. It is the staple food of Kerala, so is sure to be on the menu in any local restaurant.
6. The waiter also says "Innu saambarum avialum theeyalum undu." He is telling you what else is on the menu, so can you guess what the suffix "-um" means in Malayalam?

Answer: And

The waiter proudly declares that they also have "saabar", "avial" and "theeyal", which are varieties of curry commonly found in Kerala.
7. After all that food you retire to your room. While you try to sleep, the phone rings. You answer, and the receptionist says "Ningalkku oru adhiti undu". What did he say in Malayalam now?

Answer: You have a guest

Malayalees (and Indians in general) treat guests with great respect. So comes the saying " "adhiti devo bhava" - "the guest is god".
8. The tour guide sticks his head into your room. "Sorry for disturbing your sleep but I recall that you have booked a tour of Kochi kayal today" he says. What geographical feature is a "kayal"? Hint - where would Kochi be?

Answer: Lake

Kochi is quite famous for its houseboats on Lake Kochi.
9. Then the guide tosses you a can of insect repellent, saying "Ivide kore kothu undu". What are these "kothus" that you'll be facing?

Answer: Mosquitoes

There are a lot of pesky mosquitoes in the Kerala region. Exterminators beware.
10. Now that you have played my quiz, I would like to say "nandi". What am I telling you in Malayalam?

Answer: Thank you

"Nandi" very much in fact!

Has anyone noticed yet? Malayalam is a palindrome, reading the same backwards as forwards. It also has alternating vowels and consonants.
