Canada Day was originally known as "Dominion Day" and celebrates the day on which, in 1867, the signing of the Constitution Act brought three colonies (Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick) into a single united dominion within the British Empire. It was renamed "Canada Day" in 1982 upon the passing of the Canada Act, which ended the British parliament's power to autonomously pass laws in Canada.

Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China (PRC) and has been since 1 July 1997, when the United Kingdom transferred sovereignty of Hong Kong to the PRC, ending 156 years of British colonial rule. The day is usually marked with fireworks, but in recent years there have also been significant demonstrations held against Chinese rule.

Rwanda celebrates its independence from Belgium in 1962 on 1 July. It was a long and difficult road to independence following tensions between the Hutus and Tutsis (being the two main ethnic and social groups of the country at that time), which had culminated in the Rwandan Revolution of 1959. After the revolution, Belgium agreed to democratic elections and, after a referendum in 1961, agreed to allow Rwanda to become a republic.

Also known as "National Festival", Bastille Day is the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille, a political prison in Paris, by French revolutionaries in 1789. Although there were only 7 prisoners held there at the time, the Bastille was considered a symbol of monarchy and its abuse of power and its storming and destruction is widely considered by the French to be a turning point in the revolution and the eventual establishment of the French republic. The day is traditionally celebrated with military parades and fireworks.

3. Burmese Martyrs' Day, Liberation Day (Nicaragua)

Burmese Martyrs' Day commemorates the assassination of 8 leaders of the country's pre-independence government, and a bodyguard, in 1947 by a rival political group. Soon after the assassination, Burma achieved independence from Britain in 1948. The day usually begins with a visit by government officials to the Martyrs' Mausoleum in Yangon.

Liberation Day in Nicaragua is celebrated to remember the day on which the National Liberation Army defeated the Somoza family dictatorship in the Nicaraguan Revolution after 3 decades of their rule. In recent years it is mostly a political celebration for members of the Sandinista National Liberation Front, Nicaragua's leading political party.
4. King's Birthday (Lesotho), South Korean Constitution Day

In Lesotho, the birthday of King Letsie III is celebrated on 17th July each year as a public holiday. Bon in 1963, King Letsie III has ruled Lesotho since 1990, except for a short time in 1996 when his father Moshoeshoe II returned to power and was killed in a car crash later that year. The day is often celebrated with festivities including a 21-gun salute, prayers and military parades.

Constitution Day in South Korea is also known as "Jeheonjeol" and marks the day that the South Korean constitution was issued in 1948. The date matches the founding date of the Joseon dynasty, the last and longest lasting dynasty of the kingdom of Korea. Each year, a ceremony is held by the government and the public take part in smaller celebrational activities such as parties and races.
5. Pioneer Day (Utah, USA), Simon Bolivar's Birthday

Pioneer Day is celebrated in Utah to commemorate the arrival of the Mormons into the Salt Lake Valley, where they would eventually found Salt Lake City, in 1847. It is often celebrated by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (taking commemorative walks along the Mormon Trail and re-enacting the entry of the pioneers into the area.

Simon Bolivar is a pivotal historical figure revered across South America for his role in liberating the South American continent from Spanish rule. he is often known as "El Libertador". In the early 1800s, Bolivar led Venezuela, Colombia, Panama, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia to freedom from Spain. His birthday is celebrated in many South American countries but in Venezuela the occasion is particularly popular, with military parades and street parties being held to celebrate.

Orangemen's Day is celebrated by protestants in Northern Ireland and commemorates the Glorious Revolution of 1688 in which William of Orange, a protestant king, triumphed over James II at the Battle of the Boyne and led to Protestant rule of the Great Britain and Ireland. The day is also known as the "Glorious Twelfth" and is celebrated by marches, fireworks and celebrations of British rule. However, it is also usually marked by violence as around half of the population of Northern Ireland remains Catholic and opposed to British rule.

Kiribati celebrates its independence from the United Kingdom, having become a sovereign state in 1979, on 12th July each year. Prior to its independence, Kiribati had been known as the "Gilbert Islands". Upon its independence, the name "Kiribati", being the Gilbertese spelling of "Gilberts", as chosen.
7. Guanacaste Day, Feast of Saint James the Apostle, Puerto Rico Constitution Day

Guanacaste Day is a Costa Rican holiday that is also known as 'Annexation of Nicoya Day'. It marks the annexation of Guanacaste (formerly a part of Nicaragua) as a new province of Costa Rica in 1824 following a successful referendum. The holiday is observed throughout Costa Rica but with most emotion in Guanacaste, where the concerts, fireworks and dances are held and traditional Costa Rican street food is served.

The Feast of Saint James the Apostle is a Christian festival celebrated mostly in the Basque country provinces of Spain and in particular in Santiago as St James' remains are said to be buried beneath the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela. Many people make a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, hoping arrive on or just before the feast day. Many pilgrimage routes are marked by scallop shells, to commemorate St James' past as a fisherman in Galilea and his taking of the road that helped him discover his spirit.

Prior to 1952, 25th July was a holiday in Puerto Rico known as "occupation Day" and commemorated the arrival of US forces in 1898. However, upon the introduction of a new constitution in July 1952, the holiday became known as "Constitution Day" and is now marked by a commemorative state ceremony each year.
8. US Independence Day, Philippine-American Friendship Day

Independence Day is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the Declaration of Independence of the United States. On 4th July 1776, following the defeat of the British forces in the American Revolutionary War, the Continental Congress declared that the thirteen American colonies were "united, free, and independent states" and no longer subject to British rule or influence. Originally it was celebrated by large crowd gatherings and bonfires, Independence Day is now celebrated widely across the US and its dominions and is marked by fireworks, parades, and singing. A salute of one gun for each state, called the "salute to the union," is fired at noon at each military base.


Originally, 4th July was a Philippine holiday named "Independence Day" and commemorated the signing of the Treaty of Manila, which granted Philippine independence from the United States in 1946. Later, the celebration was moved to 12th June to coincide with the date on which, in 1898, the Philippine Declaration of Independence from Spain was issued. "Philippine Republic Day" was created in its place and, as it coincides with US Independence Day, it is now also known as "Philippine-American Friendship Day".
9. Throne Day (Morocco), Martyr's Day (South Sudan)

In Morocco, "Throne Day" celebrates the crowning of King Mohammed VI in 1999. it is marked each year by the King giving a public address on television called the "Throne Speech" and various other public events.

During the Second Sudanese Civil War (between 1983 and 2005), John Garang de Mabior led the Sudan People's Liberation Army. he was killed in a helicopter crash on 30th July 2005 and many in South Sudan suspected foul play, leading to the marking of the day as "Martyr's Day". Following the end of the war, South Sudan voted for its independence by referendum in 2011.
10. Day of the Flemish Community, Bandoneón Day

In the Flemish community of Belgium (which is mostly situated in Flanders), 11th July marks the Flemish victory against the French at the Battle of the Golden Spurs in 1302 following a rebellion by the Flemish against the French king. The holiday has been observed in Flanders since 1973 when criteria for certain aspects of insignia and anthems for the Dutch Cultural Community were prescribed.

A Bandoneón is a concertina played in South America and famous for its inclusion in tango ensembles. Bandoneón Day is celebrated in Argentina to mark the birth of musician Aníbal Troilo in 1914, a conductor, composer and Bandoneón player who is considered "Supreme Bandoneón of Buenos Aires".
