1. What was the name of Mrs. James Monroe?

Answer: Elizabeth

Elizabeth married James when she was not yet 17, in 1786. She was in poor health most of his presidency and did not celebrate many functions with him. The biggest thing she did while they were in the White House was marry their daughter off. That was even quite low-key though.
2. Mrs. Andrew Jackson?

Answer: Rachel

Rachel was never actually a First Lady. Andrew Jackson was to be sworn in on March 28, 1829 but his dear wife Rachel died in December, 1828 and never saw her husband become the President.
3. Mrs. William Henry Harrison?

Answer: Anna

Anna was sick at the time of William's inauguration. So she stayed back in their home in Indiana, and was going to come one month later to be with William in Washington D.C. Unfortunately, Mr. Harrison died exactly one month after he became President. Mrs. Harrison never came to Washington D.C.
4. Mrs. John Tyler?

Answer: Letitia

Letitia, better known as 'Lizzy' was the first wife to die while her husband was serving as president in the White House.
5. Mrs. James Polk?

Sarah and James never were able to have children together. Sarah was also a devout Presbyterian and she refused to allow alcohol in the White House. She also refused to attend horse races and theatre.
6. Mrs. Millard Fillmore?

Abigail had a permanently injured ankle that caused her great pain. She did not attend many social events, but when she did, she had to stay seated. She unfortunately died within weeks after the presidency was over.
7. Mrs. Franklin Pierce?

Misery seemed to follow poor Jane Pierce. Her first son died at three days old, her second son died of typhus at one year. Their third son was healthy and looking forward to their upcoming move to the White House in March, when he was tragically killed by a train on Jan. 6, 1853.

The inauguration went on as planned, but there was no ball and no type of party. Mrs. Pierce was very unhappy and never wanted to be a First Lady.
8. Mrs. Ulysses Grant?

Julia grew up a very wealthy girl. Her father was a huge plantation owner with many slaves. He never wanted Julia to marry 'Ulysses' because he 'would never make anything of himself'. I guess 'Ulysses' proved his father-in-law wrong!
9. Mrs. Rutherford Hayes?

Answer: Lucy

Lucy gave birth to 8 children, but only 5 grew up to adulthood. She also banned alcohol in the White House, and became known as 'Lemonade Lucy' because of her own prohibition.
10. Mrs. James Garfield?

Answer: Lucretia

Known by her friends as 'Crete'. When President Garfield was shot, Crete was gravely ill herself. She stayed by his side the entire three months until he died.
11. Mrs. Grover Cleveland?

Answer: Frances

Frances and Grover were married in the White House. Grover was 27 years older than his new bride.
12. Mrs. Benjamin Harrison?

Answer: Caroline Lavinia Scott

Mrs. Harrison established the collection of fine china that's still being used at the White House today. Caroline died while Benjamin was still serving as the President. He later went on to marry Mary Scott.
13. Mrs. William McKinley?

Ida had very poor health. She had seizures often. When William would see her have signs of a seizure, he would hold her in his arms and hold a hankerchief over her face to block the public from seeing her in that state.
14. Mrs. William Taft?

Helen, aka 'Nellie' LOVED social gatherings. She would hold parties at the White House as often as she could. For her and William's silver anniversary she had a party for several thousand guests on the lawn of the White House.
15. The second Mrs. Woodrow Wilson?

When Pres. Wilson had a stroke in office and was left partially paralyzed, Mrs. Wilson took over many of the routine duties and details of the government.
16. Mrs. Warren Harding?

Answer: Florence

At age 19, Florence was already divorced and had a small child. She met Warren then, he was a mere 16. Four years later they married. They never had children together.
17. Mrs. Calvin Coolidge?

Answer: Grace

Calvin was extremely shy and Grace was very witty and loud. She often talked at functions more than he did. She was once awarded the title of 'One of Twelve Greatest Living Americans', by the National Institute of Social Sciences.
18. Mrs. Herbert Hoover?

Answer: Lou

Lou worked for up-and-coming movements during her husband's years in office. Her most recognized is the start of the Girl Scouts.
19. Mrs. Harry Truman?

Answer: Elizabeth

Best known by her nick-name of 'Bess', Mrs. Truman didn't really like being a First Lady and only did what was necessary. She often stayed in the private quarters of the White House and spent time reading and listening to music.
20. Mrs. Lyndon Johnson?

Answer: Claudia

Most everyone knows Mrs. Johnson as 'Lady Bird', a nick-name she was given as a young girl. Lady Bird was very involved with the start of the Head Start Program for preschoolers while her husband Lyndon was in office.
